Download or read book Strategy and Methodology for Radioactive Waste Characterization written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade significant progress has been achieved in the development of waste characterization and control procedures and equipment as a direct response to ever-increasing requirements for quality and reliability of information on waste characteristics. Failure in control procedures at any step can have important, adverse consequences and may result in producing waste packages which are not compliant with the waste acceptance criteria for disposal, thereby adversely impacting the repository. The information and guidance included in this publication corresponds to recent achievements and reflects the optimum approaches, thereby reducing the potential for error and enhancing the quality of the end product. -- Publisher's description.

This book was released on 2004-02-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As operational experience is gained in the disposal of transuranic waste from nuclear weapons facilities at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico, the Department of Energy (DOE) has opportunities to change how it "characterizes" waste to confirm that it is appropriate for shipment to and disposal at the underground repository. The waste shipped to the facility includes gloves, rags, tools, and other debris or dried sludge that has been contaminated by radioactive elements, including plutonium, during production or cleanup activities in the DOE weapons complex. However, before the DOE seeks regulatory approval for changes to its characterization program, the agency should conduct and publish a systematic and quantitative assessment to show that the proposed changes would not affect the protection of workers, the public, or the environment, according to the committee. The assessment should take into account technical factors, societal and regulatory impacts, and the time and effort required to make the changes.

This book was released on 2002-09-28 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) disposes of plutonium-contaminated debris from its 27 nuclear weapons facilities at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), an underground repository in Carlsbad, New Mexico. After four years of operational experience, DOE has opportunities to make changes to the costly and time-consuming process of "characterizing" the waste to confirm that it is appropriate for shipment to and disposal at WIPP.  The report says that in order to make such changes, DOE should conduct and publish a systematic and quantitative assessment to show that the proposed changes would not affect the protection of workers, the public, or the environment.

Download or read book Transportation for the Nuclear Industry written by D.G. Walton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transport requirements of the nuclear industry are unique in many respects. Thi s is not because cargoes are particularly large or hazardous by compari son wi th other industries but because standards of performance required in every aspect of the activity are so much greater than those required for any other industry. Transport of nuclear materials is subject to existing statutory regulations applied not only nationally but internationally. In addition to this, users of transport demand the highest standards of performance for their own purposes particularly in the area of quality assurance. Similar considerations also apply to the transport of non-nuclear materials where the transport link often has to tie in with project management and quality assurance requirements. Safety and security of nuclear materials are of paramount importance but even when these aspects are of a completely acceptable standard public attitudes to the transport activities have to be addressed adequately. The transport system itself consists of many components. The route, the vehicles, the containers, and the individual packages. The performance of each component determines the performance of the total system: all these factors were presented in the 1988 Conference on Transportation for the Nuclear Industry, giving a broad over-view of current practice together with wide ranging consideration of future requirements and developments.
