Book excerpt: Historian Francis Parkman said of the western fur trappers and mountain men, “I defy the annals of chivalry to furnish the record of a life more wild and perilous than that of a Rocky Mountain Trapper.” Surprisingly, there was a mountain man named Miles Goodyear who was born and raised in Connecticut. He died in his early thirties but made his mark in that wild and perilous life as a trapper but also as a founder of two cities in the west, a horse trader and gold seeker. Miles Goodyear’s life story is full of intrigue, wild adventures and involvement with people of consequence in the west from the time he went west in 1836 until his death in 1849. No dime novel or prize winning book contains his story and he never wrote a journal. He is the subject of only one little known hard cover biography, an article in the Utah Historical Quarterly and a newspaper article in a Connecticut newspaper and there is only one historical marker that includes his name. Yet Miles Goodyear, who was described in a journal as “a restless native of Yankee land,” left a significant footprint on the development of the far west. It is hard to imagine how he could compress so many adventures and so much living in the short span of thirty-two years. He did make his mark in the Rocky Mountains and plains of the far west. This is his story.

Book Wayward Saints

Download or read book Wayward Saints written by Ronald Warren Walker and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A story that includes spiritualist seances, conspiracy, and an important church trial, Wayward Saints chronicles the 1870s challenge of a group of British Mormon intellectuals to Brigham Young's leadership and authority. William S. Godbe and his associates revolted because they disliked Young's authoritarian community and resented what they perceived as the church's intrusion into matters of personal choice. Expelled from the church, they established the New Movement, which eventually faltered. Both a study in intellectual history and an investigation of religious dissent, Wayward Saints explores nineteenth-century American spiritualism as well as the ideas and institutional structure of first- and second-generation Mormonism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 1888, Andrew Jenson, Danish immigrant and convert to the Mormon faith, received an unexpected invitation from church leaders to speak at their general conference. Jenson was an outsider to this conference tradition, a layman whose only standing before the main body of Latter-day Saints came from a contracted position with the Church Historian's Office. Forty-two years later, in April 1930, Jenson offered his twenty-eighth and final general conference sermon. He had become the voice of institutional record keeping in his over forty-year career as an Assistant Church Historian. His sermons demonstrated the growth and expansion of the Mormon general conference tradition in the twentieth century, as they placed the Latter-day Saint story front and center for church members to learn from and celebrate. In addition, Jenson urged conference goers to keep better personal and institutional records and believed he was often the solitary advocate for church record keeping and historical preservation. A Voice in the Wilderness presents all twenty-eight of Andrew Jenson's general conference sermons, with introductions and annotations that set them within their historical and religious contexts. His speeches capture a unique period in Mormon history, one of institutional change, accommodation, and growth. This study of Jenson's sermons uncovers the richness and diversity that thrives just beneath the surface of official ecclesiastical discourse.

Book excerpt: Railroads, tourism, and government bureaucracy combined to create modern religion in the American West, argues David Walker in this innovative study of Mormonism's ascendency in the railroad era. The center of his story is Corinne, Utah—an end-of-the-track, hell-on-wheels railroad town founded by anti-Mormon businessmen. In the disputes over this town's frontier survival, Walker discovers intense efforts by a variety of theological, political, and economic interest groups to challenge or secure Mormonism's standing in the West. Though Corinne's founders hoped to leverage industrial capital to overthrow Mormon theocracy, the town became the site of a very different dream. Economic and political victory in the West required the production of knowledge about different religious groups settling in its lands. As ordinary Americans advanced their own theories about Mormondom, they contributed to the rise of religion itself as a category of popular and scholarly imagination. At the same time, new and advantageous railroad-related alliances catalyzed LDS Church officials to build increasingly dynamic religious institutions. Through scrupulous research and wide-ranging theoretical engagement, Walker shows that western railroads did not eradicate or diminish Mormon power. To the contrary, railroad promoters helped establish Mormonism as a normative American religion.
