Book Health Disparities in Respiratory Medicine

Download or read book Health Disparities in Respiratory Medicine written by Lynn B. Gerald and published by Humana Press. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses health disparities in respiratory medicine and suggests methods to reduce them. In the United States, health disparities are well documented in the care of patients with respiratory disorders, particularly among minorities who often have higher rates of disease and poorer health outcomes. Similarly, differences in health and health outcomes exist between differing socioeconomic groups, with lower income groups generally having poorer health and higher rates of chronic illness. Health Disparities in Respiratory Medicine investigates these differing outcomes through the complex connections between access and quality of treatment available to these groups. Chapters are organized around either causes, diseases, or types of care, including tobacco smoke exposure, environmental air quality, acute respiratory distress syndrome, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and end-of-life care. This volume is an ideal resource for pulmonologists, health care administrators, and policy makers who aim to understand disparities in respiratory medicine and take steps to improve the differences among groups.

He also examines honesty in medical thinking, investigates methods of dealing with bureaucracies, and considers ways of learning to live with oneself. Finally, he evaluates the changing nature of medicine and medical research and looks into the role of minorities and women in medicine."--Jacket.

Book Good Tuberculosis Men

    Book Details:
  • Author : Carol R. Byerly
  • Publisher : U.S. Government Printing Office
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 406 pages

Download or read book Good Tuberculosis Men written by Carol R. Byerly and published by U.S. Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2013 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1917, as the United States prepared for war in Europe, Army Surgeon General William C. Gorgas recognized the threat of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to American troops. What the Army needed was some "good tuberculosis men." Despite the efforts of the nations best "tuberculosis men," the disease would become a leading cause of World War I disability discharges and veterans benefits. The fact that tuberculosis patients often experienced cycles in which they recovered their health and then fell ill again challenged government officials to judge the degree to which a person was disabled and required government care and support. This book tracks the impact of tuberculosis on the US Army from the late 1890s, when it was a ubiquitous presence in society, to the 1960s when it became a curable and controllable disease.
