Book Tunnel Rats vs the Taliban

Download or read book Tunnel Rats vs the Taliban written by Jimmy Thomson and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They were young, they were tough and they were everywhere. They were both the backyard builders and the frontline troops in Australia's war against the Taliban. This is the powerful story of the sappers, the Army engineers in Afghanistan whose raw courage and skills were inspired by the original Australian Tunnel Rats of the war in Vietnam. These Tunnel Rats of Afghanistan have rooted out the enemy from deep inside their caves and mountain hideouts, have defused thousands of improvised explosive devices (the booby traps and landmines of this most recent of wars), built bridges and schools to win a war of hearts and minds, and fought side by side with special forces commandos and SAS troops. They, too, lost a disproportionate number of their comrades and many returned home with the devastating baggage of war, post-traumatic stress disorder. Inspiring and action packed, this is the story of a special breed of soldier operating in a modern war against an enemy with medieval morals . . . and bombs triggered by mobile phones. It is a story that connects the unsung heroes of Vietnam with the modern heroes of Afghanistan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1965, soon after the first US combat troops had arrived in Vietnam, it was realized that in some areas the Viet Cong had developed vast tunnel complexes in which to hide from the enemy. It was long known that such complexes existed, but it was not realized just how extensive they were in some areas, how important they were to the Viet Cong, and how difficult it was to detect and neutralize them. At first infantrymen volunteered to enter the tunnels armed with only pistols and flashlights – the 'tunnel runners' were born, known to the Australians as 'tunnel ferrets'. Starting as an ad hoc force of infantrymen, combat engineers and chemical troops, it was not long before units were 'formalized' as 'tunnel exploration personnel' and 4–6-man 'tunnel exploitation and denial teams' were created. They came to be known simply as 'tunnel rats' with the unofficial motto Non Gratum Anus Rodentum – 'Not Worth a Rat's Ass'. This title will be based on the personal accounts of those who served in this unique role and will describe the specialist training and equipment, not to mention the tactics and combat experiences, of those who fought an underground war against the Viet Cong in Vietnam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those of you who fought in Nam... did you ever have a buddy disappear in a firefight but his body was never found? Did you ever think you had the enemy cornered when they suddenly disappeared? Did you ever sweep a village clean, and then have the VC suddenly appear where they weren't before? Most of you know what I'm talking about. But most of you might not know that these disappearances - including your buddy's body - were just the enemy trying to mess with your head. This paperback book combines the research and case histories of some of our bravest of the brave Tunnel Rats. The author digs into the details of how they survived fighting through a system of underground passageways some of which were three levels deep and stretched up to 100 miles in length! A vast network of tunnels that was virtually under your feet! Not many of you would believe that back at your base of security eight feet down under your hooch the enemy could be resting in his coffin-sized hole reading in the flickering light of a bottle lamp. But those bases that were over-run in the middle of the night by their suicide squads might wonder how the hell all of those crazies got through their perimeter defenses without triggering a firefight. Readers have asked for more tunnel stories and this book brings them all together. Enjoy them but when the lead gets to flying in those blacked out tunnels, wear your flak jacket and keep a low profile. Fear not, usually good guys always win...what's so freaking amazing is how they did it!

They were the legendary Aussie sappers, the army engineers, who were literally everywhere in the fighting against the Vietcong. This special breed of soldier lived hard and played hard. They were there at the beginning of the war. They were also among the last to leave. And along the way, they fought with their mates in infantry and tanks to bear the brunt of the Vietcong's revenge. Book The Browning High Power Pistol

Download or read book The Browning High Power Pistol written by Leroy Thompson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making its debut in 1935, the Browning High-Power was the world's most widely used military pistol for much of the 20th century. Military and law-enforcement agencies in more than 90 countries have issued the High-Power and it has seen combat in conflicts from World War II through to the 'War on Terror'. After conquering Belgium, Nazi Germany produced more than 300,000 High-Powers for use by the Waffen-SS, Fallschirmjäger and others, and after 1945 the High-Power became standard for most NATO-armed forces as well as scores of others. Chambered for the 9×19mm Luger cartridge, John Browning's High-Power improved on the classic Colt M1911 design, especially in its use of a far simpler takedown system. The pistol's innovative 13-round magazine, designed by Dieudonné Saive, staggered the cartridges for higher capacity without unduly increasing the grip size. During its 82-year production run at Fabrique Nationale (FN) in Belgium, the design evolved slightly, but a 2017 High-Power was still easily recognizable as a descendant of the original model. Packed with gripping material including detailed technical specifications, contemporary photographs and highly accurate artist's renditions, this title is a comprehensive and informative guide to the world's most iconic semi-automatic pistol.

  • Author : Nick Allen
  • Publisher : The History Press

  • Pages : 680 pages

Download or read book Embed written by Nick Allen and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, journalist Nick Allen quit a secure job in Pakistan as a news agency writer to experience the life of foreign troops fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan. Over several years he journeyed as an embedded reporter with a dozen armies, working his way through placid backwaters to remote, savage hotspots where daily clashes with insurgent forces were the norm. Driven by a desire to himself live and then convey some of the drama, tragedy, farce and sheer frustration experienced by soldiers and marines from California to Copenhagen, Allen returned again and again for 'embeds' with different contingents to explore a multinational effort that will surely define NATO's future and events in South Asia, and the world, for many years to come. No other writer managed to gain such broad access to the forty-two-country Coalition that was deployed in Afghanistan, or produce an account that carries so much of the essence of soldiering in this inhospitable environment, where extremes of climate, treachery and enemy cunning have always defeated nations that dared to wage war in the 'graveyard of empires.' Embed explores the fragile calm of Bamiyan and its ancient sites and other low-intensity regions – usually ignored but a vital part of the overall picture – together with the ferocious clashes of Helmand, Kandahar, Kunar and other provinces. The author found that even the most sophisticated armed forces had been sucked into a fight they were ill-prepared for and, amid political uncertainty and dwindling public support back home, ultimately could not win.
