Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) was estab lished in 1978 to stimulate and support scientific research and educational programs related to nutrition, toxicology, and food safety, and to encourage cooperation in these programs among scientists in universities, industry, and government agencies to assist in the resolution of health and safety issues. To supplement and enhance these efforts, ILSI has made a major commitment to supporting programs to harmon ize toxicologic testing, to advance a more uniform inter pretation of bioassay results worldwide, to promote a common understanding of lesion classifications, and to encourage wide discussion of these topics among scien tists. The Monographs on the Pathology of Laboratory Ani mals are designed to facilitate communication among those involved in the safety testing of foods, drugs, and chemicals. The complete set will cover all organ systems and is intended for use by pathologists, toxicologists, and others concerned with evaluating toxicity and carcinogen icity studies. The international nature of the project - as reflected in the composition of the editorial board and the diversity of the authors and editors - strengthens our ex pectations that understanding and cooperation will be im proved worldwide through the series. Alex Malaspina President International Life Sciences Institute Preface This book, on the integumentary system, is the seventh volume of a set prepared under the sponsorship of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI).

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: approaches to the experimental problems that still face us in understanding this most fascinating of organs. Too many people contributed to the completion of this volume to allow acknowledg ment of all the individual efforts, but we particularly thank the reviewers whose input into the editorial process was invaluable and the authors of these chapters who revised their text, sometimes more than once, to bring it to the high standards set by the Editors. The Com mittee gratefully acknowledges the support ofVysis, Inc. , in the publication of a color figure in Chapter 19, by S. Weber-Hall and Trevor Dale. Finally, we wish to express our heartfelt appreciation to Margot Ip and Bonnie Asch, who worked long and hard to bring this volume to fruition. Margaret C. Neville for the Committee on Mammary Gland Biology Preface One of the most exciting and beneficial developments in research on mammary gland biology and breast cancer has been the influx of increased funding to support this work. This influx, which has been due primarily to the tireless efforts of breast cancer activists to gamer addi tional money from various federal and state sources, has led to a rapid expansion of research efforts by attracting numerous new investigators into the field. These new investigators include students, postdoctoral fellows, and scientists from other fields.

Book Hormonal Regulation of Mammary Tumors

Download or read book Hormonal Regulation of Mammary Tumors written by Benjamin S. Leung and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept that hormones influence tumor growth originated in 1889 with the proposal of Albert Schinzinger who suggested that breast cancer is related to the ovaries. Several years later, Sir George Beatson observed that remission of disseminated breast cancer could be achieved in premenopausal patients by performing bilateral oophorectomy. As a result of the contri butions of Hedley Atkins, Charles Huggins and others, additive and ablative hormonal therapies have been widely used for the treatment of advanced breast cancers for several decades. Model systems to study the effects of hormones on growth and regression of breast tumors have been available for many years; however, the complexities of the hormonal environment have rendered in vivo studies difficult in man and experimental animals. Recently, the availability of long-term cultures of breast cancer cells has stimulated many investigators to use these cell lines to unravel the mechanisms of hormone action. Because of the extreme diversity and complexity of advances regarding the endocrinology of the breast and breast cancers, a multi-authored review was deemed necessary. It has been gratifying to receive contributions from many noted scholars. In Volume I of this monograph, the influence of steroid hormones and their antagonists upon normal and neoplastic tissues of the mammary gland are presented. In Volume II, the effects of peptide and other hormones are reviewed.

Book Mammary Tumor Cell Cycle Differentiation and Metastasis

Download or read book Mammary Tumor Cell Cycle Differentiation and Metastasis written by Robert B. Dickson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammary Tumor Cell Cycle, Differentiation and Metastasis is the fifth volume since 1988 in a series designed to broadly examine current advances in the cellular and molecular biology of breast cancer. As in previous volumes, the editors have invited recognized experts in cutting-edge topics to provide a chapter focused on their area of research. The editors have turned to the researchers who study rodent models of the disease and to those who study the cellular and molecular basis of human breast cancer. The first section of the book is devoted to new mouse models of mammary development and tumorigenesis. The second section moves to studies of human breast cancer and focuses on receptors, signalling, and the cell cycle. The final section deals with defective tissue interactions in human breast cancer. We are now in a period of extremely rapid accumulation of data on the molecular and cellular biology of breast cancer. These findings are highlighted in chapters from Mammary Tumor Cell Cycle, Differentiation and Metastasis: Advances in Cellular and Molecular Biology of Breast Cancer.

Book Cellular and Molecular Biology of Mammary Cancer

Download or read book Cellular and Molecular Biology of Mammary Cancer written by E. Anderson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for this book arose during the 1985 Gordon Conference on "Mammary Gland Biology". New developments in the methodology of cell biology and the explosive growth of molecular biology had begun to impact upon our understanding of mammary gland growth and function. It seemed a propitious time for summarizing the current status of knowledge of the cell and molecular biology of mammary cancer and for attempting to outline future areas of concern and interest. The reviews presented here were completed by the Fall of 1986. Although new insights will surely continue to emerge, it is hoped that the material in this volume will form not only a current update but a basic core of information for future experiments. We have not attempted to cover all areas of mammary gland transformation. Those areas where recent detailed reviews are already available have been omitted. Also, the areas of normal gland development, cell ultrastructure, hormone responsiveness, chemotherapy and clinical aspects of mammary cancer have not been included. Instead, we have selected those areas where the development of new methodology, reagents and results have led to new ideas about mammary gland function and development as they are related to neoplasia.

Book A Practical Treatise on Tumors of the Mammary Gland

Download or read book A Practical Treatise on Tumors of the Mammary Gland written by Samuel Weissell Gross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Tumors of the Mammary Gland: Embracing Their Histology, Pathology, Diagnosis, and Treatment Not the least important part of the work is that in which the View is sought to be maintained by an abundant array of facts, that carcinoma may be per manently relieved by thorough operations practised in the early stage of its evolution. I am aware that this doctrine will not meet with general acceptance on the part of those purely mechanical surgeons who believe that freedom from recurrence denotes an in nocent neoplasm. In every case of final recovery mentioned in this treatise, however, the diagnosis was based upon minute examinations conducted by trustworthy microscopists, whose reports have been utilized in this inquiry to the exclusion of the de scriptions of the early writers on carcinoma.
