Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Steve E. Troutman explores the Tulpehocken Path, focusing on the lesser-known sections in Northumberland and Schuylkill Counties, Pennsylvania. He presents a history of the trail, from its earliest times, focusing on the activities of Conrad Weiser, Indian Agent for the Penns and others of note. Using contemporary and vintage maps, he suggests the possible variations of the trail and subsequently explores them himself, providing numerous pictures of key present-day locations along the Path. He then follows with accounts of the numerous historic travelers on the trails, including passages from many journals from the colonial era. Lastly, Steve connects present day locations and people to the Native Americans who lived in the Mahantongo Valley, including information about the Seven Sacred Circles near Rebuck, PA.

Book excerpt: Library Journal Best Historical Fiction 2017 “A powerful, authentic voice for a generation of women whose struggles were erased from history—a heart-smashing debut that completely satisfies.” —Jamie Ford, New York Times bestselling author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet Philadelphia, 1883. Twenty-three-year-old Lilli de Jong is pregnant and alone—abandoned by her lover and banished from her Quaker home. She gives birth at a charity for wronged women, planning to give up the baby. But the power of their bond sets her on a completely unexpected path. Unwed mothers in 1883 face staggering prejudice, yet Lilli refuses to give up her baby girl. Instead, she braves moral condemnation and financial ruin in a quest to keep the two of them alive. Lilli confides this story to her diary as it unfolds, taking readers from a charity for unwed mothers to a wealthy family’s home and onto the streets of a burgeoning American city. Her story offers a rare and harrowing view into a time when a mother’s milk is crucial for infant survival. Written with startling intimacy and compassion, this accomplished novel is both a rich historical depiction and a testament to the saving force of a woman’s love.

Download or read book Moravian Soundscapes written by Sarah Justina Eyerly and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Moravian Soundscapes, Sarah Eyerly contends that the study of sound is integral to understanding the interactions between German Moravian missionaries and Native communities in early Pennsylvania. In the mid-18th century, when the frontier between settler and Native communities was a shifting spatial and cultural borderland, sound mattered. People listened carefully to each other and the world around them. In Moravian communities, cultures of hearing and listening encompassed and also superseded musical traditions such as song and hymnody. Complex biophonic, geophonic, and anthrophonic acoustic environments—or soundscapes—characterized daily life in Moravian settlements such as Bethlehem, Nain, Gnadenhütten, and Friedenshütten. Through detailed analyses and historically informed recreations of Moravian communal, environmental, and religious soundscapes and their attendant hymn traditions, Moravian Soundscapes explores how sounds—musical and nonmusical, human and nonhuman—shaped the Moravians' religious culture. Combined with access to an interactive website that immerses the reader in mid-18th century Pennsylvania, and framed with an autobiographical narrative, Moravian Soundscapes recovers the roles of sound and music in Moravian communities and provides a road map for similar studies of other places and religious traditions in the future.
