Book Military Innovation in T rkiye

Download or read book Military Innovation in T rkiye written by Barış Ateş and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Turkish military innovation since the Cold War. The major questions addressed are how Türkiye has been able to innovate, the production of new weapon systems, its philosophical background, how the country overcame bureaucratic and economic obstacles, and how these innovations resonated in military doctrine and organization. Focusing on two main defense industry projects that trigger an overall change in the military doctrine and organization, the text examines the innovative inclinations of the Turkish military realm and reveals the societal, economic and political consequences of military innovation. This book fills a gap in the literature by providing an interdisciplinary and comprehensive overview of Turkish military innovation. Contributors include those involved in and affected by the military innovation process, as well as scholars who monitor the process using primary sources. Military Innovation in Türkiye will appeal to academics, politicians and military professionals interested in understanding the evolution of the Turkish military.

Book The Turkish Deep State

Download or read book The Turkish Deep State written by Mehtap Sooyler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deep state ranks among the most critical issues in Turkish politics. This book traces its origins and offers an explanation of the emergence and trajectory of the deep state; the meaning and function of informal and authoritarian institutions in the formal security sector of a democratic regime; the involvement of the state in organized crime; armed conflict; corruption; and massive human rights violations. This book applies an innovative methodological approach to concept formation and offers a mid-range theory of deep state that sheds light on the reciprocal relationship between the state and political regimes and elaborates on the conditions for the consolidation of democracy. It traces the path-dependent emergence and trajectory of the deep state from the Ottoman Empire to the current Turkish Republic and its impact on state-society relations. It reads state formation, consolidation, and breakdown from the perspective of this most resilient phenomenon of Turkish politics. The analysis also situates recent developments regarding AKP governments, including the EU accession process, civil-military relations, coup trials, the Kurdish question, and the Gülen Movement in their context within the deep state. Moreover, this case-study offers an analytical framework for cross-regional comparative analysis of the deep states. Addressing the lacuna in academic scholarship on the deep state phenomenon in Turkey, this book is essential reading for students and scholars with an interest in democratization, politics and Middle East Studies.

Book Constructing Regional Security

Download or read book Constructing Regional Security written by W. Durch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book William Durch examines conventional weapons proliferation since World War II, the role of arms transfers in fueling regional conflict, and prospects for curbing the global arms trade. Noting that supply side arms control efforts, which seek to constrain the companies and countries that produce and distribute major conventional weapons, have a poor international track record, Durch argues for a broader approach that tries to get at the demand side of the equation. Addressing the political and regional dynamics that impel arms acquisitions, he looks at how arms control might be combined with confidence and security-building measures to contain demand, and how value-based arms trade control measures like 'codes of conduct' could be implemented in stepwise fashion consistent with US national interests in regional stability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IPBA BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AWARDS SILVER MEDALIST A BOOKLIST AND KIRKUS BEST BOOK OF 2019 "Well-researched, cogently argued... avoids clichés and deeply examines the complex relationship between Islam and the West.” —Booklist, starred review White supremacist racism has many faces. A foreign policy that focuses on "American interests" and exploits foreign resources is one of those faces. Nowhere has this become more evident than in the Middle East. Decades of covert intervention by the CIA in the Middle East came home to roost when Al Qaeda operatives hijacked American airliners and flew them into the World Trade Center towers on 9/11, horrifically killing 3000. With Americans still in shock, George W. Bush asked, “Why do they hate us?” His bizarre answer, "They hate our freedoms," squandered an opportunity for national introspection. Instead, he unleashed the power of a $330 billion "defense" budget on the villages of Afghanistan and subsequently on Baghdad. In the years after 9/11, Islamophobia became a mainstay in American society and in American political rhetoric. It was the unfettered hate speech toward Muslims that opened the door for closeted racists to come out into the open with hate speech toward all nonwhite groups. In Why Do They Hate Us?, author Steve Slocum brings to light Islam's origins as a social justice movement and paints a beautiful portrait of Islam's peaceful mainstream. Why Do They Hate Us? is sprinkled with stories from the lives of everyday Muslims and anecdotes from Slocum’s five years living in Kazakhstan, allowing the reader to catch a glimpse of the true soul of Islam. You'll never look at Muslims in the same way again. “In an era of rampant Islamophobia, Slocum's book is essential reading.” —Todd H. Green, author of The Fear of Islam: An Introduction to Islamophobia in the West "Effectively countering pernicious, misinformed narratives, this is an essential contribution to interfaith studies." —Publishers Weekly

Book The Economics of the Global Defence Industry

Download or read book The Economics of the Global Defence Industry written by Keith Hartley and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes an original contribution to our knowledge of the world’s major defence industries. Experts from a wide range of different countries – from the major economies of North America and Western Europe to developing economies and some unique cases such as China, India, Singapore, South Africa and North Korea – describe and analyse the structure, conduct and performance of the defence industry in that country. Each chapter opens with statistics on a key nation’s defence spending, its spending on defence R&D and on procurement over the period 1980 to 2017, allowing for an analysis of industry changes following the end of the Cold War. After the facts of each industry, the authors describe and analyse the structure, conduct and performance of the industry. The analysis of ‘structure’ includes discussions of entry conditions, domestic monopoly/oligopoly structures and opportunities for competition. The section on ‘conduct’ analyses price/non-price competition, including private and state funded R&D, and ‘performance’ incorporates profitability, imports and exports together with spin-offs and technical progress. The conclusion explores the future prospects for each nation’s defence industry. Do defence industries have a future? What might the future defence firm and industry look like in 50 years’ time? This volume is a vital resource and reference for anyone interested in defence economics, industrial economics, international relations, strategic studies and public procurement.

Book The Business Year Turkey 2020

Download or read book The Business Year Turkey 2020 written by and published by The Business Year. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has changed in the Turkish economy since The Business Year's last publication on the country in 2016. Then, the economy was experiencing a sustained period of high growth at a time when much of the rest of the world was still struggling to recover from the global recession. On our 2019 return to Turkey to produce this publication, the country was in the grip of a sharp drop in its currency's value and the onset of economic recession. Beleaguered by high interest rates and a decline in domestic consumer demand, companies canceled planned investments and corporate loans began souring. Despite this, the year ended optimistically, with the economy beating growth estimates, inflation reined in, and lower global and domestic interest rates providing a needed boost in investment activity. The Business Year's country-specific publications, sometimes featuring over 150 face-to-face interviews, are among the most comprehensive annual economic publications available internationally.

Book Toward a Quantum Safe Communication Infrastructure

Download or read book Toward a Quantum Safe Communication Infrastructure written by R. Steinwandt and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accelerating pace at which quantum computing is developing makes it almost inevitable that some of the major cryptographic algorithms and protocols we rely on daily, for everything from internet shopping to running our critical infrastructure, may be compromised in the coming years. This book presents 11 papers from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on Quantum and Post-Quantum Cryptography, hosted in Malta in November 2021. The workshop set out to understand and reconcile two seemingly divergent points of view on post-quantum cryptography and secure communication: would it be better to deploy post-quantum cryptographic (PQC) algorithms or quantum key distribution (QKD)? The workshop brought these two communities together to work towards a future in which the two technologies are seen as complementary solutions to secure communication systems at both a hardware (QKD) and software (PQC) level, rather than being in competition with each other. Subjects include the education of an adequate workforce and the challenges of adjusting university curricula for the quantum age; whether PQC and QKD are both required to enable a quantum-safe future and the case for hybrid approaches; and technical aspects of implementing quantum-secure communication systems. The efforts of two NATO nations to address the possible emergence of cryptanalytically-relevant quantum computers are explored, as are two cryptographic applications which go beyond the basic goal of securing two-party communication in a post-quantum world. The book includes economic and broader societal perspectives as well as the strictly technical, and adds a helpful, new contribution to this conversation.
