Book Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue Long Term Health and Highway Safety

Download or read book Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue Long Term Health and Highway Safety written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are approximately 4,000 fatalities in crashes involving trucks and buses in the United States each year. Though estimates are wide-ranging, possibly 10 to 20 percent of these crashes might have involved fatigued drivers. The stresses associated with their particular jobs (irregular schedules, etc.) and the lifestyle that many truck and bus drivers lead, puts them at substantial risk for insufficient sleep and for developing short- and long-term health problems. Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue, Long-Term Health and Highway Safety assesses the state of knowledge about the relationship of such factors as hours of driving, hours on duty, and periods of rest to the fatigue experienced by truck and bus drivers while driving and the implications for the safe operation of their vehicles. This report evaluates the relationship of these factors to drivers' health over the longer term, and identifies improvements in data and research methods that can lead to better understanding in both areas.

Book excerpt: "Tragically, safety statistics show that truck and commercial bus-related fatalities are on the rise. As a result, motor carrier safety programs and enforcement activities have been under considerable scrutiny. It is my hope that much good can come from this extensive analysis and that in the long term truck and bus safety can be improved and fatalities reduced"--Page 1

This book was released on 2015-05-13 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 4,000 people are killed each year in truck crashes and nearly 100,000 are injured each year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), truck crash injuries increased by 40 percent from 2009 to 2012. There have been a lot of headlines lately; Tracy Morgan, the comedian, was seriously injured in a crash in early June involving a large truck, which also severely injured a Connecticut resident. Rule changes in 2013 were designed to prevent truck drivers from being forced to work too many hours, becoming exhausted and endangering themselves and other drivers on the road. They are a step in the right direction. As one 2005 study conducted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) demonstrated, under the old rules, 65 percent of drivers reported feeling drowsy while driving, and 48 percent admitted to falling asleep while driving at the same point during the previous year.

Book Highway Worker Safety

Download or read book Highway Worker Safety written by John A. Gambatese and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report identifies how state departments of transportation (DOTs) implement policies using highway worker safety and health data to reduce injuries and manage risk. The report is a synthesis of current proactive safety practices that will be useful for DOTs developing new or updating existing policies, programs, or tools to minimize injuries, fatalities, and risk. The study also identifies gaps in knowledge and future research needs. The information in this report was developed through a comprehensive literature review regarding the topics of worker safety and work site safety. Particular emphasis was placed on the prevalence and causality of injury and fatality incidents for highway workers, the availability of highway worker safety data, existing legal standards and policy recommendations related to highway workers, safety risk and human factors, stakeholders in highway worker safety, and safety program evaluation. The information found in the literature was supplemented with a survey of state DOTs. Six publicly available injury and fatality databases were also examined to quantify and compare injury and fatality incidence rates. The survey results reveal that each state DOT experiences its own set of issues and remains committed to improving the safety of its employees in highway work sites. There is not one set of safety programs used by all DOTs; each DOT employs the safety programs it perceives to be important, effective, and feasible to implement given resource limitations. From a nationwide perspective, sharing the research and program methods has the potential to be an economically efficient way to improve safety. Although institutional limitations may prevent some DOTs from implementing successful safety program elements found in other DOTs, understanding fellow state DOT programs can be useful in adapting the broad safety ideas to a new organizational context. Analysis of the survey responses reveals that improvements in data sharing and data availability are helpful in enabling states to make data-driven decisions for their own safety programs.

Book Managing Criminal Investigations

Download or read book Managing Criminal Investigations written by Peter B. Bloch and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prescriptive package designed to assist police managers to improve the success of their departments' criminal investigation efforts. While skilled detectives are often essential, there are a number of new methods police managers can adopt to improve investigative success. Management issues addressed include budgeting and allocating resources; improving relationships with the prosecutor; interacting with the public, especially victims and witnesses; improving relationships between investigators and patrol officers; decentralizing detective assignments, particularly in neighborhood team policing approaches; using civilian employees for investigative tasks; assigning personnel; supervising and training investigative personnel; improving investigative procedures; and conducting investigative activities not related to specific cases. The suggestions are based on an examination of the investigative practices of six selected police departments, a review of the relevant literature and recent experiments in other departments, and the observations and conclusions of a panel of experienced police officials. It is especially interesting to note that many of the ideas require little or no additional resources. This report is written primarily for police chiefs and heads of detective units, but should also be of interest to other police officials and to local government officials such as city managers.
