Book Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue Long Term Health and Highway Safety

Download or read book Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue Long Term Health and Highway Safety written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are approximately 4,000 fatalities in crashes involving trucks and buses in the United States each year. Though estimates are wide-ranging, possibly 10 to 20 percent of these crashes might have involved fatigued drivers. The stresses associated with their particular jobs (irregular schedules, etc.) and the lifestyle that many truck and bus drivers lead, puts them at substantial risk for insufficient sleep and for developing short- and long-term health problems. Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue, Long-Term Health and Highway Safety assesses the state of knowledge about the relationship of such factors as hours of driving, hours on duty, and periods of rest to the fatigue experienced by truck and bus drivers while driving and the implications for the safe operation of their vehicles. This report evaluates the relationship of these factors to drivers' health over the longer term, and identifies improvements in data and research methods that can lead to better understanding in both areas.

Book Truck Driver Scheduling and U S Hours of Service Regulations

Download or read book Truck Driver Scheduling and U S Hours of Service Regulations written by Asvin Goel and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States of America driving and working hours of truck drivers must comply with the hours of service regulations imposed by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Generating work plans complying with these regulations for a given sequence of locations to be visited is a non-trivial task if the service time at these locations is time constrained. For a planning horizon of one week this paper presents an O( lambda^3) algorithm for problems in which each location must be visited within one of multiple time windows if the gap between these time windows is at least 10 hours. This situation occurs, for example, if, because of opening hours of docks, handling operations can only be performed weekdays between 8 hours and 22 hours. Furthermore, this paper presents a heuristic approach for scheduling driving and working hours of truck drivers for planning horizons of more than one week.

Book Truck Driver Scheduling in the United States

Download or read book Truck Driver Scheduling in the United States written by Asvin Goel and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Truck Driver Scheduling Problem (US-TDSP) is the problem of visiting a sequence of n locations within given time windows in such a way that driving and working activities of truck drivers comply with U.S. hours of service regulations. In the case of single time windows it is known that the US-TDSP can be solved in O(n^3) time. In this paper we present a scheduling method for the US-TDSP which solves the single time window problem in O(n^2) time. We show that in the case of multiple time windows the same complexity can be achieved if the gap between subsequent time windows is at least 10 hours. This situation occurs, for example, if, because of opening hours of docks, handling operations can only be performed between 8.00 AM and 10.00 PM. Furthermore, we empirically show that for a wide range of other problem instances the computational effort is not much higher if multiple time windows are considered.

Book Operational and Economic Impacts of the New Hours of Service

Download or read book Operational and Economic Impacts of the New Hours of Service written by Jeffrey Short and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) implemented a rule significantly changing the Hours-of-Service (HOS) rules in July 2013. The impacts of these changes on commercial truck drivers and motor carriers is assessed in this report. The report closely follows the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) June 2013 publication, "Assessing the Impacts of the 34-Hour Restart Provisions" and quantifies operational and economic impacts since the July 2013 HOS rules went into effect. Two surveys were conducted by the ATRI Research Team for its analysis; a driver survey and a motor carrier survey. ATRI also conducted an analysis of logbook data from drivers. Survey results indicated that 12.4% of drivers with prior experience using the restart had discontinued use once the new rules went into effect. Respondents indicated that benefits of the restart have diminished, particularly those related to productivity. Most respondents indicated that the two new restart provisions have impacted their operations in a moderately or significantly negative way. Results also indicated that many drivers are adjusting to the new restart rules by changing schedules, incorporating a rolling schedule into their operations, changing start/end times and turning down loads.

Book Hours of Service of Drivers Us Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulation Fmcsa 2018 Edition

Download or read book Hours of Service of Drivers Us Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulation Fmcsa 2018 Edition written by The Law The Law Library and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hours of Service of Drivers (US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulation) (FMCSA) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Hours of Service of Drivers (US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulation) (FMCSA) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 FMCSA amends the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations effective December 27 to allow commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers up to 11 hours of driving time within a 14-hour, non-extendable window from the start of the workday, following 10 consecutive hours off duty (11-hour limit). This interim rule also allows motor carriers and drivers to restart calculations of the weekly on-duty time limits after the driver has at least 34 consecutive hours off duty (34-hour restart). An IFR is necessary to prevent disruption to enforcement and compliance with the hours-of-service (HOS) rules when the stay expires, as well as possible effects on the timely delivery of essential goods and services. This IFR will ensure that a familiar and uniform set of national rules governs motor carrier transportation, while FMCSA gathers public comments on all aspects of this interim final rule, conducts peer review of our analysis, and considers the appropriate final rule that addresses the issues identified by the Court. FMCSA is fully committed to issuing a final rule in 2008. This book contains: - The complete text of the Hours of Service of Drivers (US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulation) (FMCSA) (2018 Edition) - A table of contents with the page number of each section
