Book The Piper of Pax The Life Story of Sir Robert Baden Powell

Download or read book The Piper of Pax The Life Story of Sir Robert Baden Powell written by E. K. Wade and published by READ BOOKS. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Book Thirty One Years on the Plains and in the Mountains

Download or read book Thirty One Years on the Plains and in the Mountains written by William F. Drannan and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'Thirty One Years on the Plains and in the Mountains', William F. Drannan chronicles his firsthand experiences as a frontiersman in the American West during the mid-19th century. The book is written in a straightforward and unembellished style, reflecting the rugged and harsh conditions of frontier life. Drannan provides vivid descriptions of his encounters with Native American tribes, wildlife, and the challenges of survival in the untamed wilderness, offering a valuable glimpse into the realities of western expansion during this era. The narrative also highlights the resilience and resourcefulness required to thrive in such a demanding environment. Through his unvarnished storytelling, Drannan paints a compelling picture of the trials and triumphs of those who dared to venture into the unknown territories of the West. William F. Drannan's personal experiences as a frontiersman and scout lend authenticity and depth to 'Thirty One Years on the Plains and in the Mountains'. Drannan's intimate knowledge of the western landscape and its inhabitants infuses the narrative with a sense of immediacy and realism, capturing the spirit of adventure and danger that characterized this era of American history. His firsthand accounts offer valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of life on the frontier. Drannan's unique perspective as a participant in the events he describes adds credibility to the narrative, making it a captivating and informative read for those interested in the American West. I highly recommend 'Thirty One Years on the Plains and in the Mountains' to readers seeking an authentic and engaging portrayal of life on the American frontier. Drannan's narrative not only offers a compelling story of survival and exploration in the wild West but also sheds light on the complex interactions between settlers, Native American tribes, and the natural world. This book is a valuable contribution to the historical record of the American West and a must-read for enthusiasts of frontier literature.

Book Future Greats and Heartbreaks

Download or read book Future Greats and Heartbreaks written by Gare Joyce and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2010-06-04 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “One of this continent’s master craftsmen of sporting prose” (Sports Illustrated) and three-time National Magazine Award-winner Gare Joyce goes undercover to learn the secrets of NHL scouts. Veteran sports writer Gare Joyce realizes a long-held secret ambition as he spends a full season embedded as a hockey scout. Joyce’s year on the hockey beat is a steep learning curve for him; NHL scouts spend each season gathering information on players fighting it out to break into the world of professional hockey. They watch hundreds of games, speak to scores of players, parents, team-mates and other scouts, amassing profiles on all the top contenders. It’s a form of risk assessment–is this young hopeful deserving of a multi-million dollar contract?–and it can be a tough and thankless task. Scouts are ground into the game, picking up nuances of play that even the most committed fan would miss, but they are looking at more than just how well a kid can play. And come the final draft, only a tiny percentage of their full year’s work might matter. Examining the amount of information gathered on the under-eighteen hopefuls, the scrutiny to which they are subjected, and the differences between the rigour of American and Canadian junior teams, Joyce opens a window on the life and methods of an NHL scout and penetrates the mysterious world of scouting as no one has before.

Book Boy Scouts Handbook First Edition

Download or read book Boy Scouts Handbook First Edition written by Boy Scouts of America and published by anboco. This book was released on 2016-08-14 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Official Handbook for Boys was published in June 1911. In this edition, the American Scouting program was standardized, albeit with many omissions and mistakes (cf. external links). As with the Original Edition, many now-standard Scouting skills were passed over, including knife and axe use and map and compass work. The book describes many Scout-like virtues and qualifications. After a lengthy section on what a Scout should know, including chivalry, history, and national issues, it is noted that "in short, to be a good Scout is to be a well-developed, well-informed boy."
