Book excerpt: "This research was performed to assess the efficacy of tube-based field portable x-ray fluorescence (FPXRF) devices to evaluate RCRA heavy metal concentrations in children's products and determine potential hazardous waste toxicity characteristics by comparative analysis to inductively coupled plasma (ICP) yields per SW6010B. Sample sets consisting of wood, plastic, rubber, bulk, plated/coated, and metal matrices were purchased, size-reduced as necessary and directly analyzed three-times for 120 seconds each via FPXRF operated in the Consumer Goods/Test All mode. Subsequently, the same samples were prepared in accordance to SW3050B and analyzed via ICP at an accredited contract laboratory. Side-by-side results analysis indicates that FPXRF consistently exhibits positive bias compared to standard laboratory methods in the majority of matrices due to XRFs abilities to estimate total metallic analyte concentrations versus extract-labile substances only. Instances in which FPXRFs positive bias was absent were believed attributed to suboptimal sample homogeneity or limited sample area compared to total sample volume of SW3050B extraction. Though FPXRFs overestimation of metallic analyte concentrations does not directly correlate to SW6010B ICP yields without application of correction factors, it does provide a better indication of total versus liberated analyte presence."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portable X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) instrumentation has some unique analytical capabilities for the in situ analysis of samples in the field. These capabilities have been extended in recent years by the continuing development of solid state detectors, surface mounted electronics, digital signal processing technology, Li-ion batteries combined with a choice of rugged sealed radioisotope sources or miniature X-ray tubes that provide lightweight hand-held devices. As well as opening up new applications, in situ measurements by PXRF, where the instrument is placed in direct contact with the object to be analysed, involve the complete integration of sampling and analysis. Careful interpretation of results is therefore required, particularly when the analysis is used to estimate the bulk composition of a sample. In this monograph, an overview is given of instrumentation, analytical capabilities, and limitations in the interpretation of results, sampling considerations and applications where PXRF offers substantial advantages over conventional analytical techniques. The aim is to give the reader an insight into the capabilities of the technique and to demonstrate the contribution it can make to a range of areas of contemporary scientific interest. Chapters are written by internationally recognised scientists with practical experience of in situ analysis using portable X-ray fluorescence and demonstrates the wide range of applications for the technique. The topics covered are illustrated with diagrams and photographs where appropriate and each chapter includes supporting references to enable the reader to gain a greater understanding of a particular application. Here an EDXRF method is described for analysis of 13 hazardous (RCRA) metals in Portland cement, a typical matrix for transuranic (TRU) waste from US Department of Energy (DOE) sites. Samples are analyzed as homogeneous powders prepared by simple drying, mixing, and milling. Analyses are performed using a commercial EDXRF spectrometer equipped with an X-ray tube, a high-resolution Si(Li) detector, and fundamental parameters software for data reduction. The spectrometer is rugged and suitable for use in either mobile or fixed-based laboratories. Book excerpt: "During sampling or remediation of radiologically contaminated sites quantitative results are needed to determine where to sample or where to excavate soils. Although some portable gamma spectroscopy equipment does exist for field identification of radionuclides, they are not commonly used during remedial investigations. The current, and very common, process for sampling involves scanning soil with field portable gross measuring radiation detectors (i.e. sodium iodide, scintillation, etc.) that measure counts per minute of ionizing radiation; this does not give any information on the nuclides present or their concentrations in the soil. Samples are then collected at biased locations, based on the results of the field detectors, and sent to an on-site or off-site laboratory for analysis (i.e. gamma-spectroscopy, alpha-spectroscopy, etc. ) to determine what nuclides are in the soil and quantitate their concentration. If an on-site laboratory is not used it may take a few weeks to receive data back from off-site analysis, which inhibits real-time decision making while sampling and adds costs to a project. One potential method to determine real-time concentrations of metals in soil is through the use of a field portable x-ray fluorescence (XRF) device. This thesis will examine the relationship between laboratory isotopic thorium and uranium to XRF results of elemental uranium and thorium which are contaminants of concern found at Formally United Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) sites. The FUSRAP properties were contaminated during the United States early atomic weapons era and are being remediated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) as part of a federal remediation program. Both thorium and uranium are radioactive metals that will be investigated to determine if XRF devices can detect their presence at environmental levels of significance to assist in the investigation and remediation of future FUSRAP projects."--Abstract.
