Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prostitution, dope, gambling, and murder! As a town, St. Cecilia was anything but saintly—prostitution, dope, gambling, the works. Matt Rudd of the Vice Squad had the lurid inside story. But he was helpless as long as crooked politicos like Nick Bartkowiak and his right-hand goon, Little Artie Nowack, kept the Police Commissioner under their thumb. Then the strangling of one of Little Artie’s call girls raised a few eyebrows, especially Rudd’s. And when his questions brought him face-to-face with a gun, a five-gallon bucket and a sack of plaster of Paris, even the cowering Commissioner had to face facts—shoot to kill! All-out war on the underworld!

Book The Island of the Day Before

Download or read book The Island of the Day Before written by Umberto Eco and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2006-06-05 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 17th century Italian nobleman is marooned on an empty ship in this “astonishing intellectual journey" by the author of Foucault’s Pendulum (San Francisco Chronicle). In the year 1643, a violent storm in the South Pacific leaves Roberto della Griva shipwrecked—on a ship. Swept from the Amaryllis, he has managed to pull himself aboard the Daphne, anchored in the bay of a beautiful island. The ship is fully provisioned, he discovers, but the crew is missing. As Roberto explores the different cabinets in the hold, he looks back on various episodes from his life: Ferrante, his imaginary evil brother; the siege of Casale, that meaningless chess move in the Thirty Years' War in which he lost his father and his illusions; and the lessons given him on Reasons of State, fencing, the writing of love letters, and blasphemy. In this “intellectually stimulating and dramatically intriguing” novel, Umberto Eco conjures a young dreamer searching for love and meaning; and an old Jesuit who, with his clocks and maps, has plumbed the secrets of longitudes, the four moons of Jupiter, and the Flood (Chicago Tribune).

  • Publisher : Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht

Download or read book Renovatio written by Phil Anderas and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2019-06-17 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much mainstream Luther scholarship (and Lutheran theology) holds that Martin Luther downplayed, denied, derided, or just plain ignored "the holiness without which no one shall see the Lord" (Heb. 12:14). Phil Anderas advances a revisionist thesis: from the first inklings of his "Augustinian turn" c. 1514 to his death in 1546, Luther held and taught a robust theology of progressive renewal in holiness, carefully calibrated to the sober reality of residual sin and the astonishing gospel of grace in Jesus Christ. As it is set forth in the works that embody Luther's most considered judgments (c. 1535-46), this gospel-centered and irreducibly trinitarian dogmatics of real renewal in holiness is "Augustinian" and "evangelical" in equal parts. As such, it commands the regard of theologians who stand in the tradition of the Church's doctor gratiae. The argument proceeds in three steps: first, an exposition of the mature Luther's dogmatics of sin, grace, and holiness; second, an investigation of the roots of this dogmatics in the theology of the "420s Augustine," with whom a younger Luther was busily engaged c. 1514-16; third, an account of the continuities and discontinuities that characterize the development of Luther's theology from its embryonic state in the mid-1510s through the breakthroughs of the 1518-21 period to the settled position of the old Doctor.

Preferring to remain neutral, Moon turns down Bagnell’s offer and refuses Wade’s as well. But Wade does not want another gunman. He wants a sleuth—to investigate his own murder, should the coming war leave him dead. They are negotiating over a platter of chop suey when Louis Bagnell turns up murdered. Was Wade using Moon as an alibi, or did Bagnell’s killer come from within his own gang?
