Book Commercial Vehicle Accident Reconstruction and Investigation

Download or read book Commercial Vehicle Accident Reconstruction and Investigation written by Rick W. Varner and published by Lawyers & Judges Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it safe to drive with these large trucks? What happens when the small car in front of the commercial vehicle slams on its brakes? Reconstructing commercial vehicle accidents is a complex task that is often misunderstood or misinterpreted. Frequently, mistakes are made in determining the vehicle's ability to brake efficiently, the engine speeds and the loading condition. This reference book identifies the proper techniques you should use in order to correctly assess a commercial vehicle accident scene. The authors of this text discuss in great detail the unique aspects of commercial vehicle operation, performance and regulations. Chapters are dedicated to the various operating systems of these vehicles such as the electrical systems, tires, steering, suspension and much more. You will also learn about the human factors in commercial vehicle operations and accidents. The drivers of these trucks must drive at 100 percent of their ability in all situations and must meet certain requirements before they are allowed behind the wheel. Even so, accidents do occur and are sometimes caused by the driver's response.New to this expanded second edition are chapters on vehicle headlamps, terminology, Automatic On-Board Recording Devices (AOBRD), wireless communications equipment, collision warning systems and smart cruise, vehicle speed sensor, and testimony questions, among others. If you are interested in reconstructing or investigating commercial vehicle accidents, or if you are already involved in this but would like a better understanding of the issues, this book will prove to be valuable tool.

Book Special Investigation Report

Download or read book Special Investigation Report written by United States. National Transportation Safety Board and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1999 and 2000, the National Transportation Safety Board investigated nine rear-end collisions in which 20 people died and 181 were injured. Common to all nine accidents was the rear following vehicle driver's degraded perception of traffic conditions ahead. As the Safety Board reported in 1995 and further discussed at its 1999 public hearing, existing technology in the form of intelligent Transportation Systems can prevent rear-end collisions. In the nine accidents investigated by the Board, one (and sometimes more) of the available technologies would have helped alert drivers to the vehicles ahead, so that they could slow their vehicles, and would have prevented or mitigated the circumstances of the collisions. The major issue addressed in this Safety Board special investigation report is the prevention of rear-end collisions through the use of Intelligent transportation systems. This report also discusses some of the challenges, including implementation, consumer acceptance, public perception, and training, associated with the deployment of vehicle-and infrastructure-based collision warning systems. As a result of its investigation, the Safety Board issues recommendations to the U.S. Department of Transportation; the Federal Highway Administration; the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration; truck, motorcoach, and automobile manufacturers; the Intelligent Transportation Society of America; the American Trucking Associations, Inc.; the Owner-Operator Independent Driver Association; and the National Private Truck Council.

Book Special Study

Download or read book Special Study written by United States. National Transportation Safety Board and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An average of 242 persons were killed each year from 1975 through 1979 in accidents while riding in the cargo areas of pickup trucks, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS). In 1979, the Safety Board investigated an accident involving a compact pickup truck in which the driver and three persons were riding in the cab and eight persons were in the open-cargo area of the truck. The driver failed to negotiate a curve and the truck ran off the road and overturned. Seven persons in the cargo area were killed. As a result of its investigation of this accident, the Safety Board recommended that the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Laws and Ordinances (NCUTLO) establish model guidelines for prohibiting passengers from riding in open cargo areas of most vehicles. The NCUTLO had considered model guidelines on a broader scale in 1975, but because of several complications, the proposal was rejected. This study was made to demonstrate further the need for model guidelines prohibiting passengers from riding in the cargo area of a vehicle, and to make available information about the dangers to passengers riding in the open cargo area of a vehicle. Recommendations are made to the NCUTLO, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association, the National Safety Council, Automobile Importers of America and to the Governors of the 50 States.
