Book True Obedience in the Church

Download or read book True Obedience in the Church written by Dr. Peter Kwasniewski and published by Crisis Publications. This book was released on 2021-12-22 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pope Benedict XVI affirmed the ongoing growth and perpetual validity of the Traditional Latin Mass, insisting that “what earlier generations held as sacred remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful.” However, with the 2021 release of Traditionis Custodes, his successor has declared precisely the opposite, sending shockwaves through the Church by calling for the restriction and eventual suppression of her most beautiful and venerable form of worship — and the one experiencing the most dramatic and impassioned growth. What is a conscientious Catholic to do? In this pivotal book, Dr. Peter Kwasniewski offers an essential treatise on the question of obedience in the Church—whence it derives and how it is to be properly and prudently understood and lived. He explores St. Thomas Aquinas’s guidelines on the subject, what type of obedience is necessary for salvation, and which types are lawful and unlawful. Can there be situations where the usual structures of obedience become impediments to, rather than facilitators of, the Church’s mission and the good of souls? Have there been instances in Church history where faithful priests have exercised their ministry in violation of ordinary canonical norms? How should the clergy respond if the traditional Latin Mass is forbidden to them or if it were to be declared “abrogated”? What is the proper role of conscience and how are liberal and conservative views of it defective? Other questions on obedience that Dr. Kwasniewski deftly engages include: Is it ever licit for individuals to follow Enlightenment ideology and be their own authority? What should you do when your superior instructs you to do something in contravention of God’s law? Why is opposing the traditional liturgy equivalent to opposing the work of the Holy Spirit and harming the Church’s common good? Are Catholics required to live in blind obedience, even in situations of anarchy or breakdown, corruption or apostasy? Can Catholics who strive to preserve traditional beliefs and practices ever be credibly denounced as disobedient revolutionaries? Why are unjust laws acts of violence?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the sixtieth anniversary of Sacrosanctum Concilium, the situation on the ground for Catholics is more chaotic than ever. A liturgical reform, meant to usher in a new age of full churches and ecumenical rapprochement, delivered neither; instead, churches are emptying and closing at an unprecedented rate. Meanwhile, an ancient old rite, grown to maturity in the Middle Ages, encrusted with Baroque pearls, and officially pronounced dead in the 1960s, has made an astonishing return around the world. Tolerated by Paul VI, permitted worldwide by John Paul II, declared free for everyone by Benedict XVI, and most recently put under ban once more by Francis, the Tridentine Mass remains a powerful and polarizing reality in the Church of Rome—an ark of holiness and beauty to the priests and faithful who love it, a belligerent “backwardism” to those who seek its abolition. In this state of spiritual civil war, questions of authority and obedience are never far from anyone’s mind. Bound by Truth grapples with the momentous issues of authority, obedience, tradition, and the common good. Part I, “Papacy, Patrimony, and Piety,” addresses the teaching of Vatican I on the pope’s universal jurisdiction; the limits of his authority in light of other authoritative principles such as liturgical tradition and local custom; the properly Catholic way to interpret and follow the Magisterium; and the virtue of intelligent, God-fearing, and communally perfective obedience versus its vicious distortions—willful rebelliousness on the one hand, and a blind, thoughtless, self-destructive submissiveness on the other. Part II, “Faithful Resistance,” looks at historical examples of prelates who legitimately pushed back against papal overreach; discusses how clergy should navigate unjust episcopal decrees on private Masses, concelebration, the use of the Rituale Romanum, etc.; shares advice and strategies for laity who seek to promote and defend tradition in their dioceses; and draws inspiration from persecuted religious sisters, whether their tormentors were Soviet Communists or apparatchiks of the postconciliar ecclesiastical bureaucracy. “Peter Kwasniewski is a sane and learned voice crying out from within a Catholic Church which—in its earthly, visible aspect—seems to have lost its mind.”—SEBASTIAN MORELLO “Examines the difficult topics of authority and obedience with forthrightness and a willingness to engage even the most controversial debates… a timely guide to how Catholics might respond when truth and tradition are under attack by those who should be their foremost defenders.”—ERIC SAMMONS “As with his earlier books, so here, Kwasniewski emerges as an apostle of tradition and a paladin of the ancient Roman rite. A book to be treasured.”—MICHAEL SIRILLA “Both summarizes the author’s recent thought and serves as a guide and resource for beleaguered faithful… theoretically challenging and eminently useful.”—STUART CHESSMAN “Critiques the latest (and historically worst) abandonment of our grip on the cord that ties us, through tradition, to the Word Incarnate—and indicates the paths along which health and sanity will be recovered.”—JOHN C. RAO “Offered with his usual mixture of scholarship and wit, Kwasniewski’s analysis is primarily and accurately applied to the situation in the Church, but the principles he explores in this book also admit of far wider application.”—CHARLES A. COULOMBE “This thoroughly researched and cogently argued book could not have been published at a better time.”—BRIAN M. MCCALL

Download or read book The Obedience Paradox written by Mary Stanford and published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book was released on 2022-08-26 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few concepts in Christianity are more misunderstood than obedience. Words like submissive, subject, and obedient can appear utterly incompatible with the fundamental equality that Jesus offers to us in baptism. Yet headship and obedience within marriage has been preached authoritatively throughout the Church’s history. When properly understood and lived out, obedience is, in fact, liberating. The Obedience Paradox illuminates the subject by examining the relationship between husband and wife in marriage as an image of Christ’s relationship to the Church. Presenting the sexual complementarity of husband and wife as an expression of gift, this book probes the meaning and power of receptivity in a relationship. While a marriage certainly involves mutual giving and receiving, a husband most authentically lives headship when he acts as a generous giver towards his wife. Correspondingly, a wife practices authentic obedience when she graciously receives of her husband’s self-gift. Understanding obedience as the free reception of a gift unveils its unique potential to make us more free and to bring about deeper spiritual union between persons, both human and divine. “Modern Catholics often have difficulty identifying with traditional concepts of masculinity, femininity, and marriage. Rather than gloss over these seemingly troublesome categories, Mary Stanford offers a new path forward. In her novel exploration of the true meaning of obedience, Mary reveals the freedom God offers to men and women in their vocations as loving wives and husbands.” – Fr. Patrick Mary Briscoe, OP, editor-in-chief of Aleteia “Mary’s book is fresh and delightful, provocative and persuasive. She blends biblical and theological knowledge with wisdom derived from attentiveness to the practicalities of married life and with impressive insight into the male and female psyches. She writes so beautifully that one wants to pause regularly just to appreciate her phrasing as well as her illuminating concepts. This book makes a true contribution to the ever-vexing question of right relationships between spouses. It explains well the importance of freedom and trust involved in women lovingly submitting to their husbands in marriages dedicated to following Christ in all things.” – Janet E. Smith, Ph.D., Father McGivney Chair of Life Ethics (retired), Sacred Heart Major Seminary, Detroit, MI, author of Humanae Vitae: A Generation Later and A Right to Privacy “For our culture, perhaps the greatest stumbling block in the Catholic faith is its emphasis on obedience. Not only the faithful’s obedience to God and his Church but also (and primarily) the Son’s obedience to the Father. Drawing from the Church’s Tradition and Pope Saint John Paul II’s writings in particular, Mary Stanford brings out both the beauty and the challenge of obedience in God’s highest natural creation, the family. Her work will benefit engaged and married couples in particular and all who desire to deepen their appreciation of this great paradox, the obedience that frees and ennobles.” — The Very Rev. Paul D. Scalia, Episcopal Vicar for Clergy, Diocese of Arlington, author of That Nothing May Be Lost “Any couple—new to marriage or old—would do well to consider the exposition of Scripture and Tradition set forth by Mary Stanford, as well as her enlivening exposition of theological ideas in a contemporary setting. The volatile aspects of marriage are given ballast from Stanford’s pondering that most weighty matter: How to bring concord between two hearts bound in the Sacrament to mutual service and devotion and yet part of a human world of passion and weariness. In effect, Mary Stanford dares to ask the question of how marriage can work. Bolder still, she attempts an answer.” – William Fahey, Ph.D., President, Thomas More College of Liberal Arts “This book opens a new way to understand obedience in marriage and in the Faith. As such, Mary Stanford rescues the subject from much of its contemporary bad psychology. Very important and highly recommended.” – Paul C. Vitz, Senior Scholar/Professor, Divine Mercy University, Professor of Psychology Emeritus, New York University “There was a time when the words, ‘love, honor, and obey’ were standard fare for marriage vows. No longer. Over the years, the word ‘obey’ mistakenly became synonymous with the word ‘slavery,’ thus offending our modern sensibilities. Consequently, it has been replaced with more generic words, such as ‘cherish’ or ‘respect.’ In The Obedience Paradox: Finding True Freedom in Marriage, Mary Stanford breathes new life into the word ‘obedience,’ arguing that obedience, correctly understood, is the ticket to authentic freedom.” — Terry Polakovic, author of Life and Love: Opening Your Heart to God’s Design and Women of Hope: Doctors of the Church “That true freedom is the fruit of obedience is paradoxical indeed. But if obedience featured squarely in the saving action of Jesus (and now the Church), then it must also occupy the heart of the believer. Mary Stanford shows — for those with ears to hear — how obedience leads to a life of freedom, joy, and holiness for all — wives, husbands, clergy, religious.” — Christopher Carstens, Office for Sacred Worship, Diocese of La Crosse “A work that combines courage and wisdom, Mary Stanford’s The Obedience Paradox successfully negotiates one of modern Catholicism’s ‘Third Rails.’ This work is deep yet approachable, an incarnational outworking of learned theology and lived praxis valuable for both clergy and laity, but particularly for those preparing for marriage. In it, obedience and belief are recast in robust, optimistic ways that mirror our bodily and spiritual realities. This is a sensitive counter-cultural affirmation of human dignity in light of modern efforts at dehumanization and depersonalization.” – Donald Prudlo, Warren Professor of Catholic Studies, Department of Philosophy and Religion, University of Tulsa “Few today have the courage publicly to defend the hierarchical primacy of the husband and father. Stanford does, and she offers compelling and attractive arguments in defense of the beauty and wisdom of this teaching.” — Christopher J. Malloy, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Theology, University of Dallas, author of False Mercy: Recent Heresies Distorting Catholic Truth About the Author Mary Stanford is a speaker, teacher, and writer on Catholic marriage and family life. She is an adjunct professor at Christendom College and has a master’s degree in theological studies from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. She and her husband, Trey, have seven children.

Book Stumbling Toward Obedience

Download or read book Stumbling Toward Obedience written by David R. Hawkins and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-07-05 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus demonstrated complete submission to the Fathers will to the point of His confident assertion, I always do those things that please My Father (John 8:29). He gave Himself in humility at Calvary to satisfy Gods wrath against all sin, as well as all sinners, and declared from the cross, It is finished. He then experienced death but rose in victory over death, thus proving His claims to divinity and giving to all His spiritual descendants resurrection power for daily living. So what is to be our response to all Christ Jesus is and all that He has suffered and accomplished on our behalf? What should be our lifes focus, our objective, our agenda, and our passion? Obedience to the things our Lord and Savior has commanded. Obedience is our duty, to be sure, but it is more than that. It is the way we express our thanksgiving for what Christ has done for us. It is gratefulness lived out on a daily basis. This kind of living involves a consistent orientation toward laying aside personal or selfish desires and agendas that bring us temporal gratification. Instead, we embrace what Jesus Christ tells us to do: to proclaim the gospel of hope to those who know it not. This is the highest expression of gratefulness from a life made new by the living Lord. Your culture, your communities, your friends, your co-workers, and your family members need to hear a word from God. You and I are the delivery persons for Gods message. We are the spokespersons for the gospel of Jesus Christ! We are the ones to whom God has said, Arise, go to Nineveh. Our Nineveh, dear people of God, is the lost people around us.

Book The School of Obedience

Download or read book The School of Obedience written by Andrew Murray and published by Aneko Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. – John 15:10 God will not honor the person who is not obedient. For us to have favor with God, obedience is of utmost importance. To obey is better than sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22). This is evident from the very beginning of the Bible to the very end: Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have a right to the tree of life (Revelation 22:14). From Paradise lost to Paradise regained, the necessity for obedience remains the same. It is only obedience that restores access to the tree of life and favor with God. While the original disobedience was the cause of humanity's fall, through the obedience of Christ to the Father, and through our obedience to Christ, we can once again be restored. Although he was the Son of God, yet he learned obedience by the things which he suffered; and being made perfect, he became the author of eternal saving health unto all those that hearken unto him (Hebrews 5:8-9). Let this study awaken in you an earnest desire to fully know God’s will concerning this truth. Let us unite in praying that the Holy Spirit will show us how defective the Christian’s life is in which obedience does not rule everything. Let us desire to learn how that life can be exchanged for one of full surrender to absolute obedience, and how certain it is that God, through Christ, will enable us to live it out. List of Chapters 1. Obedience – What Bible Says About It 2. The Obedience of Christ 3. Obtaining the Desire to Obey 4. Preparing to Obey 5. Intentional Obedience 6. Obedience and Faith 7. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although I attended church most of my life, I was lost: I looked at the sky and asked, "Who are you? Tell me what to do, and I will do it." Those words and the actions that followed unlocked the pathway to knowing God, hearing His voice, and reaping the rewards of doing His Word. True personal stories reveal the truth of God's Word, the importance of understanding it, and the spiritual progress accomplished by actually doing it. Any reader will identify with the journey because there is nothing special about the author, yet the responses from God are extraordinary. Endorsements: Scott's spiritual journey and the building of his relationship with the one true God is one that any man or woman can relate to. This book is a compelling revelation of what God can do to transform our human and sinful nature into a life that is spiritually deep, rich, and abundant through obedience to God's Word. Scott provides a practical approach on how to execute that obedience and thus have a deeper and more meaningful relationship with our Lord and Savior - Jesus Christ. The personal examples and revelations that the Lord imparted to Scott through people, places and circumstances shows us that our Lord meets us right where we are, and teaches us what we can do to follow him and have a more intimate relationship with him. I pray the Lord will use this book to lead many souls to Christ and I thank God for Scott's perseverance and discipline in completing this work. Nancy A. Cline, Senior Human Resources Leader. Scott Harris is evidence that God will take an honest challenge! Proving change in life is possible no matter how late we ask, Scott was willing to do whatever He said. Scott precisely records each step of what he heard from the Lord on disciplines to practice, confirmed in the living Word and by his response of obedience. He wants others to be able to discover God is faithful to change and use us if we are serious to follow His ways. I found his testimony easy to read; it piqued my curiosity and stimulated questions from within. This book is just the beginning for Scott; I am counting on more discoveries by this warrior. Christia Ashmore, Global Media Outreach Missionary. About the Author: Scott thoroughly enjoys hiking with his wife in the captivating scenery of the Great Smoky Mountains with endless trails that lead to waterfalls and breathtaking views. He finds many correlations between hiking through the forest and the spiritual journey of following Christ. Scott and Gigi enjoy a wonderful family of five children and eleven grandchildren living mostly in New England, albeit excited to visit this land known as "God's Country."

Download or read book OBEDIENCE the True Act of Worship written by Ope Rowland and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-19 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You might have voted for the opposition in the last election and claim the present president is not your president; you are only deceiving yourself. Your choice and preference does not matter again; the president remains the president. Whether you voted for him, his opponents or you abstained, he is still the president.God has made Christ Lord through the processes of purchase, inheritance and designation. One's response to this truth could be to reject him or accept his lordship. Whether one accept his lordship or not, it does not change him from being Lord. So many people have acknowledged the lordship of Christ publicly and privately. So many people say 'Jesus is Lord', but indeed and in reality, Jesus is not their Lord as their allegiance is not with Christ. To say Jesus is Lord is to pledge allegiance. The proper response to the Lordship of Christ is to worship him. Worship is beyond attending religious services and gatherings. In worship, we relate with the Lord from the position of righteousness as we stand in obedience to the gospel. In worship, we serve and surrender all to Christ in obedience. In worship, we continuously express our love and his life through our obedience. In worship, our lives come in union with the Lord, as we obediently trust in him.The call to worship is a call to obedience.

Book The Insanity of Obedience

Download or read book The Insanity of Obedience written by Nik Ripken and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wise Sheep Among the Wolves All Christian disciples have one thing in common: as they carry the gospel across the ocean and across the street, persecution will become the norm for those who choose to follow Jesus. How believers respond in the face of persecution reveals everything about their level of faith and obedience. The Insanity of Obedience is a bold challenge to global discipleship. Nik Ripken exposes the danger of safe Christianity and calls readers to something greater. The Insanity of Obedience challenges Christians in the same, provocative way that Jesus did. This book dares you—and prepares you—to cross the street and the oceans with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Some of Jesus’ instructions sound uncomfortable and are potentially dangerous. We may be initially encouraged by His declaration, “I am sending you out.” But how are we to respond when He then tells us that He is sending us out “like sheep among wolves"? In light of the words of Jesus, how can modern day believers rest comfortably in the status quo? How can we embrace casual faith in light of the radical commands of Jesus which are anything but casual? Ripken brings decades of ministry experience in some of the most persecuted areas of the world to bear on our understanding of faith in Jesus. The Insanity of Obedience is a call to roll up your sleeves . . . and to follow and partner with Jesus in the toughest places on this planet. "We have the high privilege of answering Jesus’ call to go," Ripken says. "But let us be clear about this: we go on His terms, not ours. If we go at all, we go as sheep among wolves." Jesus gives us Himself. And He gives us the tools necessary for those who dare to journey with Him.
