Book Turkish Art of Illumination

Download or read book Turkish Art of Illumination written by Mine Esiner Ozen and published by Gozen Yayin. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before printing, books were written with reed pens using black ink and Arabic letters on papers that were polished with ahar (Mixture made with cornstarch and egg white for polishing the paper) and mühre (a device made of glass, used to make paper smooth and shiny). Important ones were written in “beautiful writing” (Hüsn-i Hat) and embellished with illuminations, marblings, engravings and miniatures. The books prepared in such artistic ways were generally given to Padishahs, lady sultans, and notable people of the time and were dedicated to libraries founded by those who are interested in books. Manuscript libraries that contain the old waqf libraries are today centres of illumination examples. However, it is not that easy for people who would like to see the examples of specific time or illuminator since a catalogue system has not been made yet. It is often not allowed to get pictures from manuscripts (because it will give damage to the books). Therefore, students are not able to see as many examples as they like or they need. Illumination is the name given to the embellishments, which are made with paints and gold, of manuscript books. Consequently, the art of illumination started to disappear as printing came into our country. School of Calligraphers (Medresetü’l-Hattatîn) which was set up in 1914 put the arts of manuscript books into action again. The aim of this book is to constitute a collection of precious examples chosen from unique manuscripts for the learners of illumination. All photos in the book were taken at Suleymaniye Library. In order to reach this goal, the text is meant to be short and examples are chosen from the works most of which have copying dates listed and they are chosen especially from the Seljuk, Beylik and Ottoman periods. Collection name of the book from which the example is taken and its recording number, name of the book and writer if any, outer measure, copying date, page number, name of its illuminator or miniature house if known and appropriate short information about it are written under the pictures. We hope this album of Turkish Illumination Art in which we tried to give as many examples as possible, will be beneficial especially for students. The book also offers techniques and space for practising.

Book Architecture and the Turkish City

Download or read book Architecture and the Turkish City written by Murat Gül and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture and urban planning have always been used by political regimes to stamp their ideologies upon cities, and this is especially the case in the modern Turkish Republic. By exploring Istanbul's modern architectural and urban history, Murat Gul highlights the dynamics of political and social change in Turkey from the late-Ottoman period until today. Looking beyond pure architectural styles or the physical manifestations of Istanbul's cultural landscape, he offers critical insight into how Turkish attempts to modernise have affected both the city and its population. Charting the diverse forces evident in Istanbul's urban fabric, the book examines late Ottoman reforms, the Turkish Republic's turn westward for inspiration, Cold War alliances and the AK Party's reaffirmation of cultural ties with the Middle East and the Balkans. Telltale signs of these moments - revivalist architecture drawing on Ottoman and Seljuk styles, 1930s Art Deco, post-war International Style buildings and the proliferation of shopping malls, luxurious gated residences and high-rise towers, for example - are analysed and illustrated in extensive detail.Connecting this rich history to present-day Istanbul, whose urban development is characterised anew by intense social stratification, the book will appeal to researchers of Turkey, its architecture and urban planning.

Book Architectural Documentation Built Environment Modernization and Turkish Nationalism

Download or read book Architectural Documentation Built Environment Modernization and Turkish Nationalism written by Serra Akboy-Ilk and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of building a new country, this study explores and evaluates the documentation culture in early republican Turkey. Having fought the Turkish War of Independence (1919–22) against the Allied Powers, the revolutionaries led by legendary leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938) came to engage with the idea of the West and its cultural origin. With the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, the constitution abolished the 600-year-old Ottoman Empire including the dynastic cultural, economic, educational, and governmental institutions. In the redemption of the nation within the modern history of civilizations, cultural Westernization and technical modernization became the model for the newly found nation-state. While the new country became the subject of reformation, historic architecture was called upon to grant the aura of a glorious past to the Turks. Through the materialization of ‘Türk Tarih Tezi’ (the Turkish History Thesis), the founding leaders focused on the origin of Turks and the everlasting spirit of the Turkish state. In this pursuit, architectural heritage signified the formative power to represent the past. Supported by state-agencies, scholars, with supreme patriotic zeal and diligence, travelled across the remotest corners of the country to document and study the historic architecture of the nation. To date, the complicated question of a national identity embodied in the built environment has dominated the contemporary scholarship on early republican historiography. Akboy-İlk’s study, however, distinguishes itself with its focus on architectural documentation, which became an agent of history-writing in the early years of the nation state. Curated by the ideologies of the state, the formal documentation findings extensively informed the republican plot of the modern progress of Turks. For scholars interested in a closer reading of the crossing boundaries between architectural heritage and nation-building in the case of the modernization of Turkey, this book is revealing and provocative in bringing forward architectural documentation, a remarkably overlooked subject in studies of the area.

The 1,500 exhibitions and displays recorded include those held in the main Museum and at its branches, the Bethnal Green Museum (now the National Museum of Childhood) and the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden, and additionally those it has organized at external venues, in Great Britain and abroad.
