Book Tropical Medicine in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Tropical Medicine in the Twentieth Century written by Helen J. Power and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998. Despite the upsurge of interest in the history of tropical medicine, international public health and the provision of health care in colonial and post-colonial tropical countries, no major text discusses the history of the academic discipline in the twentieth century. In Britain, the two Schools of Tropical Medicine opened within six months of each other in the final year of the nineteenth century. They have played a pivotal role in developing tropical medicine, as an academic discipline in postgraduate medicine with an active research profile. The Schools also affected the development of health care in the tropical colonies. They trained the Medical Officers of the Colonial Medical Service and the indigenous doctors whose training failed to include infectious endemic diseases and lacked an emphasis on community health. The Schools also contributed to a body of knowledge applied by the colonial powers, international agencies and independent nation states as part of their health care programmes. Ultimately the Schools helped the developing world to establish its own priorities for health. This volume charts the history of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine from1898 to1990.

Book World Report on Child Injury Prevention

Download or read book World Report on Child Injury Prevention written by M. M. Peden and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2008 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child injuries are largely absent from child survival initiatives presently on the global agenda. Through this report, the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund and many partners have set out to elevate child injury to a priority for the global public health and development communities. It should be seen as a complement to the UN Secretary-General's study on violence against children released in late 2006 (that report addressed violence-related or intentional injuries). Both reports suggest that child injury and violence prevention programs need to be integrated into child survival and other broad strategies focused on improving the lives of children. Evidence demonstrates the dramatic successes in child injury prevention in countries which have made a concerted effort. These results make a case for increasing investments in human resources and institutional capacities. Implementing proven interventions could save more than a thousand children's lives a day.--p. vii.

Each entry includes contamination, concentration rate, mostly mean mycotoxin concentration of organs (human and animal) and country of origin of the sample. Due to the serious spoilage and health issues the presence of mycotoxins can cause, it is imperative that corresponding scientists, health institutions and the food and feed industries have a more qualified understanding of mycotoxins in living things. To this end, Natural Mycotoxin Contamination in Humans and Animals provides an excellent resource. The present book complements the series of the author’s previous books, Mycotoxins in Feedstuffs and Mycotoxins in Foodstuffs, in that it is a review of the literature to create a comprehensive reference for mycotoxin levels. As with Mycotoxins and their Metabolites in Humans and Animals, the focus remains the same, but the scope now covers natural mycotoxins only.
