Book Bilingual First Language Acquisition

Download or read book Bilingual First Language Acquisition written by Annick De Houwer and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2009-02-17 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, children grow up hearing two languages from birth. This comprehensive textbook explains how children learn to understand and speak those languages. It brings together both established knowledge and the latest findings about different areas of bilingual language development. It also includes new analyses of previously published materials. The book describes how bilingually raised children learn to understand and use sounds, words and sentences in two languages. A recurrent theme is the large degree of variation between bilingual children. This variation in how children develop bilingually reflects the variation in their language learning environments. Positive attitudes from the people in bilingual children's language learning environments and their recognition that child bilingualism is not monolingualism-times-two are the main ingredients ensuring that children grow up to be happy and expert speakers of two languages.

Book Bilingualism Executive Function and Beyond

Download or read book Bilingualism Executive Function and Beyond written by Irina A. Sekerina and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-06-15 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of bilingualism has charted a dramatically new, important, and exciting course in the 21st century, benefiting from the integration in cognitive science of theoretical linguistics, psycholinguistics, and cognitive psychology (especially work on the higher-level cognitive processes often called executive function or executive control). Current research, as exemplified in this book, advances the study of the effects of bilingualism on executive function by identifying many different ways of being bilingual, exploring the multiple facets of executive function, and developing and analyzing tasks that measure executive function. The papers in this volume (21 chapters), by leading researchers in bilingualism and cognition, investigate the mechanisms underlying the effects (or lack thereof) of bilingualism on cognition in children, adults, and the elderly. They take us beyond the standard, classical, black-and-white approach to the interplay between bilingualism and cognition by presenting new methods, new findings, and new interpretations.

Book Bilingualism and Minority Languages in Europe

Download or read book Bilingualism and Minority Languages in Europe written by Maria del Carmen Parafita Couto and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection considers such issues as the cognitive, linguistic and emotional benefits of speaking two languages, the perceptions, attitudes and issues relating to identity in minority language areas, and the number of grammatical aspects amongst those who speak these minority languages. The premise of the book is based on the fact that these minority languages have, in the past, been in danger of becoming obsolete, mainly because of negative attitudes regarding the benefits of speaking languages that are considered irrelevant internationally. However, in recent times, the benefits of speaking two languages, including where one is a minority language, have been recognised in ways that were not previously understood. Perhaps because of this, alongside the introduction of legislation in some areas in Europe that has been designed to support the preservation of some of these languages, there has been a re-emergence of many minority languages throughout the continent. Questions remain whether this has led to the languages becoming more widely spoken and whether there are specific benefits that can be gained from speaking them. Exploring these questions has led to an increasing amount of research being undertaken on various aspects of bilingualism in minority language areas in Europe. The book contributes to this debate and underlines the relevance and significance of bilingualism in the specific context where European minority languages are still spoken.

Book Integrating Language and Content

Download or read book Integrating Language and Content written by Maria Dantas-Whitney and published by Classroom Practice. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definition of English language classroom is changing. When students have the opportunity to learn content and language at the same time, disciplinary boundaries overlap. Teachers are rethinking how they design courses, plan lessons, assess students, and collaborate with colleagues to support student learning and facilitate their own professional growth. In this volume, contributors describe practical examples of integrating language and content in classrooms in Italy, the Netherlands, Yemen, Turkey, Taiwan, Russia, the United States, and South Africa. Teachers help students achieve their goals--learning English for specific purposes such as advertising, fashion design, and philosophy; teaching adult learners by integrating English skills with health literacy, conflict resolution, and social justice; serving emerging bilingual students in learning grade-level academic material or valuable job skills. The book is divided into four sections that help readers navigate the sometimes chaotic intersection of language and content: Why Do Teachers Design Courses to Integrate Language and Content?; How Do Teachers Integrate Language and Content?; How Do Teachers Evaluate Language and Content Learning?; and How Do Teachers Collaborate to Integrate Language and Content?
