Book excerpt: Twenty-one irreverent stories tracing the triumphs and follies of a clan of headstrong, wooden-shoed Dutch immigrants, from 1900 until the end of the century, as told by their deugenits (no-good) gay grandson. The narrator learns what his antecedents could never have witnessed: that blood will out, and Seceders will always return, just not in the same generation. And all, of course, is predestined. The second group of stories includes first-person vignettes of some well-known people like Gerald Ford, Eleanor Roosevelt, and LBJ as encountered during the 1960s. There is a freighter voyage to Tangiers in this section, and a treasure tale. The last group of stories present an Orinoco shaman who outwits an evangelist; a temp secretary who founds a NY art school on nothing more than a monkey wig and her own earnings; we meet a twelve year old boy whose death from an overdose of heroin inspired a social movement; and a 90 year old Quaker who taught youngsters to ignore the bad but answer the good in everyone. Some of tales were published previously. One won a national prize and another reveals facts that weren't printable in the original story, written by this book's author, which appeared in Time Magazine in 1969.

Book Twenty Odd Ducks

Download or read book Twenty Odd Ducks written by Lynne Truss and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2008-08-21 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language play iincludes many punctuation marks in this companion to the New York Times #1 bestseller Eats, Shoots & Leaves! Commas and apostrophes aren't the only punctuation marks that can cause big trouble if they're put in the wrong place. “Twenty-odd ducks” is an estimate of how many are waddling by, but “twenty odd ducks” would not only be a big group, but they’d look very strange! Imagine this without the middle period and the comma: “The king walked and talked. A half hour after, his head was cut off.” Oh no—a beheaded king that can still walk and talk! Truss and Timmons put hyphens, parentheses, quotation marks, periods, and more in the spotlight, with silly scenes showing how which marks you choose and where you put them can cause hilarious mix-ups.

Download or read book The Five and Twenty Tales of the Genie written by Sivadasa and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Half mythical, heroic and sagacious, the emperor Vikramaditya is widely regarded as India's greatest monarch. This collection of stories tells of the ruler's fabled encounter with a vetala, a genie who inhabits the body of a corpse. The emperor begs the spirit for his help against a mighty necromancer and is told in return twenty-four tales, each of which presents a situation he might face as a king and culminates in a riddle that he must solve. With each answer, Vikramaditya displays his deep wisdom, proving himself to be the ideal monarch and winning, in the twenty-fifth tale, the guidance he needs from the vetala to destroy his powerful enemy. Written down in medieval times but inspired by an oral tradition stretching back centuries, these wise and witty tales rank amongst the great masterpieces of Sanskrit literature.

Book The Posen Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization Volume 6

Download or read book The Posen Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization Volume 6 written by Elisheva Carlebach and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark project to collect, translate, and transmit primary material from a momentous period in Jewish culture and civilization, this volume covers what Elisheva Carlebach describes as a period "in which every aspect of Jewish life underwent the most profound changes to have occurred since antiquity." Organized by genre, this extensive yet accessible volume surveys Jewish cultural production and intellectual innovation during these dramatic years, particularly in literature, the visual and performing arts, and intellectual culture. The wide-ranging collection includes a diverse selection of sources created by Jews around the world, translated from a dozen languages. Representing a tumultuous time of changing borders, demographic shifts, and significant Jewish migration, this anthology explores the range of approaches of Jews, from welcoming to resistant, to the intertwining ideals of enlightenment and emancipation, "the very foundation of the Jewish experience in this period."
