Book excerpt: In this study, it is aimed to present whether or not Turkish high school students' attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help is effected by gender, whether or not having any prior psychological experience, perceived parental attitude and parents' education level. Research group is composed of total of 301 students, educated at high schools in Burdur. The data have been obtained by SAPPH (Attitude Scale towards Professional Psychological Help) developed by researchers. According to research results, girls those who previously obtained professional psychological help and with democratically perceived parental attitudes have more positive attitudes towards professional psychological help. No difference has been observed between attitudes toward professional psychological help based on parents' education level. (Contains 5 tables.) Book excerpt: Sometimes individuals may find it difficult to cope with their problems and need professional help. However the rate of seeking psychological help from a mental health professional is low (Turkey Mental Health Profile Report, 1998; Vogel, Wade and Hackler, 2007). The fact that individuals do not seek psychological help for their serious problems which can lead to more seriousness of the individual's problem and may increase the burden of illness. Turkey National Burden of Disease Study (2004) shows that mental disorder is ranked second disease burden. Besides, the attitudes of the individual are affected by the environment therefore cultural framework is important to understand attitudes towards pyschological help seeking. It is considered that understanding the variables affecting the attitudes of the individual to receive help is important for interventions that increase the attitudes of individuals to seek psychological help. It was aimed to examine the attitudes toward pyschological help seeking among Turkish people. For this reason in addition to attitudes toward psychological help seeking variable related psychological variables, cultural values, social stigma, self-stigma, self-concealment, psychological distress and demographic variables were included in the study. The second purpose of this study is to comparing attitudes of the two Turkish samples, psychology students and general sample, regarding the attitudes towards psychological help seeking. Demographic Information Form, The Scale of Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychological Help-Shortened, Social Stigma Scale for Receiving Psychological Help, Multi-Dimensional Social Values Scale (family value, religion value, traditional value), Self-Stigma of Seeking Psychological Help Scale, Self-Concealment Scale and Brief Symptom Inventory were used as the data collection instrument in the study. T-Test, analysis of variance and regression analyses will be used for the analysis of the data. The results will be discussed within the scope of literature.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examined the attitudes of Turkish adults towards seeking individual and marital psychotherapeutic services and the factors influencing these attitudes such as age, gender, previous experience of psychotherapy, socioeconomic status, and religiosity. A sample of 106 Turkish adults was recruited from areas within and around three Turkish cities. They filled out a number of questionnaires including the Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help (ATSPPH), Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Help-Marital Therapy Questionnaire (ASPPH-MT), the Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire (SCSORF), the Kuppuswamy Socioeconomic Status Scale, and a demographic questionnaire designed by the researcher. Correlational and regression analyses indicated that gender and income were significant predictors of attitudes toward seeking individual psychotherapeutic services; and gender, religiosity and previous experience of psychotherapy were significant predictors of attitudes towards seeking marital therapeutic services. This information will help to inform efforts to reduce barriers to mental health care in Turkey.

Book excerpt: In advocating an action-oriented and issues-based curriculum, this book takes the position that a major, but shamefully neglected, goal of science and technology education is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to confront the complex and often ill-defined socioscientific issues they encounter in daily life as citizens in an increasingly technology-dominated world carefully, critically, confidently and responsibly. In outlining proposals for addressing socioscientific issues through a curriculum organized in terms of four increasingly sophisticated levels of consideration, the author adopts a highly critical and politicized stance towards the norms and values that underpin both scientific and technological development and contemporary scientific, engineering and medical practice, criticizes mainstream STS and STSE education for adopting a superficial, politically naïve and, hence, educationally ineffective approach to consideration of socioscientific issues, takes the view that environmental problems are social problems occasioned by the values that underpin the ways in which we choose to live, and urges teachers to encourage students to reach their own views through debate and argument about where they stand on major socioscientific issues, including the moral-ethical issues they often raise. More controversially, the author argues that if students are to become responsible and politically active citizens, the curriculum needs to provide opportunities for them to experience and learn from sociopolitical action. The relative merits of direct and indirect action are addressed, notions of learning about action, learning through action and learning from action are developed, and a case is made for compiling a user-friendly database reflecting on both successful and less successful action-oriented curriculum initiatives. Finally, the book considers some of the important teacher education issues raised by this radically new approach to teaching and learning science and technology. The book is intended primarily for teachers and student teachers of science, technology and environmental education, graduate students and researchers in education, teacher educators, curriculum developers and those responsible for educational policy. The author is Emeritus Professor of Science Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (University of Toronto), Adjunct Professor of Science Education at the University of Auckland and Visiting Professor of Science Education at the University of Hong Kong. His research interests include considerations in the history, philosophy and sociology of science and their implications for science and technology education, STSE education and the politicization of both students and teachers, science curriculum history, multicultural and antiracist education, and teacher education via action research.
