Book Rural Settlement Structure And African Development

Download or read book Rural Settlement Structure And African Development written by Marilyn Silberfein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the result of a group of researchers applying their insights and experience to a common theme. All the authors are con-cerned with rural development in Africa and all have focused on the con-nection between the development process and the arrangement of people and their built environment in rural space. Both anthropologists and geo-graphers have contributed to the dialogue on this subject and represen-tatives of the two disciplines are included in this volume. The members of this group have never all been in the same place at the same time, and so have utilized various electronic modes of commu-nication to link their locations around the world. Two conferences were organized, however, among a subset of the whole, in order to generate a group discussion. One of these meetings was a symposium on African rural development held at Temple University while a second was orga-nized at the African Studies Association Meetings in Toronto. Both opportunities helped raise issues that found their way into individual chapters. The audience in each case further stimulated our thinking.

Book The Politics of a South African Frontier

Download or read book The Politics of a South African Frontier written by Chatfield Legassick and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010-12-29 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book publishes Martin Legassick's influential doctoral thesis on the preindustrial South African frontier zone of Transorangia. The impressive formation of the Griqua states in the first half of the nineteenth century outside the borders of the Cape Colony and their relations with Sotho-Tswana polities, frontiersmen, missionaries and the British administration of the Cape take centre stage in the analysis. The Griqua, of mixed settler and indigenous descent, secured hegemony in a frontier of complex partnerships and power struggles. The author's subsequent critique of the "frontier tradition" in South African historiography drew on the insights he had gained in writing this dissertation. It served to initiate the debate about the importance of the precolonial frontier situation in South Africa for the establishment of ideas of race, the development of racial prejudice and, implicitly, the creation of segregationist and apartheid systems. Today, the constructed histories of "Griqua" and other categories of indigeneity have re emerged in South Africa as influential tools of political mobilisation and claims on resources.

Book Party Systems and Cleavage Structures in Southern Africa

Download or read book Party Systems and Cleavage Structures in Southern Africa written by Jürgen Langhanns and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the interaction of society and political parties within the electoral system in southern Africa, it is necessary to systematically investigate the social structures (cleavage analysis) and measure the success or failure of political parties against the backdrop of the election programmes (manifesto research). The focus of this research is the six polyarchies of Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and South Africa. In countries with the voting system of proportional representation, neither coalition governments nor alternative government parties have ruled since 1990. In countries with a majoritarian voting system, either coalitions have formed a government, or one party has remained unchallenged for decades. The research results show that the previous electoral outcomes are the reflection of the cleavage structure, and there are indicators in the societies examined that can meet the theoretical expectations of democratic societies in the future. In part I, the theoretical framework for the cleavage analysis and party analysis is established, which applies for the six case studies of part II. The societies are examined in terms of eight cleavages, their extension and their political relevance. The cleavages are related to the settlement area, the occupation, the income distribution, the religion, the ethnicity (race), the language heritage, the educational level and citizenship (the proportion of foreigners). In the context of the electoral system, political parties represent the social interest. Their goals are recorded as contents of the manifesto, which can be used for Wordscores to compare the political parties on the policy domains Freedom and democracy, Political system, Economy, Welfare and quality of life, Fabric of Society and Social Groups. Each domain is described by two contrasting definitions, which are used for aggregating Left-Right categorisation of the parties. The regional results in the comparative study (part III) define the categories Left, Right and Liberal of political parties. The qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) is used to define the content of the left-wing, right-wing and liberal political parties in the context of Southern Africa. At the same time, the contents of the definitions are factors in the success of parties in Southern Africa. Parties with right-wing content are found mainly among the government parties, and parties with politically left-wing or liberal content are mainly opposition parties.

Book African Cities Through Local Eyes

Download or read book African Cities Through Local Eyes written by Giuseppe Faldi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-16 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides readers with a wide overview of place-based planning and design experiments addressing such powerful transformations in the African built environment. The book is intended for students, researchers, decision-makers and practitioners engaged in planning and design for the built environment in Africa and the Global South at large.

Book Women Journalists in Namibia s Liberation Struggle Women 1985 1990

Download or read book Women Journalists in Namibia s Liberation Struggle Women 1985 1990 written by Mboono Nghidinwa and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008-12-29 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the experiences of women journalists during the last phase of Namibia's liberation struggle against South African rule. Black or white, women journalists in Namibia made significant contribu-tions to the liberation cause -including the founding of a high-profiled newspaper -whilst others worked for media sympathetic to the apart-heid government. Based on interviews and deploying feminist media theory, Maria Mboono Nghidinwa pays close attention to the gendered power relationships in the newsrooms of newspapers and radio stations at the time. She looks at the intense political intimidations which tar-geted women and, in particular, the constraints experienced by black women journalists.
