Book Implementing IBM Storage Data Deduplication Solutions

Download or read book Implementing IBM Storage Data Deduplication Solutions written by Alex Osuna and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2011-03-24 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until now, the only way to capture, store, and effectively retain constantly growing amounts of enterprise data was to add more disk space to the storage infrastructure, an approach that can quickly become cost-prohibitive as information volumes continue to grow and capital budgets for infrastructure do not. In this IBM® Redbooks® publication, we introduce data deduplication, which has emerged as a key technology in dramatically reducing the amount of, and therefore the cost associated with storing, large amounts of data. Deduplication is the art of intelligently reducing storage needs through the elimination of redundant data so that only one instance of a data set is actually stored. Deduplication reduces data an order of magnitude better than common data compression techniques. IBM has the broadest portfolio of deduplication solutions in the industry, giving us the freedom to solve customer issues with the most effective technology. Whether it is source or target, inline or post, hardware or software, disk or tape, IBM has a solution with the technology that best solves the problem. This IBM Redbooks publication covers the current deduplication solutions that IBM has to offer: IBM ProtecTIER® Gateway and Appliance IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager IBM System Storage® N series Deduplication

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many reasons why you would want to optimize your servers through virtualization using Linux on IBM® System z®: Too many distributed physical servers with low utilization A lengthy provisioning process that delays the implementation of new applications Limitations in data center power and floor space High total cost of ownership (TCO) Difficulty allocating processing power for a dynamic environment This IBM Redbooks® publication provides a technical planning guide and example for IT organizations to migrate from their x86 environment to Linux on System z. It begins by examining the benefits of migrating workloads to Linux on System z. Here, we describe the workload centric method of information technology and then discuss the benefits of migrating workloads to Linux on System z. Next, we describe total cost of ownership analyses and we guide you in understanding how to analyze your environment before beginning a migration project. We also assist you in determining the expected consolidation ratio for a given workload type. We also describe virtualization concepts along with describing the benefits of migrating from the x86 environment to guests residing on an IBM z/VM® single system image with live guest relocation. This IBM Redbooks publication walks you through a migration approach, includes planning worksheets, as well as a chapter to assist you in analyzing your own systems. We also discuss post migration considerations such as acceptance testing of functionality and performance measurements.

Book Introduction to Storage Area Networks

Download or read book Introduction to Storage Area Networks written by Jon Tate and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The superabundance of data that is created by today's businesses is making storage a strategic investment priority for companies of all sizes. As storage takes precedence, the following major initiatives emerge: Flatten and converge your network: IBM® takes an open, standards-based approach to implement the latest advances in the flat, converged data center network designs of today. IBM Storage solutions enable clients to deploy a high-speed, low-latency Unified Fabric Architecture. Optimize and automate virtualization: Advanced virtualization awareness reduces the cost and complexity of deploying physical and virtual data center infrastructure. Simplify management: IBM data center networks are easy to deploy, maintain, scale, and virtualize, delivering the foundation of consolidated operations for dynamic infrastructure management. Storage is no longer an afterthought. Too much is at stake. Companies are searching for more ways to efficiently manage expanding volumes of data, and to make that data accessible throughout the enterprise. This demand is propelling the move of storage into the network. Also, the increasing complexity of managing large numbers of storage devices and vast amounts of data is driving greater business value into software and services. With current estimates of the amount of data to be managed and made available increasing at 60% each year, this outlook is where a storage area network (SAN) enters the arena. SANs are the leading storage infrastructure for the global economy of today. SANs offer simplified storage management, scalability, flexibility, and availability; and improved data access, movement, and backup. Welcome to the cognitive era. The smarter data center with the improved economics of IT can be achieved by connecting servers and storage with a high-speed and intelligent network fabric. A smarter data center that hosts IBM Storage solutions can provide an environment that is smarter, faster, greener, open, and easy to manage. This IBM® Redbooks® publication provides an introduction to SAN and Ethernet networking, and how these networks help to achieve a smarter data center. This book is intended for people who are not very familiar with IT, or who are just starting out in the IT world.

Book DB2 9 for Z OS

Download or read book DB2 9 for Z OS written by Paolo Bruni and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Locking is the generic term used to refer to the database management system function that is required for managing interprocess concurrency and maintaining data integrity. However, locking is just one of the serialization mechanisms available in IBM℗ʼ DB2℗ʼ for z/OS℗ʼ. DB2 uses different mechanisms for serialization to achieve its goal of maximizing concurrency without losing integrity with a minimum cost in CPU, I/O, and storage resources. In this IBM Redbooks℗ʼ publication, we review and explore the different serialization mechanisms used in DB2, such as transaction (DML) locking, claims and drains, restrictive states, latching, and optimistic serialization. This book was written for application developers in order to help them better understand serialization mechanisms and how they influence application design decisions.

Book An Introduction to z VM Single System Image SSI and Live Guest Relocation LGR

Download or read book An Introduction to z VM Single System Image SSI and Live Guest Relocation LGR written by Lydia Parziale and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IBM® z/VM® 6.2 introduces significant changes to z/VM in the form of multi-system clustering technology allowing up to four z/VM instances in a single system image (SSI) cluster. This technology is important, because it offers clients an attractive alternative to vertical growth by adding new z/VM systems. In the past, this capability required duplicate efforts to install, maintain, and manage each system. With SSI, these duplicate efforts are reduced or eliminated. Support for live guest relocation (LGR) allows you to move Linux virtual servers without disruption to the business, helping you to avoid planned outages. The z/VM systems are aware of each other and can take advantage of their combined resources. LGR enables clients to avoid loss of service due to planned outages by relocating guests from a system requiring maintenance to a system that remains active during the maintenance period. Together, the SSI and LGR technologies offer substantial client value, and they are a major departure from past z/VM practices. This IBM Redbooks® publication gives you a broad understanding of the new SSI architecture and an overview of LGR. We show an LGR example that shows a typical SAP user environment. In our example, the SAP Application Server Central Instance resides on a Linux on System z® guest and an IBM DB2® 10 database server runs on z/OS®. This book is written for IT architects, who design the systems, and IT specialists, who build the systems.
