Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Story of Hamlet and Ophelia It is possible to form a conception of an intelligent, intellectual, educated man to whom the Tragedy of Hamlet is unknown, to whom the name Hamlet conveys no idea; and until a critic places himself in the condition of impartiality and lack of prejudice in which this imaginary man would be, he is not perfectly fitted to judge of Shakespeare's greatest play. The conceptions and misconceptions imposed on him by actors and commentators must warp his judgment and control his understanding. It is asserted that Hamlet is a study for the closet, rather than a drama to be presented on the stage; and the authority for the assertion is the play itself, with its difficulties of stage interpretation. True it is, that our imaginary man, who had never heard of the Tragedy, would conclude that Booth's, or Barrett's, or Irving's, or Fechter's adaptation is not a coherent, self-explanatory dramatic work; its presentation would seem to him only a series of scarcely connected tableaux vivants, with fragments of descriptive dialogue. Haunted by a ghost and arguing with his girlfriend Ophelia, Hamlet struggles to take revenge, as delay and feigned insanity preoccupy him. Book excerpt: Passion, romance, drama, humor, and tragedy intertwine in this compulsively readable Hamlet retelling, from the perspective of a strong-willed, modern-day Ophelia. Meet Ophelia, high school senior, daughter of the Danish king's most trusted adviser, and longtime girlfriend of Prince Hamlet of Denmark. She lives a glamorous life and has a royal social circle, and her beautiful face is splashed across magazines and television screens. But it comes with a price--her life is ruled not only by Hamlet's fame and his overbearing royal family but also by the paparazzi who hound them wherever they go. After the sudden and suspicious death of his father, the king, the devastatingly handsome Hamlet spirals dangerously toward madness, and Ophelia finds herself torn, with no one to turn to. All Ophelia wants is to live a normal life. But when you date a prince, you have to play your part. Ophelia rides out this crazy roller coaster life, and lives to tell her story in live television interviews.

Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller The groundbreaking work that poses one of the most provocative questions of a generation: what is happening to the selves of adolescent girls? As a therapist, Mary Pipher was becoming frustrated with the growing problems among adolescent girls. Why were so many of them turning to therapy in the first place? Why had these lovely and promising human beings fallen prey to depression, eating disorders, suicide attempts, and crushingly low self-esteem? The answer hit a nerve with Pipher, with parents, and with the girls themselves. Crashing and burning in a “developmental Bermuda Triangle,” they were coming of age in a media-saturated culture preoccupied with unrealistic ideals of beauty and images of dehumanized sex, a culture rife with addictions and sexually transmitted diseases. They were losing their resiliency and optimism in a “girl-poisoning” culture that propagated values at odds with those necessary to survive. Told in the brave, fearless, and honest voices of the girls themselves who are emerging from the chaos of adolescence, Reviving Ophelia is a call to arms, offering important tactics, empathy, and strength, and urging a change where young hearts can flourish again, and rediscover and reengage their sense of self.
