Book Trouble in the Triangle

Download or read book Trouble in the Triangle written by Martin Jelsma and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to international pressure to eliminate opium from the Golden Triangle, Burma has announced harsh measures for all illicit poppy production. But the enforcement of the ban on opium will directly threaten the livelihoods of some 250,000 families in Shan State that depend on the opium economy. The creation of alternative livelihoods has not kept pace with opium eradication. A humanitarian crisis looms, jeopardizing the fragile social stability in the cease-fire regions. What alternatives do these families have for their survival? An international conference was held in Amsterdam to discuss issues on international engagement with Burma through the prism of drug policy. The articles analyze the relationship between drugs and conflict in Burma and the consequences of Burma's illicit drug production for neighboring countries. The latter part of the book widens its focus to place Burma in the international context of the global drug trade, and draws parallels with Afghanistan and Colombia. The collection takes an in-depth look at the long and dramatic history of drugs, armed conflict, ethnic strife, and cease-fire agreements in Burma and presents recommendations for a humane and effective response from the international community.

Download or read book General Relativity written by Leonard Susskind and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest volume in the New York Times–bestselling physics series explains Einstein’s masterpiece: the general theory of relativity He taught us classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and special relativity. Now, physicist Leonard Susskind, assisted by a new collaborator, André Cabannes, returns to tackle Einstein’s general theory of relativity. Starting from the equivalence principle and covering the necessary mathematics of Riemannian spaces and tensor calculus, Susskind and Cabannes explain the link between gravity and geometry. They delve into black holes, establish Einstein field equations, and solve them to describe gravity waves. The authors provide vivid explanations that, to borrow a phrase from Einstein himself, are as simple as possible (but no simpler). An approachable yet rigorous introduction to one of the most important topics in physics, General Relativity is a must-read for anyone who wants a deeper knowledge of the universe’s real structure.

Book Latitude

Download or read book Latitude written by Nicholas Crane and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Told for the very first time, this is the true story of the adventure that shaped the world . . . 'A thrilling story of courage, survival and science. It's an extraordinary, visceral and vivid read' Geographical Magazine ________ Three hundred years ago no one knew the true shape of the world. It wasn't a sphere - but did it bulge at the equator or was it pointed at the poles? Until we found out no map could ever be truly accurate. So a team of scientists was sent to South America - to measure one full degree of latitude. But South America was a land of erupting volcanoes, sodden rainforests, earthquakes, deadly diseases, tropical storms and violent unrest. And the misfit scientists had an unfortunate tendency to squander funds, fight duels, stumble into mutinies or die horribly. The tale of their ten-year odyssey of exploration, discovery, flirtations with failure and ultimate triumph becomes in Nicholas Crane's hands the greatest scientific adventure story ever told. ________ 'Pace, rigour and attention to enticing detail . . . Crane has a rare knack for showing people things without them having to get out of their chair' Joe Smith, director of The Royal Geographic society

Book Free Trade in the Bermuda Triangle and Other Tales of Counterglobalization

Download or read book Free Trade in the Bermuda Triangle and Other Tales of Counterglobalization written by Brett Neilson and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An alternative approach to mapping the world offers a new way to contest capitalism and globalization. Shangri-La, the Bermuda Triangle, Transylvania, the Golden Triangle--far-flung in popular conception, these anomalous places nonetheless occupy the same mysterious zone, a mythography of unruly cartographic practices. And because this mythography becomes associated with a particular area of the earth's surface, it may well suggest an alternative means of mapping the world, dissociated from the dominant geographical paradigms of nation-state, economic region, and the global/local marketing nexus. Large-scale nonnational geographical spaces that find their genesis in popular feeling, mystery, and belief, these four sites provide Brett Neilson with the basis not only for rethinking the current global reorganization of space and time but also for questioning the dominant narrative by which globalization marks the victory of capitalism. Free Trade in the Bermuda Triangle moves between analysis of popular fantasies and engagement with on-the-ground realities, weaving together topics as diverse as airplane disasters off the U.S. Atlantic coast, the global drug trade, vampire culture in postsocialist Europe, and the search for utopia in Chinese-occupied Tibet. The study of globalization is largely a solemn affair, occupied with increasing economic polarities, environmental degradation, and global insecurity. Free Trade in the Bermuda Triangle maintains a critical focus on these sobering issues but at the same time asks how popular pleasure and enjoyment can create viable alternatives to the current global order. Neilson takes seriously the proposition that capitalism must be contested at itsown level of generality, finding provisional grounds for resistance in nonlocal transnational spaces that embody quotidian hopes, desires, and anxieties. By studying the real and imagined dimensions of these popular geographies, his book seeks resources for social betterment in the fallen mythologies of the contemporary postutopian world.

Book The F frame Moultons

Download or read book The F frame Moultons written by Tony Hadland and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2014 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My intention in the creation of the Moulton bicycle was to take the evolution of that most remarkable device a stage beyond its classical form. In other words to produce a bicycle which was more pleasing to have and to use....One of the most pleasing consequences of the Moulton bicycle epic so far has been the spontaneous growth of the Moulton Users' groups: and to meet and to ride with them gives me special pleasure." -- Dr. Alex Moulton *** The purpose of this book is twofold. It introduces the Moulton bicycle to the many people - cyclists and non-cyclists alike - who either know nothing of it or whose knowledge is limited by the virtual disappearance of this extraordinary machine from our roads; by the numerous myths circulating about it and by the cursory mention it receives in most cycling books. Additionally, the book offers to Moulton owners and devotees a further appreciation of the background history and capability of the bike. Book Model Theoretic Methods in Finite Combinatorics

Download or read book Model Theoretic Methods in Finite Combinatorics written by Martin Grohe and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011-11-28 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS-ASL Special Session on Model Theoretic Methods in Finite Combinatorics, held January 5-8, 2009, in Washington, DC. Over the last 20 years, various new connections between model theory and finite combinatorics emerged. The best known of these are in the area of 0-1 laws, but in recent years other very promising interactions between model theory and combinatorics have been developed in areas such as extremal combinatorics and graph limits, graph polynomials, homomorphism functions and related counting functions, and discrete algorithms, touching the boundaries of computer science and statistical physics. This volume highlights some of the main results, techniques, and research directions of the area. Topics covered in this volume include recent developments on 0-1 laws and their variations, counting functions defined by homomorphisms and graph polynomials and their relation to logic, recurrences and spectra, the logical complexity of graphs, algorithmic meta theorems based on logic, universal and homogeneous structures, and logical aspects of Ramsey theory.
