Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on Ghana, the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence from European colonial rule and the first in the world to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, this book explores how dominant children's rights principles interact with the lived realities of a range of children’s lives. The author considers the changeability and inconsistencies of childhoods within this context and the factors that underpin these varied intersections, including cultural norms, British colonial legacy, the influence of Christianity, urbanization, and social, economic and political transformations. Challenging one-dimensional portrayals of childhoods in the Global South, the author highlights the need for more holistic approaches to the study of children’s lives and children’s rights realization in Southern contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideologically divided and disorganized in 1960, the conservative wing of the Republican Party appeared to many to be virtually obsolete. However, over the course of that decade, the Right reinvented itself and gained control of the party. In Turning Right in the Sixties, Mary Brennan describes how conservative Americans from a variety of backgrounds, feeling disfranchised and ignored, joined forces to make their voices heard and by 1968 had gained enough power within the party to play the decisive role in determining the presidential nominee. Building on Barry Goldwater's short-lived bid for the presidential nomination in 1960, Republican conservatives forged new coalitions, began to organize at the grassroots level, and gained enough support to guarantee Goldwater the nomination in 1964. Brennan argues that Goldwater's loss to Lyndon Johnson in the general election has obscured the more significant fact that conservatives had wrested control of the Republican Party from the moderates who had dominated it for years. The lessons conservatives learned in that campaign, she says, aided them in 1968 and laid the groundwork for Ronald Reagan's presidential victory in 1980.

Book How to Turn Your Dreams into Reality

Download or read book How to Turn Your Dreams into Reality written by Carmina Harr and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wanted this book to be a primer for those in the course of awakening. I used a simple language; I chose many examples from daily life just to provide a better comprehension of the ideas I wanted to express. I did not want it to be a spiritual or philosophical book. I did not label it. It just is! Until recently, my mind did not understand the meaning of being an enlightened person. I thought this fancy word was used only by the people who think about themselves. They are spiritual, and all they do is to feed their ego with ideas according to which they know the ultimate truth. This word, enlightenment, is promoted by believers or spiritual people as something sacred, untouchable. But beyond this words labels, enlightenment means, in fact, simplicity, modesty, freedom, peace, and love. You do not have to think with your mind about this word. It is so simple that your mind hasnt got the slightest idea. Why? Because it is too simple. We do not have to waste time with what others say about spirituality or about the souls evolution. Its truth is its own truth. It is the version through which the soul got to this point of conscience. We do not have to see it as something great, as a master who must be sacredly worshiped and obeyed. The enlightened individuals never resort to information from the outside because they know all they want to know resides within. There is nothing from outside that they need. Carmina Harr

Book The Right to Development in the African Human Rights System

Download or read book The Right to Development in the African Human Rights System written by Serges Djoyou Kamga and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The right to development (RTD) seeks to address global inequities hidden in world politics and global institutions through the game of influences played by powerful actors. The negative impacts of the Atlantic slave trade, colonialism, and the subjugation of Africa through globalisation and its institutions are key factors that have caused Africa and African people claiming their RTD. This book examines how the African continent protects the right to development, examining the nature of the RTD and controversies surrounding it and how it is implemented. The book then goes onto explore the RTD at the regional level including through the jurisprudence of the African Commission and the African Court on Human Rights, at the sub-regional level including in sub-regional courts and tribunals, at the national levels through case studies and through the African Union governance institutions. Through this examination, the author unveils what are the prospects and challenges to the realisation of the RTD in Africa.

Book Conservatorship

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alex V. Barnard
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2023-09-26
  • ISBN : 0231558325
  • Pages : 552 pages

Download or read book Conservatorship written by Alex V. Barnard and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is involuntary psychiatric treatment the solution to the intertwined crises of untreated mental illness, homelessness, and addiction? In recent years, politicians and advocates have sought to expand the use of conservatorships, a legal tool used to force someone deemed “gravely disabled,” or unable to meet their needs for food, clothing, or shelter as a result of mental illness, to take medication and be placed in a locked facility. At the same time, civil liberties and disability rights groups have seized on cases like that of Britney Spears to argue that conservatorships are inherently abusive. Conservatorship is an incisive and compelling portrait of the functioning—and failings—of California’s conservatorship system. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with professionals, policy makers, families, and conservatees, Alex V. Barnard takes readers to the streets where police encounter homeless people in crisis, the locked wards where people receiving treatment are confined, and the courtrooms where judges decide on conservatorship petitions. As he shows, California’s state government has abdicated authority over this system, leaving the question of who receives compassionate care and who faces coercion dependent on the financial incentives of for-profit facilities, the constraints of underresourced clinicians, and the desperate struggles of families to obtain treatment for their loved ones. This book offers a timely warning: reforms to expand conservatorship will lead to more coercion but little transformative care until government assumes accountability for ensuring the health and dignity of its most vulnerable citizens.

Book Survivor Lessons

Download or read book Survivor Lessons written by Matthew J. Smith and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of scholarly essays examines reality television. The first show, Survivor, inspired a national craze when it aired in the summer of 2000. Ever since, successors and copycats have been on each of the four largest networks. The basics stay the same: put a group of people into situations bound to cause conflict, and watch them squirm. Rather than criticize the series' voyeuristic appeal, this work evaluates what goes on within the text of such shows and how they reflect or affect our larger culture. Contributors include researchers from communications, sociology, political science, and psychology. The contributions cover such topics as reality television's relationships with cultural identity, publicity rights, historical perspectives, trust, decision-making strategies, political rationality, office politics, and primitivism. Each chapter includes a bibliography. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Book Transforming the Development Landscape

Download or read book Transforming the Development Landscape written by Lael Brainard and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007-03-01 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private sector activity is crucial for development. It shapes the investment climate, mobilizes innovation and financing in areas such as global health, and can either cause or mitigate social and environmental harm. Yet so far, the international development debate has not focused on the role of the private sector. This volume—written by members of the private sector, philanthropic organizations, and academia—investigates ways to galvanize the private sector in the fight against global poverty. Using a bottom-up approach, they describe how the private sector affects growth and poverty alleviation. They also review the impediments to private capital investment, and discuss various approaches to risk mitigation, including public sector enhancements, and identify some specific new plans for financing development in neglected markets, including an equity-based model for financing small-to-medium-sized enterprises. From the top-down, the authors look at the social and environmental impact of private sector activities, investigate public-private partnerships, explore new perspectives on the role of multinationals, and discuss an in-depth case study of these issues as they relate to global public health. In addition to providing a broad overview of the current issues, this forward-looking volume assesses the action-oriented initiatives that already exist, and provides templates and suggestions for new initiatives and partnerships. Contributors include David DeFerranti (Brookings Institution), Timothy Freundlich (Calvert Social Investment Foundation), Ross Levine (World Bank), Sylvia Mathews (Gates Foundation), Jane Nelson (Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government), Alan Patricof (APAX Partners), Warrick Smith (World Bank), and Julie Sunderland (APAX Partners).

Book The Evolution of International Human Rights

Download or read book The Evolution of International Human Rights written by Paul Gordon Lauren and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This widely acclaimed and highly regarded book, used extensively by students, scholars, policymakers, and activists, now appears in a new third edition. Focusing on the theme of visions seen by those who dreamed of what might be, Lauren explores the dramatic transformation of a world patterned by centuries of human rights abuses into a global community that now boldly proclaims that the way governments treat their own people is a matter of international concern—and sets the goal of human rights "for all peoples and all nations." He reveals the truly universal nature of this movement, places contemporary events within their broader historical contexts, and explains the relationship between individual cases and larger issues of human rights with insight. This new edition incorporates material from recently declassified documents and the most recent scholarship relating to the creation of the new Human Rights Council and its Universal Periodic Review, the International Criminal Court, the Responsibility to Protect (R2P), terrorism and torture, the impact of globalization and modern technology, and activists in NGOs devoted to human rights. It provides perceptive assessments of the process of change, the power of visions and visionaries, politics and political will, and the evolving meanings of sovereignty, security, and human rights themselves.
