Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In centuries past, the church has used catechisms to teach foundational Christian doctrines. Today, this communal practice of learning basic beliefs via questions and answers has largely been lost. Seeking to restore this ancient method of teaching to the regular life of the church, The New City Catechism Devotional is a gospel-centered, modern-day resource that not only summarizes important Christian beliefs through 52 questions and answers but also helps readers meditate on and be transformed by those doctrines. Each question features devotional commentary written by leading contemporary and historical figures such as John Piper, Timothy Keller, Kevin DeYoung, D. A. Carson, Alistair Begg, Mark Dever, Augustine, John Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, John Owen, Martin Luther, and many others. Each question also includes a relevant Scripture reading and short prayer. Designed for use in a variety of contexts, including with families, churches, and small groups, The New City Catechism Devotional stands as a valuable resources for helping adults and children alike learn the key doctrines that stand at the heart of the Christian faith.
Download or read book The Politics of Truth written by Charles Wright Mills and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2008-09-11 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C. Wright Mills was a radical public intellectual, a tough-talking, motorcycle-riding anarchist from Texas who taught sociology at Columbia University. Mills's three most influential books--The Power Elite, White Collar, and The Sociological Imagination--were originally published by OUP and are considered classics. The first collection of his writings to be published since 1963, The Politics of Truth contains 23 out-of-print and hard-to-find writings which show his growth from academic sociologist to an intellectual maestro in command of a mature style, a dissenter who sought to inspire the public to oppose the drift toward permanent war. Given the political deceptions of recent years, Mills's truth-telling is more relevant than ever. Seminal papers including "Letter to the New Left" appear alongside lesser known meditations such as "Are We Losing Our Sense of Belonging?" John Summers provides fresh insights in his introduction, which gives an overview of Mills's life and career. Summers has also written annotations that establish each piece's context and has drawn up a comprehensive bibliography of Mills's published and unpublished writings.

These essays constitute major contributions to the current debates that the connection between truth and fiction continually enlivens, and give a sense of the directions in which research on this question is heading.
Download or read book Seeking Truth and Hiding Facts written by Jeremy L. Wallace and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A few numbers came to define Chinese politics, until they did not count what mattered and what they counted did not measure up. Seeking Truth argues that the Chinese government adopted a system of limited, quantified vision in order to survive the disasters unleashed by Mao Zedong's ideological leadership, explains how that system worked, and analyzes how problems accumulated in its blind spots leading Xi Jinping to take the regime into a neopolitical turn. Xi's new normal is an attempt fix the problems of the prior system, as well as a hedge against an inability to do so. The book argues that while of course dictators stay in power through coercion and cooptation, they also do so by convincing their populations and themselves of their right to rule. Quantification is one tool in this persuasive arsenal, but it comes with its own perils"--

Download or read book Spectacles of Truth in Classical Greek Philosophy written by Andrea Wilson Nightingale and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-12 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In fourth-century Greece (BCE), the debate over the nature of philosophy generated a novel claim: that the highest form of wisdom is theoria, the rational 'vision' of metaphysical truths (the 'spectator theory of knowledge'). This 2004 book offers an original analysis of the construction of 'theoretical' philosophy in fourth-century Greece. In the effort to conceptualise and legitimise theoretical philosophy, the philosophers turned to a venerable cultural practice: theoria (state pilgrimage). In this practice, an individual journeyed abroad as an official witness of sacralized spectacles. This book examines the philosophic appropriation and transformation of theoria, and analyses the competing conceptions of theoretical wisdom in fourth-century philosophy. By tracing the link between traditional and philosophic theoria, this book locates the creation of theoretical philosophy in its historical context, analysing theoria as a cultural and an intellectual practice. It develops a new, interdisciplinary approach, drawing on philosophy, history and literary studies.

Download or read book The Truth about the Tribulation written by Jim Lewis and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-10-23 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was in High School in the early 1960s, I was taught there was nothing more that needed to happen before the rapture of the saints and that the tribulation could come at any time. If that was the case, what was God waiting for? So my wife and I have read many books on end time events since we were married. But they all seemed to repeat what I learned in high school. So there is a great thing God does. He equips the called. That is what he did with me. God is the true author of this book. When I didn’t know a word or have any idea how to proceed, I prayed and God allowed the words to flow and gave me understanding. That is how this book came to be. About ten years ago, I started serious research on the subject. I found the answers were not as I was taught during my high school years. The more I studied, the more truth I found. I decided to put what I learned into a book to teach others the real truth about the tribulation and what will happen in the Last Days. They say what you don’t know can’t hurt you. I found out that’s a lie. There are things you need to know before the tribulation starts. This book is about the Tribulation, culminating in the Battle of Armageddon, and the 1000 reign of Christ on Earth, occurring in the near future.
