Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Annual Report of the Missouri State Board of Agriculture, With an Abstract of the Proceedings of the County Agricultural Societies, to the General Assembly of Missouri, for the Year 1865 Certain soils are much better adapted to the perfect development of certain crops than others. Highly stimulating manures may produce an excessive growth of stalk or foliage, sometimes at the expense of the vitality and vigor of the seed. Overgrown vegetables are per haps generally not the best for seed. The seed of very large squashes have been found to produce, year after year, smaller and smaller specimens. It is now generally admitted that medium sized potatoes are the best for seed. Some seeds are improved by age; to what extent this may be the case, is not determined. It is admitted that seeds of the cucumber, squash, pumpkin and melon are improved by age up to about six years. It is important to prevent the hybridization of these varieties, and when a crop has been produced under such circumstances as to prevent the liability of mixing, a supply of seed sufficient to last a half dozen years should be safely stored away. Tobacco seed which has been kept for a long time, has been thought to be very prolific, but rather defective in foliage. The same fact has been noticed in connection with some kinds of grain which had been laid aside and forgotten for a long time, and afterwards used for seed. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Annual Report of the Missouri State Board of Agriculture: With an Abstract of the Proceedings of the County Agricultural Societies, to the General Assembly of Missouri, for the Year 1866 The Texas cattle plague has excited an unusual degree of interest the past season throughout the whole country. The farmers of Missouri and surrounding states have lost heavily by it. It is an obscure disease, and it is hoped that the board of agriculture may hereafter have the means to thoroughly investigate it and determine, if possible, its nature, cause, origin, habitat, mode of propagation, etc. It is probable that there are localities in Texas and other southern regions not subject to the disease, and from which cattle might be brought into this State with safety. The magnitude of the losses by this disease makes it a matter well deserving of thorough investiga tion, and it would be well if each of the states most interested would appoint a competent commissioner to act unitedly in such investiga tion. Many interesting facts in regard to it have been obtained and embodied in this report. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Seventh Annual Report of the Missouri State Board of Agriculture: A Record of the Work for the Year 1904 Missouri's claim for being the first agricultural State of the Union has been demonstrated beyond question by the record of the winnings of the farmers made at the World's Louisiana Purchase Exposition. By international juries Missouri has been awarded, in competition with every state and nation of any consequence in the world, a greater aggre gate number of prizes on agriculture, horticulture, live stock and poultry products than any other state or nation. To Missouri was awarded 298 prizes in agriculture, 372 prizes in horticulture, 2 prizes in dairying, 790 prizes in live stock and 617 in poultry. To maintain. This high position will command the best efforts of our farmers and demand the greatest possible encouragement of the State. That the Board of Agriculture is a prominent factor in maintaining the high standard of Missouri as an agricultural and live stock common wealth is clearly shown by the fact that the publications of the Board are in greater demand than ever before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eighteenth Annual Report of the State Board of Agriculture of the State of Missouri for the Year 1886 The harvests are now, Nov. 10, completed, and the results well ascertained. The unfavorable fall growth of wheat in 1884 coupled with a winter of unusual severity, gave one of the most unfortunate wheat crops in the history of the State. The area sown had been di minished, by the force ot low prices, by 10 per cent. While the frost of winter further reduced this area, by ruined wheat necessarily plowed up, until the area harvested amounted to but acres, yielding but 65 and a fraction per cent. Of an average yield per acre, or bushels per acre, giving a total yield of but bushels. This yield is 566 bushels less than the average yield of the State. A new foreign competition has maintained a low level of price for this crop, and 80 cents will represent its full average sale value to farm ers. Hence, we have as low a price as is usually received. The farm ers of the State thus receive less for their crop of wheat than the usual average. This loss has been severely felt on the farm, and has by an inevitable law extended its influence to all industries.
