Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Second Annual Report of the Fire Department of the City of Boston: From February 1, 1894, to January 31, 1895 Work on the new fire-alarm plant is so far advanced as to indicate that that branch of the service will be transferred from the dome of City Hall to the new building in three or four months, thus removing from the former place a constant and formidable menace. A new steam fire-engine company, known as Engine Company 45, has been put in commission at Roslindale, and a new combination company at Ashmont. A new house for Ladder Company 1 is now ready for occupancy, and some alterations are going forward on the house of Engine Company 27. This enumeration covers about all the additions and improvements of the year. On the other hand, the house of Ladder Company 12 was destroyed in the fire of May 15, since which time the apparatus has remained in the street, and the men have been huddled in very confined quarters, - a reproachful public reminder of the way in which this department is sometimes handicapped by lack of means and authority to provide what convenience, comfort, and even decency require. Very comfortable quarters arc now provided, however, but on leased property, of which, after this year, the owners can demand the surrender by giving a months notice. A wise precaution demands, therefore, that a permanent building be provided for this company, either on the site of the old one, or else - which would be much more desirable - upon the site of the Walpole-street school-house, which was also destroyed in the same fire. As the city owns that property and has not yet assigned any definite use for it, the Commissioners would respectfully ask that it be turned over to this department as the site for a new house for Ladder Company 12. The other houses of the department, as a whole, are hardly in as good condition as a year ago, owing to the fact that the repairs which belong to the Public Buildings Department have been for the most part unattended to; not because of any wilful neglect on the part of the Superintendent, but because he was almost destitute of funds with which to perform the work.
