Book excerpt: In our culture, the rational self is esteemed, and we are trained to approach life from the head. However, to know ourselves, we need to get in touch with our Hearts and Heartvoice-the Voice of Truth. When we speak from the Heart, we speak with a clarity that is not besieged by emotion or the ego's motives. I call this way of communication Truthspeaking. To Truthspeak is to state clearly and simply what one thinks and feels. There is no judgment or expectation, no disguise of humor or force of anger. This manner of speech is sacred, because it wells up from the soul of our being rather than from our self-absorbed ego.Unfortunately, Truthspeaking itself is currently on the Endangered Speech List. It is rarely heard outside of remote regions where traditional earth-based cultures still exist. As Truthspeaking wanes, so do meaningful relationships, trust, and respect. My intent with this book is to help your Truthspeaking ability to renew itself by showing you how to break the habits and patterns that have kept it suppressed. Our return to Truthspeaking in this book will take the following form:¿ Part I helps us discern Truth, so that we may distinguish our Heartvoice from the shrewd callings of the ego, the intellect, and emotion.¿ Part II teaches how to respectfully listen, so that Truth can emerge. We learn that in order to become Truthspeakers, we must first become Truthlisteners.¿ Part III shows us how to control the patterned feeling responses that conceal our Truth. Avoiding negatives, expressing feelings, and detaching from outcomes open the window to understanding.¿ Part IV has us examine how humor masks, swearing distorts, and small talk sidesteps Truth. It also demonstrates how gossip creates False Truth and lies are actually a form of Truth.

Book excerpt: Women are fierce and fed-up, and they have been joining hands together for the purposes of societal change for as long as there has been injustice. Women of faith are guided by the Holy Spirit to work together to bring down these injustices, to build on the foundation Christ laid for the beloved community of God on earth. This book is women joining together to speak and act in new ways in response to the increasing challenges of our day. This book offers to all women the sustenance needed to face blatant racism, bigotry, sexism, heterosexism, and xenophobia in the world and in the church. The writers of Speaking Truth greet these challenges knowing that the Good News of Jesus Christ is bigger than any societal ill and that God has called us to play a part in God’s work of transformation. When we pray together and act together, we claim a new vision for how things can be - a vision God gives us through Scripture. We can support both ourselves and other women as we learn to find and claim our voices and end the silences imposed upon us. Speaking Truth: • Provides inspirational writings by women for women to face the societal challenges specific to today. • Includes prayers, devotions, scriptures, and inspirational quotes for special challenges. • Encourages women supporting, advocating, and praying for other women.

Book Speaking the Truth about Oneself

Download or read book Speaking the Truth about Oneself written by Michel Foucault and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Speaking the Truth about Oneself is composed of lectures that acclaimed French philosopher Michel Foucault delivered in 1982 at the University of Toronto. As is characteristic of his later work, he is concerned here with the care and cultivation of the self, which becomes the central theme of the second and third volumes of his famous History of Sexuality, published in French in 1984, the month of his death, and which are explored here in a striking and typically illuminating fashion. Throughout his career, Foucault had always been interested in the question of how constellations of knowledge and power produce and constitute subjects. But in the last phase of his life, he became especially interested not only in how subjects are constituted by outside forces but in how they constitute themselves. In this lecture series and accompanying seminar, we find Foucault focused on antiquity, starting with classical Greece, the early Roman dynasties, and concluding with fourth- and fifth-century Christian monasticism. Foucault's claim is that, in these periods, we see the development of a new kind of act-"speaking the truth" (about oneself)-as the locus of a new form of subjectivity, which he deemed important not just for historical reasons but also as something modernity could harness anew or adapt to its own purposes"--

  • Author : Adrian Johnston
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2017-09-19
  • ISBN : 3319575147
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Irrepressible Truth written by Adrian Johnston and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers readers a uniquely detailed engagement with the ideas of legendary French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. The Freudian Thing is one of Lacan’s most important texts, wherein he explains the significance and stakes of his “return to Freud” as a passionate defence of Freud’s disturbing, epoch-making discovery of the unconscious, against misrepresentations and criticisms of it. However, Lacan is characteristically cryptic in The Freudian Thing. The combination of his writing style and vast range of references renders much of his thinking inaccessible to all but a narrow circle of scholarly specialists. Johnston’s Irrepressible Truth opens up the universe of Lacanian psychoanalysis to much wider audiences by furnishing a sentence-by-sentence interpretive unpacking of this pivotal 1955 essay. In so doing, Johnston reveals the precision, rigor, and soundness of Lacan’s teachings.

  • ISBN : 1135174458
  • Pages : 161 pages

Download or read book Truth and Eros written by John Rajchman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this reissused work, first published in 1991, John Rajchman isolates the question of ethics in the work of Foucault and Lacan and explores its ramifications and implications for the present day. He demonstrates that the question of ethics was at once the most difficult and the most intimate question for these two authors, offering a complex point of intersection between them. As such, he argues that it belongs to the great tradition that is concerned with the passion or eros of philosophy and of its "will to truth". Truth and Eros suggests a way of reading Foucault and Lacan as philosophers who re-eroticised the activity of thought in our time, opeing new and different spaces for thought and action - new types of subjectivity.

Book Baroque Self Invention and Historical Truth

Download or read book Baroque Self Invention and Historical Truth written by Christopher Braider and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his monumental study, Christopher Braider explores the dialectical contest between history and truth that defines the period of cultural transition called the 'baroque'. For example, Annibale Carracci's portrayal of the Stoic legend of Hercules at the Crossroads departs from earlier, more static representations that depict an emblematic demigod who has already rejected the fallen path of worldly Pleasure for the upward road of heroic Virtue. Braider argues that, in breaking with tradition in order to portray a tragic soliloquist whose dominant trait is agonized indecision, Carracci joins other baroque artists, poets and philosophers in rehearsing the historical dilemma of choice itself. Carracci's picture thus becomes a framing device that illuminates phenomena as diverse as the construction of gender in baroque painting and science, the Pauline ontology of art in Caravaggio and Rembrandt, the metaphysics of baroque soliloquy and the dismantling of Cartesian dualism in Cyrano de Bergerac and Pascal.
