Les tests de corrosion sont réalisés à 800\c sous argon dans l'aluminium et 9 alliages. La carburation de al est préférentielle en bords de feuillets carbones et les orbitales pi du carbone sont peu réactives. Les énergies d'activation du processus ont été évaluées à 1400 j/mol pour pyrographites et à 650 j/mol sur les graphites polycristallins. Une coalescence des pores et un clivage des cristallites et graphite entraine un vieillissement des carbones avec leur durée d'immersion dans l'aluminium. L'apparition d'une macroporosité est progressive. Pour une tenue optimale a 800\c, on optera pour des carbones graphites très peu poreux. A des températures supérieures avoisinant 1000\c, en situation de mouillage du métal, le phénomène de clivage prend une part plus active au processus de corrosion et requiert l'utilisation de carbones à fortes liaisons interplanaires (cokes non graphitables). Des imprégnations par les phosphates ont démontré une importante capacité inhibitrice de carburation de al par empoisonnement des carbones actifs en bord de feuillets. La purification des carbones par courant de chlore à 3000\c, crée un fort réseau de capillarité. Les composites c/c sont corrodés par attaque préférentielle de la matrice carbonée, provoquant la création de fissures fatales à la tenue du matériau.

La dégradation par la corrosion dans les matériaux composites est accentuée par la présence d'un couple galvanique entre le renfort de carbone et l'alliage d'aluminium. L'amorçage et la propagation de la corrosion ont fait l'objet d'études expérimentales locales in situ a l'interface fibre/matrice ainsi que d'une modélisation semi-analytique. Il est mis en évidence que la corrosion s'amorce perpendiculairement à l'axe de la fibre puis se propage parallèlement à son axe le long de l'interface et par dissolution des carbures d'aluminium. Ces mécanismes locaux ont été comparés aux mécanismes globaux qui prennent en compte l'architecture fibreuse du composite. Une simulation par éléments frontières de la dissolution anodique a permis de proposer des solutions pour améliorer le comportement en service de ces matériaux composites.
