Eve Benedict is the kind of subject who could make any biographer’s career. Last of the movie goddesses, she has two Oscars, four ex-husbands, and a legion of lovers, both famous and infamous. Now she is ready to write a tell-all memoir that has even Hollywood’s richest and most powerful worried. Julia Summers never dreamed of being chosen to tell Eve’s story. But even if it means transplanting herself and her ten-year-old son from their quiet life in Connecticut to the withering limelight of Beverly Hills, it’s an opportunity too great to pass up. But Julia never imagined how far someone would go to keep Eve Benedict’s book from being published . . . until she discovers just how dark Eve’s secrets are. And the one man Julia hopes she can trust—Eve’s stepson, Paul Winthrop—may have the most to gain if his stepmother’s story is never told . . . and if Julia’s life ends before she can write a word of the truth. “Roberts does a beautiful job weaving together the movie star’s tittilating tales and the love story that develops.”—USA Today

Book excerpt: A moving essay collection promoting freedom, self-love, and divine wholeness for Black women and opening new levels of understanding and ideological transformation for non-Black women and allies “Candice Marie Benbow is a once-in-a-generation theologian, the kind who, having ground dogma into dust with the fine point of a stiletto, leads us into the wide-open spaces of faith.”—Brittney Cooper, author of Eloquent Rage and co-editor of The Crunk Feminist Collection Blurring the boundaries of righteous and irreverent, Red Lip Theology invites us to discover freedom in a progressive Christian faith that incorporates activism, feminism, and radical authenticity. Essayist and theologian Candice Marie Benbow’s essays explore universal themes like heartache, loss, forgiveness, and sexuality, and she unflinchingly empowers women who struggle with feeling loved and nurtured by church culture. Benbow writes powerfully about experiences at the heart of her Black womanhood. In honoring her single mother’s love and triumphs—and mourning her unexpected passing—she finds herself forced to shed restrictions she’d been taught to place on her faith practice. And by embracing alternative spirituality and womanist theology, and confronting staid attitudes on body positivity and LGBTQ+ rights, Benbow challenges religious institutions, faith leaders, and communities to reimagine how faith can be a tool of liberation and transformation for women and girls.

Book excerpt: "Jeff Pearlman has captured the swagger of the '86 Mets. You don't have to be a Mets fan to enjoy this book—it's a great read for all baseball enthusiasts." —Philadelphia Daily News Award-winning Sports Illustrated baseball writer Jeff Pearlman returns to an innocent time when a city worshipped a man named Mookie and the Yankees were the second-best team in New York. It was 1986, and the New York Mets won 108 regular-season games and the World Series, capturing the hearts (and other assorted body parts) of fans everywhere. But their greatness on the field was nearly eclipsed by how bad they were off it. Led by the indomitable Keith Hernandez and the young dynamic duo of Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry, along with the gallant Scum Bunch, the Amazin’s left a wide trail of wreckage in their wake—hotel rooms, charter planes, a bar in Houston, and most famously Bill Buckner and the hated Boston Red Sox. With an unforgettable cast of characters—including Doc, Straw, the Kid, Nails, Mex, and manager Davey Johnson—this “affectionate but critical look at this exciting season” (Publishers Weekly) celebrates the last of baseball’s arrogant, insane, rock-and-roll-and-party-all-night teams, exploring what could have been, what should have been, and what never was.

Book excerpt: The Richer(TM) Woman is the true story of a young woman's pursuit of wealth, taking her on a journey of career validation, personal identity, marital conflict, adultery and spiritual enlightenment, and leading her to the discovery of true wealth and purpose.A certified wealth and life coach, Omilola Oshikoya's autobiographical debut is packed with wealth and life-coaching tips to help every woman live the Richer(TM) life: a truly well-rounded life that is successful, without the need to compromise on personal relationships in order to gain financial success.ForwardMy husband and I read the draft copy of the RicherWoman that was sent to us with a mixture of excitement andapprehension. Excitement, because of the candour andrealness of the content - and the balm we knew it would befor many for that very reason - and apprehension, for thesame reason. We wondered if sharing so much would makeOmilola vulnerable to attack. But I sat back on completion, really awed and inspired by her courage. I realise herpersonal story and journey is critical to the healing power ofthis book. It's this dangerous vulnerability that is sopowerful. Even in 2017, it's rare, especially in Christiancircles, to experience this level of truth. In John 8:32, Jesussaid '.... the truth will set you free'. I believe Omilola's truthwill set many free. From the initial details of her fledging love life insecondary school days to the more tumultuous universityromance, and then onto meeting the man who would be herhusband, we see the lessons she needed to learn unfoldingthrough the choices she makes, and we see the consequencesthat follow. We see how her brokenness drove her to makepoor relationship choices and to build a career that robbedher family life, and we see God's redeeming grace woven in as'Mr Mysterious' arrives on the scene. We see how asfrustrations, accidents and God's whispers lead her into acareer of purpose. We learn that, far from being just a funky 10slogan, 'Do it Afraid' is something she's lived. It's been both aspringboard into purpose and a continual source of challengeto reach higher and do better.Don't be fooled! While this is an 'equipping book' -skilling you, especially in part C, to fulfill potential - itscentral message is about much more than career prominenceand success; it is also about growing into a godly wife andmother, and discovering yourself as a unique human beingand an object of divine love. It's about learning to loveyourself and discover your unique path through this world. It's a story of discovering God, growing in God and walkingwith God.The book's conversational style is endearing andenchanting. It ropes you in, like the aromas wafting out of acandy store draw you in as you walk by, and delivers truth ina sweet and accessible manner. I know this book will makeyou chuckle, reflect on your life, reconsider your prioritiesand provoke your faith. Then Omilola's goal will be realized: to challenge you to start your journey to becoming the Richerwoman God made you to be.Are you ready? Fasten your seat belt and enjoy the ride.We are off to a great destination!Bimbo Fola-AladeCo-Lead Pastor, The Liberty Church, London

Book Sketches from Childhood

Download or read book Sketches from Childhood written by Milan Svanderlik and published by epubli. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milan Svanderlik, author of Sketches from Childhood, was born in Czechoslovakia on 27 February 1948, the day its democratic government was overthrown by the Communist Party. The ensuing doctrinaire regime, committed to a more just and equal society. Focussed first on dismantling the bourgeois establishment, and what had been the post-war ethnic cleansing of non-Slav peoples metamorphosed into the persecution of anyone failing to espouse Stalinism – once-free citizens soon found themselves imprisoned within borders that bristled fiercely with barbed wire and armed guards. Milan's Czech parents were born in Yugoslavia, where his father fought with Tito's Partizans to liberate that nation from the occupying Nazi forces. After the war, he moved his young family to Northern Czechoslovakia, seeking a congenial new life amongst fellow Czechs. Such dreams were shattered when the Czech Communist coup coincided with Marshal Tito's growing intransigence towards Stalin: because of Milan's father's past links with Tito, he was immediately suspect. The family was ostracised, with social exclusion quickly morphing into several years of virtual house arrest; categorised as 'undesirables', they were finally deported in 1955. These Sketches, the story of a childhood lived through turbulent times, comprise both written memoir and some 36 contemporary photographs, focussing in detail on the period, 1948 to 1956. Born in Czechoslovakia, the author, Milan Svanderlik, grew up in Yugoslavia, worked briefly in Switzerland, and has lived for almost 50 years in London. A photographer, artist and writer, he is a veteran observer of the extraordinary diversity and beauty of nature, people and life in general.
