Book excerpt: Through veteran interviews, this illustrated history explores the contributions, experiences, and legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen from 1941–1946. What became known as the Tuskegee Experience began in 1931 with a letter from the head of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to the War Department asking that blacks be allowed to join the military. The efforts of early African American aviators, the struggle of organizations and individuals against the military's segregation policies, and the hard work of thousands of young men and women, military and civilian, black and white, all combined to make the Tuskegee Airmen an important but often overlooked part of America's military history. Through fascinating interviews with veterans and historical photographs, Black Knights tells the story of the men and women who served in the training program at Tuskegee Army Air Field from 1941 to 1946. The pilots' stories are here, but so are the experiences of the mechanics, band members, armorers, staff officers, nurses, and more who proved that they had courage and perseverance, not only in war, but in peacetime as well.

Book Tuskegee Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tuskegee Classic Reprint written by Max Bennett Thrasher and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tuskegee During the last five years I have made several visits to Alabama to study the methods and work of Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute for colored students, and to attend the annual sessions of the Tuskegee Negro Conference, an outgrowth of the Institute. I have visited many graduates and students of the school at work and in their homes, over a territory extending from West Virginia to Louisiana. In doing this work I have had opportunities to hear Mr. Booker T. Washington, the principal of the Institute, address many audiences of people of both races, North and South, and under widely varying conditions. As a result of my observations during this lime I have brought together here a more comprehensive account of the Institute, and of Mr. Washington's connection with it, than has been possible in any of several newspaper and magazine articles which I have written. To the publications in which these articles have appeared from time to time I wish to make grateful acknowledgment for any material from them which I may have included in this volume. I also wish to acknowledge my obligations to Mr. Wm. H. Baldwin, Jr., of New York, who has read the manuscript, and to whose advice and suggestions I am greatly indebted. Book excerpt: Virgil Richardson blazed his own unique trail through the twentieth century: a co-founder of Harlem's American Negro Theater, 1930s radio personality, World War II pilot, and expatriate for most of his life. In Flight, this remarkable man tells his story in his own vivid words. Educated in Texas, Richardson set out for New York City in 1938 to build a career on the stage. Just when he was on the brink of success as an actor, World War II broke out and he was drafted into the army. After overcoming numerous obstacles, Richardson became a Tuskegee cadet in 1943, and later saw action flying over the battlefields of Europe. Upon returning to the racially divided U.S., he decided to move to Mexico, where he encountered a society quite different from the one he had left behind. Compellingly told and historically fascinating, this is the story of a determined individual unwilling to accept the limited options of Jim Crow America.
