This benefits human society by moderating the rate of climate change, but also causes unprecedented changes to ocean chemistry. Carbon dioxide taken up by the ocean decreases the pH of the water and leads to a suite of chemical changes collectively known as ocean acidification. The long term consequences of ocean acidification are not known, but are expected to result in changes to many ecosystems and the services they provide to society. Ocean Acidification: A National Strategy to Meet the Challenges of a Changing Ocean reviews the current state of knowledge, explores gaps in understanding, and identifies several key findings. Like climate change, ocean acidification is a growing global problem that will intensify with continued CO2 emissions and has the potential to change marine ecosystems and affect benefits to society. The federal government has taken positive initial steps by developing a national ocean acidification program, but more information is needed to fully understand and address the threat that ocean acidification may pose to marine ecosystems and the services they provide. In addition, a global observation network of chemical and biological sensors is needed to monitor changes in ocean conditions attributable to acidification.

Less is known about the capacity of OA to shift ecological interactions. In this dissertation, I examine how changes in carbonate chemistry within tidepools influence constituent members of food webs, with significance for the trophic cascades in which they are embedded. In particular, I focus on a model community within the rocky intertidal zone of the eastern Pacific Ocean that includes sea star predators, a grazing snail prey, and macroalgal basal resources. Together the findings of this dissertation suggest a potential for ocean acidification to attenuate the anti-predator behavior of intermediate consumers within food webs and influence the cascading effects imposed by predators on lower trophic levels within marine communities. Chapter one assesses the anti-predator response of a grazing snail, Tegula funebralis, to the scent of the keystone sea star predator, Pisaster ochraceus, at 16 levels of pH. In this work, I conducted laboratory experiments to quantify the full-functional flight response of Tegula under present and future tidepool conditions, assessing the propensity of this snail to enter into refuge out of the water where sea star predators tend not to follow. I found that low-pH seawater impairs the anti-predator behavior of black turban snails. I also determined that fluctuations in pH that allow snails to experience benign-pH conditions daily, typical of tidepool conditions, do not restore functional behavioral responses. The results from this chapter suggest a strong potential for low-pH seawater to alter essential behaviors that have bearing on direct and indirect components of trophic interactions. In the second chapter, I investigate how the deleterious effects of low-pH exposure on the anti-predator behavior of black turban snails, as quantified in Chapter 1, might scale up to alter ecological interactions and disrupt indirect trophic pathways. For this chapter, I conducted a mesocosm experiment using a three-level food web. By means of this model system I assessed the influence of pH on a) the foraging efficiency of a sea star predator, Leptasterias hexactis, b) the avoidance behavior of Tegula snails, and c) the accompanying consequences for the outcome of their predator-prey interaction. In addition, I determined the capacity for low pH to alter the top-down influence of predators on a lower trophic level, the macroalga, Mazzaella flaccida. Results indicate that the impaired behavior of black turban snails under low-pH conditions elevates their risk of being consumed by sea stars, and alters their foraging behavior, ultimately weakens the cascading benefits of predators on algae. In particular, while snails in ambient conditions flee predators and so spend less time grazing algae, low pH degrades the anti-predator behavior of the snails, leading them to forage on algae regardless of the presence of a sea star or not. These findings suggest that ocean acidification could weaken indirect trophic pathways and induce unexpected community-level consequences in coastal ecosystems. In the third chapter, I examine the capacity for OA to perturb relationships among species in a natural setting. I conducted a manipulative field experiment using replicate tidepools to determine how low-pH seawater modifies the direct and indirect interactions within a three-level food web that includes the keystone sea star predator, Pisaster ochraceus, the grazing snail, Tegula funebralis, and a macroalgal basal resource, Macrocystis pyrifera. I found that even under field settings, nighttime declines in tidepool pH diminished the anti-predator behavior of snails, engendering reductions in the top-down influence of predators on lower trophic levels. Snails in pools where pH was manipulated to remain at a higher level responded to predators by exiting tidepool waters and decreasing their foraging on algae. In contrast, in natural and low-pH manipulated pools, snails behaved as if sea stars were not present when they were, and consumed an equal amount of algae as in pools without a predator. These results suggest that tidepool- inhabiting snails might currently be living near their behavioral-pH thresholds and that ecological consequences of exposure to natural low-pH conditions could be exacerbated in a future ocean.

While there are numerous studies that have investigated the response of individual marine organisms to climate change, few studies have focused on differences in organismal responses across trophic levels. Such trophic differences in response to climate change may disrupt ecological interactions and thereby threaten marine ecosystem function. In addition, predation is known as a strong driver that impacts individuals and populations. Despite this, we still do not have a comprehensive understanding of how different trophic levels respond to climate change stressors, predation and their combined effects in marine ecosystems. The main focus of this thesis is to identify whether marine trophic levels respond differently to climatic stressors and predation. To explore these questions, I have used a combination of traditional mesocosm experiments, together with a statistical method called meta-analysis. I initiated the research by study the responses of marine gastropods at two trophic levels to ocean acidification and predation using long-term mesocosm experiments together with a gastropod-specific meta-analyses. I focused on the amount of phenotypic plasticity in morphological traits of snails when exposed to the two stressors. In order to generalise and test these assumptions among a greater number of marine taxa, I used the meta-analysis approach to investigate the effects of ocean acidification and warming, as well as their combined effects on four marine trophic levels. Finally, to study the individual and combined effects of ocean acidification and predation with respect to inducible defences, I again applied a mesocosm experiment and used blue mussels as a model species. By using long-term mesocosm experiments and the gastropod-specific meta-analysis on marine gastropods from two trophic levels, I showed that these trophic levels varied in their responses to both ocean acidification and predation. Gastropods at lower trophic levels exhibited greater phenotypic plasticity against predation, while those from higher trophic levels showed stronger tolerance to ocean acidification. Next, by using a meta-analysis, including a large number of species and taxa, examining the effects of ocean acidification and warming, I revealed that top-predators and primary producers were most tolerant to ocean acidification compared to other trophic levels. Herbivores on the other hand, were the most vulnerable trophic level against abiotic stress. Again, using the meta-analysis approach, but this time incorporating only factorial experimental data that included the interactive effects of ocean acidification and ocean warming, I showed that higher trophic levels again were the most tolerant trophic level, and herbivores being most sensitive, with respect to the combined effect of the two stressors. Contrary to previous discussions in the literature concerning multiple climate-related stressors, antagonistic and additive effects occurred most frequently, while synergistic effects were less common and which decreased with increasing trophic rank. Finally, by conducting a fully-factorial experiment using blue mussels, I found that mussels with previous experience contact with predator has developed greater inducible defences than ones without previous experience. However, levels of ocean acidification may mask predator cues, or obstruct shell material, and consequently disrupt blue mussels inducible defence from crab predation. In summary, marine trophic levels respond differently to both biotic and climatic stressors. Higher trophic levels, together with primary producers, were often more robust against abiotic stress and may therefore be better prepared for future oceans compare species from lower trophic levels. These results may provide vital information for: implementing effective climate change mitigation, to understand which stressors to act on, and when and where to intervene for prioritizing conservation actions.

It offers new and updated scientific findings in regional climate research for the Baltic Sea basin. These include climate changes since the last glaciation (approx. 12,000 years ago), changes in the recent past (the last 200 years), climate projections up until 2100 using state-of-the-art regional climate models and an assessment of climate-change impacts on terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems. There are dedicated new chapters on sea-level rise, coastal erosion and impacts on urban areas. A new set of chapters deals with possible causes of regional climate change along with the global effects of increased greenhouse gas concentrations, namely atmospheric aerosols and land-cover change. The evidence collected and presented in this book shows that the regional climate has already started to change and this is expected to continue. Projections of potential future climates show that the region will probably become considerably warmer and wetter in some parts, but dryer in others. Terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems have already shown adjustments to increased temperatures and are expected to undergo further changes in the near future. The BACC II Author Team consists of 141 scientists from 12 countries, covering various disciplines related to climate research and related impacts. BACC II is a project of the Baltic Earth research network and contributes to the World Climate Research Programme.

Book excerpt: The world's ocean has already experienced a 30% rise in acidity since the industrial revolution, with acidity expected to rise 100 to 150% over preindustrial levels by the end of this century. Potential consequences to marine life and also to economic activities that depend on a healthy marine ecosystem are difficult to assess and predict, but potentially devastating. To address this knowledge gap, Congress passed the Federal Ocean Acidification Research and Monitoring (FOARAM) Act in 2009, which, among other things, required that an interagency working group create a "Strategic Plan for Federal Research and Monitoring of Ocean Acidification." Review of the Federal Ocean Acidification Research and Monitoring Plan reviews the strategic plan on the basis of how well it fulfills program elements laid out in the FOARAM Act and follows the advice provided to the working group in the NRC's 2010 report, Ocean Acidification: A National Strategy to Meet the Challenges of a Changing Ocean. This report concludes that, overall, the plan is strong and provides a comprehensive framework for improving our understanding of ocean acidification. Potential improvements include a better defined strategy for implementing program goals, stronger integration of the seven broad scientific themes laid out in the FOARAM Act, and better mechanisms for coordination among federal agencies and with other U.S. and international efforts to address ocean acidification.
