Book excerpt: ‘Pure bias’. Succinct, to the point, this was Arthur Scargill’s characterisation of the two main evening television programmes’ coverage of the 1984 coal strike. Blunter still, the leader of the Nottinghamshire miners roared at the cameras, ‘It’s all being distorted. Take the bloody thing away’.Both Scargill and Chadburn were of course fighting their corner in the gravest industrial confrontation ever covered by television in Britain. This book is an analysis of the TV coverage of strikes and disputes in the 1970 and 80s. Useful for Media and Theatre Studies, Drama and students of politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, trusted core text on media’s impact on attitudes, behavior, elections, politics, and policymaking, Mass Media and American Politics is known for its readable introduction to the literature and theory of the field, and for staying current with each new edition on issues of new and social media, media ownership, the regulatory environment, infotainment, and war-time reporting. Written by the late Doris Graber--a scholar who has played an enormous role in establishing and shaping the field of mass media and American politics--and now lead by Johanna Dunaway, this book has set the standard for the course. New to this edition: Extensive coverage of political misinformation - the role changing communication technologies and mass media more generally are playing in its consumption and dissemination, as well as how the press is handling and should handle reporting on political misinformation, especially as it pertains to the presidency, elections, and crises like Covid-19. Updated coverage of the role social media and other popular digital platforms are playing (or not playing) in the effort to stop the spread of mis- and dis-information on their platforms, with special attention to both foreign and domestic efforts to use these platforms to incite violence, cause confusion about, and/or encourage distrust in, democratic institutions. Expanded treatment of rising affective, social, and ideological polarization in politics, with a special focus on whether and how mass media are contributing to these forms of polarization. New updates on causes and consequences of expanding news deserts, declining local news, and rampant growth of hedge-fund media ownership. Up to date coverage of what researchers are learning about the implications of growth in digital, social and mobile media use. What does it mean for attention to news and politics?

Book Matching Voters with Parties and Candidates

Download or read book Matching Voters with Parties and Candidates written by Diego Garzia and published by ECPR Press. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voting Advice Applications – VAAs – have become a widespread online feature of electoral campaigns in Europe, attracting growing interest from social and political scientists. But until now, there has been no systematic and reliable comparative assessment of these tools. Previously published research on VAAs has resulted almost exclusively in national case studies. This lack of an integrated framework for analysis has made research on VAAs unable to serve the scientific goal of systematic knowledge accumulation. Against this background, Matching Voters With Parties and Candidates aims first at a comprehensive overview of the VAA phenomenon in a truly comparative perspective. Featuring the biggest number of European experts on the topic ever assembled, the book answers a number of open questions and addresses debates in VAA research. It also aims to bridge the gap between VAA research and related fields of political science.

Book Acquiring Intercultural Communicative Competence from Textbooks

Download or read book Acquiring Intercultural Communicative Competence from Textbooks written by Lies Sercu and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates whether and to what extent foreign language textbooks can contribute to promoting adolescent pupils' acquisition of intercultural communicative competence. It gives a full scientific account of a research project carried out amongst Flemish learners of German. The focus of the research was on the relationships between the culture teaching approaches adopted in textbooks and the pupils' learning of culture. Although the sub-title refers to a particular group of pupils learning a particular language, the study has more general bearing and constitutes a substantial contribution to the literature, and in particular empirical research, on the development of intercultural competence in and through foreign language education. The composition of the volume reflects the affective, cognitive and contact dimensions of the culture learning process. It also gives space to the theoretical platform on which the research was built, and to the research methodology adopted. Chapter 1 sets out to contextualise and define the research topic. It clarifies the study's position within the field of culture-and-language learning-and-teaching theory, practice and research. It also situates the investigation into the specific context of teaching and learning foreign languages-and-cultures in Flanders. In chapter 2 the theoretical framework informing the study is developed. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the techniques of data collection and analysis employed, of the kinds of data collected, and of the chronology of data collection. Chapters 4, 5 and 6 provide an interpretative description and analysis of the investigation's key concepts. Chapters 4 and 5 focus on the pupils' culture learning processes and analyse relationships between attitude, contact and perception data. In chapter 6 the culture teaching approaches adopted in the investigated textbook series are described and evaluated with regard to their potential for promoting the pupils' learning of culture. Chapter 7, finally, provides a summary overview of the study's main findings and presents the main conclusions that can be drawn from the evidence presented in earlier chapters. It estimates the value of the study's research methodology and theoretical framework. It also reflects on how the research findings can find application and implementation.

Book Seeking Truth in International TV News

Download or read book Seeking Truth in International TV News written by Vivien Marsh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-17 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts CGTN (formerly CCTV-News) and the BBC’s international television news head-to-head, interrogating competing ‘truths’ in the exacting business of news reporting. Written by a media scholar and former long-serving BBC News journalist, Seeking Truth in International TV News asks if China’s English-language television news programmes are little more than state propaganda, and if the BBC can be viewed as a universal news standard to which all other broadcasters should aspire. Over 8 years of Xi Jinping’s rule, it investigates how the international TV news channels of CGTN and the BBC reported on Chinese politics, protests in Hong Kong, disasters, China in Africa, and insurgency and its suppression in Xinjiang. The comparison reveals uneven editorial imperatives at the Chinese broadcaster and raises questions about the BBC’s professed tenets of balance and impartiality. It also illustrates how Chinese journalists commit ‘small acts of journalism’ that push the boundaries of information control. A rigorous analysis of reportage from the two channels, this book will be relevant to scholars of global media, journalism, international relations and public diplomacy. It will also interest those in academia, the media and international affairs who want to examine the nature of news and ‘soft power’ in a comparative context.

Book DATA MINING Predicting Tipping Points

Download or read book DATA MINING Predicting Tipping Points written by Dr. Philip Gordon, PhD and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tipping Points as evidenced in global events are, in many ways, influenced by media. DATA MINING for predicting and analyzing world events. This just released, ground-breaking book: DATA MINING: PREDICTING TIPPING POINTS by Dr Philip Gordon, Ph.D, details three case studies which were selected on the basis of common Tipping Point Attributes: Each involved media contagiousness and stickiness during their development and, each arrived at a "dramatic moment in time," which could only be characterized by the phenomenon of Tipping Points. Three recent case studies explore the leading edge technologies of DATA MINING and the theory of TIPPING POINTS: The first case study, the 2008 Presidential Campaign of Barack Obama was chosen to examine a narrower scope and timeframe for the application of the analysis. In contrast to the second case study, the International Financial Crisis of 2007-2010, which involves a broader data study period to identify trends and more complex issues. The third study, Climate Change was included as consideration because the data mining research and analysis revealed critical relationships between Media Impact and Global Events. As the issue of Climate Change is still evolving, Dr Gordon provides a Data Mining and Tipping Point Theory methodology for analyzing and predicting our planets' most pressing Global Tipping Points. Review Comments: "The genius of the formulation of DATA MINING: PREDICTING TIPPING POINTS is that it takes explicit account of the role of social media and the internet at facilitating bifurcations and promoting dynamical instability. In effect, we have trimmed a few feet of tail off the kite. As a reader, I was informed and educated as to the factors which conspire to influence stability / instability in complex social systems. ...the book does a good job of making sense of past bifurcations and dynamical instabilities, namely political instability, our perception of global climate change, and international economic crises...my compliments on a truly insightful Media Tipping Points." -Prof. Dr. (med.) Peter S. Geissler, A.B., B.S., M.S., M.Phil., Ph.D. (Yale) M.A., M.Eng., M.S., Ph.D., M.S., M.D., M.Phil.(Cantab) "A truly fascinating book that (teaches) a whole new way of thinking about major events and how the media can influence them. - Being a political junkie I was heavily into the media coverage of the 2008 Obama election and the global financial meltdown both via TV and the blogosphere. I now find myself looking for the tipping points and stickiness factors as other key events unfold. Usually, I have trouble reading theoretical books but this one was an easy read and if you want supporting data then the references are there. This could become a solid reference for those in the media who truly want to understand what they are reporting. Highly recommended and I look forward to Dr. Gordon's ongoing analysis of (future) events." -Dr. Ralph Moorhouse, Ph.D. Political junkie, Expert: natural polymers for industries "The application of Data Mining and Tipping Point Theory to media and global events, particularly the financial crisis and climate change, is a fascinating one." -Dr. Serge Besanger, PhD Expert, International Monetary Fund ..".very interesting application (of the Tipping Point Theory)...potential opportunity for predicting other global events, i.e.: Egyptian crisis and perhaps, even terrorism activities." -Dr. Adam AJLANI, PhD Professor, Sciences Politic and Political Consultant, France TV1
