Book The Minimum Duration Truck Driver Scheduling Problem

Download or read book The Minimum Duration Truck Driver Scheduling Problem written by Asvin Goel and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Truck driver scheduling problems are important subproblems of real-life vehicle routing and scheduling problems because rest periods required by government regulations have a significant impact on travel and arrival times. Vehicle routes generated without considering these regulations are often practically infeasible. This paper identifies common constraints imposed by hours of service regulations world wide and presents a mixed integer programming formulation for a variant of the truck driver scheduling problem in which truck drivers may only rest at customer locations and at suitable rest areas. The objective of the problem is to find a feasible truck driver schedule with minimal duration. The model presented in this paper is very flexible and can be configured to consider different sets of rules imposed by government regulations and union contracts. A dynamic programming approach is presented and its effectiveness is demonstrated for working hour regulations in the United States and in the European Union.

Book Scheduling of Driver Activities with Multiple Soft Time Windows Considering European Regulations on Rest Periods and Breaks

Download or read book Scheduling of Driver Activities with Multiple Soft Time Windows Considering European Regulations on Rest Periods and Breaks written by A. Bernhardt and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When considering long-haul transport requests, the durations of rest periods and breaks highly influence the overall time needed for fulfillment. In the European Union, Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 defines the rules for the number, duration and time intervals when rest periods and breaks have to be taken. The present study proposes two mixed integer linear programming models and optimization strategies that, together with a transformation algorithm, allow to plan driver activities in compliance with this regulation for a given sequence of customer locations and other stops to be visited. One of the models considers all rules, including extended rules, while the other takes into account the regular requirements. Each customer location has one or multiple time windows among which a choice has to be made. A special feature is the consideration of "soft" time windows which has not been studied in this context so far. If time windows cannot be met, the resulting schedule gives important information to the dispatcher that is necessary to set up a better schedule. In online re-planning, lateness can be revealed at an early stage such that it is possible to reorganize the schedule or to negotiate arrival times with customers before communication effort and costs increase and further delays or cancellations are unavoidable. In addition to the mathematical models, a myopic algorithm was developed that can only "see" the route until the next customer stop and the corresponding customer time window in advance and plans driver activities accordingly. Simple strategies were chosen to also integrate the optional rules. Test instances were derived from real data and include vehicle routes for one week. The numerical results obtained with the mathematical models and the myopic algorithm are analyzed and compared in terms of the run time, lateness and overall travel time.

Book Truck Driver Scheduling and U S Hours of Service Regulations

Download or read book Truck Driver Scheduling and U S Hours of Service Regulations written by Asvin Goel and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States of America driving and working hours of truck drivers must comply with the hours of service regulations imposed by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Generating work plans complying with these regulations for a given sequence of locations to be visited is a non-trivial task if the service time at these locations is time constrained. For a planning horizon of one week this paper presents an O( lambda^3) algorithm for problems in which each location must be visited within one of multiple time windows if the gap between these time windows is at least 10 hours. This situation occurs, for example, if, because of opening hours of docks, handling operations can only be performed weekdays between 8 hours and 22 hours. Furthermore, this paper presents a heuristic approach for scheduling driving and working hours of truck drivers for planning horizons of more than one week.

Book Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue Long Term Health and Highway Safety

Download or read book Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue Long Term Health and Highway Safety written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are approximately 4,000 fatalities in crashes involving trucks and buses in the United States each year. Though estimates are wide-ranging, possibly 10 to 20 percent of these crashes might have involved fatigued drivers. The stresses associated with their particular jobs (irregular schedules, etc.) and the lifestyle that many truck and bus drivers lead, puts them at substantial risk for insufficient sleep and for developing short- and long-term health problems. Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue, Long-Term Health and Highway Safety assesses the state of knowledge about the relationship of such factors as hours of driving, hours on duty, and periods of rest to the fatigue experienced by truck and bus drivers while driving and the implications for the safe operation of their vehicles. This report evaluates the relationship of these factors to drivers' health over the longer term, and identifies improvements in data and research methods that can lead to better understanding in both areas.
