Download or read book Tuba Concerto written by Ralph (COP) Vaughan and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2003-01-31 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tuba Concerto was written in 1953 and 1954 in response to an invitation to compose a work for the golden jubilee of the London Symphony Orchestra. Vaughan Williams was in is eighty-second year by then; an interest on unusual instrumental sonorities was a feature of his music in the latter part of his life, so his choice of tuba as solo instrument was less surprising than it might have seemed. He justified it by treating it seriously and poetically, emphasizing its lyrical capabilities rather than the more comic propensities. The work is dedicated to the London Symphony Orchestra and its then-principal tuba player, Philip Catelinet, whom the composer consulted constantly throughout the writing of the work. The lively, outer movements both conclude with extended cadenzas, while the beautifully lyrical Romanza is Vaughan Williams at his best. The brass band arrangement is by Phillip Littlemore and is a welcome addition to Faber's brass band repertoire.

Book Tuba Concerto in D Minor

Download or read book Tuba Concerto in D Minor written by Eric J. Dreggors and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing the Tuba Concerto in D minor was a long and tedious process that required help and inspiration from many different people. The process began with a suggestion from a friend to write a tuba concerto for him, and soon progressed into a thesis. Since only one tuba concerto exists in the standard repertoire (the concerto by Ralphe Vaughan-Williams), the challenge to create a new concerto was very powerful. Eleven minutes long, it is much shorter than the average concerto, but only a minute or two behind the Vaughan-Williams concerto. The first movement, the Prelude, is made to sound just like a waltz, both in form and melody. It is a five-part rondo form that begins in D minor and transitions to a different key each time there's a new section. The second movement is the Sarabande in A minor, a perfect fifth above the original key. Based around the late Johnny Cash's last recorded song, Hurt, it fits perfectly for the slow movement. The third and final movement is played as a Gigue. It is back in the original key of D minor and is played in the least amount of time of the eleven minutes the tune is performed. It begins with the Tuba alone before everyone else takes over and plays the harmony before the rest of the chamber arrives to the flight of notes.

Book excerpt: This book describes the properties of materials used for making percussion instruments for classical music played by a symphony orchestra in which the instruments could be played as a soloist instrument or as a group or several groups of instruments, as they are included into a musical work. A chapter is devoted to the bells. The scope of this book is primarily confined to percussion instruments of symphony orchestras taking into account the centuries of musical art and tradition.
