Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Biblical Criticism I should hardly have ventured of my own accord to have undertaken what at the present moment is so serious a task as the attempt to write on the criticism of the Bible. But when requested by others to undertake the task I did not feel that I was justified in declining it. The question is a most important one in itself, and at the present moment it is supremely so. The defence of the traditional belief in regard to the Old Testament is at present the unpopular, or as has been suggested to me by a friend, the "unfashionable" side of the question. I am aware that in undertaking it I shall incur a great deal of hostile criticism. I have no right to shrink from such criticism. I have myself criticized freely, perhaps in some cases unsparingly, the views to which I have felt compelled to take exception. I shall therefore have no reason to complain if I am criticized unsparingly myself. I have not, however, I believe, treated any of those with whom it has been my misfortune to differ, with unfairness or disrespect. If I have misrepresented any one, I certainly have not done so intentionally. I may therefore, I trust, lay claim to candid treatment in return. Book Reasonable Biblical Criticism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reasonable Biblical Criticism Classic Reprint written by Willis J. Beecher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reasonable Biblical Criticism Agnostic or cryptoagnostic criticism are not of neces sity precisely the same thing with what is currently called the newer criticism or the Modern View; but unfortunately the Modern View is saturated with agnostic elements. Many of the important articles in the Encyclopedia Biblica are from the point of view of men who would not shrink from being called agnostic. In the articles in several other recent books of reference, in such a volume as Driver's Introduction, and in a multitude of other books and articles, there is an element of agnosticism less outspoken, less sustained, less consistent. This'is true even of many works which are relatively so conservative that the bolder advocates of the Modern View regard them as mere compromise. In this little volume I am not attacking the Modern View as such, but only the agnostic or cryptoagnostic elements in it. Book Biblical Criticism and Modern Thought

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Criticism and Modern Thought: Or the Place of the Old Testament Documents in the Life of to-Day The author of the present volume was appointed to the Chancellor's Lectureship of Queen's University in 1906 and 1907, and delivered to the Theological Alumni Association the nine lectures which form the substance of the book. Chapter I., which now serves as an Introduction, appeared in 1901 as an article in The Biblical World (Chicago), and is reproduced by permission; Chapter XI. was read before The Philosophical Society of Queen's University in the autumn of 1906; the remaining three chapters, X., XIII., and XIV., were added to round out a little more the programme that the author had in mind. So much as to the origin of the book, now as to its plan and purpose. The title, though perhaps somewhat too general, indicates the spirit in which the work was undertaken. Considering the audience to which, in the first place, the lectures were to be addressed, it was thought advisable to attempt a general review of the Old Testament Problem. Book The Bible and Modern Criticism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Bible and Modern Criticism Classic Reprint written by Bettex Bettex and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible and Modern Criticism It is undeniable that the universe, including ourselves, exists. Whence comes it all? For any clear-thinking mind there are only three possibilities. Hither the universe has existed always, it produced itself, or it was created by a Divine, a Supreme Being. The Universe Not Eternal. The eternity of the universe is most clearly disproved by its evolution. From a scientific point of view that hypothesis is now discredited and virtually abandoned. Astronomers, physicists, biologists, philosophers, are beginning to recognize more and more, and men like Secchi, Dubois-Rey-mond, Lord Kelvin, Dr. Klein and others, unanimously affirm that creation has had a beginning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ and Criticism: Thoughts Concerning the Relation of Christian Faith to Biblical Criticism On the other hand, higher critics and their cham pions are scarcely less foolish when they denounce every animadversion made on their methods or their alleged results as an illicit infringement on freedom of research. Surely the right to criticise a critic's theories is as sacred as the right of the critic to propound them. The higher criticism, like all other good things is capable of abuse; and every one has a right to say when he thinks such an abuse has been committed. The special object of the following discussion is to aid in the general work of getting at the truth as regards the Bible, by setting forth how far the author ity of Jesus Christ should properly be allowed to modify, or to regulate, the process of Biblical criticism. Whatever may be thought of the result which has been reached, it should be distinctly understood that the object has been, not to oppose criticism, but to help it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Higher Criticism: An Outline of Modern Biblical Study This book has been written for the purpose of furnishing a concise and convenient answer to questions frequently asked concerning the higher criticism. Its province is not therefore to discuss and weigh, but to report the facts of the subject. Nevertheless, the careful reader will find the principles stated upon which the opponents of the critics proceed in their refutations. For our facts we have gone to the original sources, whenever they were accessible. We have not, however, referred to all the works consulted, but chose those for reference which were found most helpful, or which are easiest of access. Zockler's "Handbuch der Theo-Iogischen Wissenschaften," Vol. I, and Weiss' "Einleitung in das Neue Testament" - the former on the entire Bible, the latter in its own department - were constantly in use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Biblical Criticism Exhibiting a Systematic View of That Science In the course of reconstructing the materials they swelled out in size under the author's hands, to require two volumes - the first confined to the Old Testament, the second to the New. It is hoped that the work will be found greatly supe rior to the Lectures in every respect. It has cost him much more labour, research, and thought than the former. In every instance he has endeavoured to go back to the sources for himself; for which purpose private and public libraries have been consulted. The latest works of whose existence he was aware have been used. All available dissertations, wherever they appeared, have been attended to. Of course German works are most to the author's purpose, since they are more numerous and excellent in this department than English, French, or Dutch.
