Book excerpt: This “gripping” New York Times bestseller from the host of CNN podcast Behind the Desk tells the true story—and backstage drama—of late-night comedy (Los Angeles Times). When beloved host Johnny Carson announced his retirement after thirty years on The Tonight Show, millions of Americans mourned. But inside the television industry, the news ignited a battle between two amazing talents—Jay Leno and David Letterman—who both yearned to occupy the departing legend’s chair. For NBC, it would be a decision with millions of dollars at stake. Soon these two comedians with strikingly different styles, who had once shared a friendship as they worked the clubs together, would be engaged in a fierce competition for the prize. Based on in-depth reporting and interviews with those involved, and updated with a new introduction by the author—a producer of CNN series The Story of Late Night—The Late Shift is a “vivid, behind-the-scenes, blow-by-blow account” of the fight that ensued, as stars, agents, and executives maneuvered for control of the most profitable program in TV history (Chicago Tribune). “Remarkably gripping . . . Takes us deep into the bizarre high-stakes world of broadcasting . . . A powerful story, and ultimately a sad one, filled with casualties as well as winners.” —The New York Times Book Review “Solid reporting, based on extensive interviews with the principals, lifts The Late Shift into a class of its own. . . . The insights into the people involved are what make [the book] a page-turner.” —Orange Country Register

Book The Stolen Dream

Download or read book The Stolen Dream written by John Devaney and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines a period when football underwent a seismic and ineradicable change brought about by the determination of the Victorian Football League to wrest control of the game's development and destiny from the various state controlling bodies and the Australian Football Council. Whereas the VFL had initially been the first among equals, it gradually assumed the role of the sole and undisputed guardian of the code. The AFC, once football's ostensible national controlling body, became an irrelevance. Instead of a national sport with a national remit we ended up with an expanded VFL with a majority of Victorian member clubs supplemented by a token sprinkling of teams from interstate. Such teams were in most cases created from scratch and could in no way be said to derive directly from the states? unique and distinctive football traditions and culture. For some, it was a brave new world, but evolution does not inevitably entail improvement.

Book The Turtle and the Dreamboat

Download or read book The Turtle and the Dreamboat written by Leeke Jim Leeke and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2022-06 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Turtle' and the 'Dreamboat' is the first detailed account of the race for long-distance flight records between the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy less than fourteen months after World War II. The flights were risky and unprecedented. Each service intended to demonstrate its offensive capabilities during the dawning nuclear age, a time when America was realigning its military structure and preparing to create a new armed service--the United States Air Force. The first week of October 1946 saw the conclusion of both record-breaking, nonstop flights by the military fliers. The first aircraft, a two-engine U.S. Navy P2V Neptune patrol plane nicknamed the Truculent Turtle, flew more than eleven thousand miles from Perth, Western Australia, to Columbus, Ohio. The Turtle carried four war-honed pilots and a young kangaroo as a passenger. The second plane, a four-engine U.S. Army B-29 Superfortress bomber dubbed the Pacusan Dreamboat, flew nearly ten thousand miles from Honolulu to Cairo via the Arctic. Although presented as a friendly rivalry, the two flights were anything but collegial. These military missions were meant to capture public opinion and establish aviation leadership within the coming Department of Defense. Both audacious flights above oceans, deserts, mountains, and icecaps helped to shape the future of worldwide commercial aviation, greatly reducing the length and costs of international routes. Jim Leeke provides an account of the remarkable and record-breaking flights that forever changed aviation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: STRONGA humorous, soul-searching account of an aging hippie who gives up his hard-won career, family, and home life to bike around the world in search of new experiences At age 45 Robbie Marshall had it all, or so it seemed. He had been married, had two children, and built up a successful advertising agency. So what on earth made him trade his suit for leathers, his office for the saddle of a great motorcycle, and his bulging appointment book for an out-of-date world atlas? The prospect of a new challenge held such overwhelming appeal that he was prepared to risk it all—his hard won career, the trappings of wealth, and the love of a good woman—for life on the road and a lifestyle completely removed from anything he had known before. And so he shook hands with his business partner, kissed his girlfriend goodbye, and rode off into the unknown. Over the course of this double or nothing adventure he came face to face with his own ignorance, enormous danger, and wracking loneliness as well as some of the best that human nature has to offer.
