Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich” (Revelation 3:18). Jesus calls us to a great quest for spiritual riches, specifically, “gold tried in the fire”—faith in God and knowledge of God refined and proven in challenging, intense life-tests. We “buy” it by trusting and obeying God’s Word and Spirit in our trials of faith and patience. Gold Tried in The Fire offers proven biblical gold ready for purchase in these trying times. The more we buy, the richer we become—not in precious metals, but precious faith and knowledge of God; not in time only, but also eternity. Like earthly gold, spiritual gold is priceless, enduring, fireproof—enduring even the hottest tests. Our destiny is to not only buy but also become “gold tried in the fire.” As we overcome, we grow increasingly golden: priceless to God, enduring, fireproof! In our hottest crucibles, we confess with Job, “When he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold” (Job 23:10, NLT).

Book James 1 2 Peter 1 3 John Jude

Download or read book James 1 2 Peter 1 3 John Jude written by Gerald L. Bray and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity Today Award of Merit winner Because the Catholic Epistles focus on orthodox faith and morals, the Fathers drew on them as a means of defense against the rising challenge of heretics. Many of the Fathers saw in these letters anticipatory attacks on Marcion and strong defenses against the Arians. They did so quite naturally because in their view truth was eternal and deviations from it had existed from the beginning. Above all, the Fathers found in the Catholic Epistles a manual for spiritual warfare, counsel for the faithful in the cosmic struggle between good and evil. In them was sound instruction in the ways of self-sacrifice, generosity, and humility, through which the cosmic forces could be defeated. Allusions to these letters go back as far as Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, and Tertullian, but the first commentary derives from Clement of Alexandria. Didymus the Blind was the next significant Greek-speaking commentator, though his commentary is fully extant only in Latin translation. Many of the comments from the early centuries have been passed on to us through Latin catenae, or chain commentaries, in which a later commentator collected comments from a variety of sources and chained them together in a fashion much like that of the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture in English. Among Latin commentators on these letters, pride of place must be given to Bede the Venerable. This volume opens up a treasure house of ancient wisdom that allows these faithful witnesses, some appearing here in English translation for the first time, to speak with eloquence and intellectual acumen to the church today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing, Job-like story of how an existence filled with loss, suffering, questioning, and anger became a life filled with shocking and incomprehensible peace and joy. Vaneetha Risner contracted polio as an infant, was misdiagnosed, and lived with widespread paralysis. She lived in and out of the hospital for ten years and, after each stay, would return to a life filled with bullying. When she became a Christian, though, she thought things would get easier, and they did: carefree college days, a dream job in Boston, and an MBA from Stanford where she met and married a classmate. But life unraveled. Again. She had four miscarriages. Her son died because of a doctor's mistake. And Vaneetha was diagnosed with post-polio syndrome, meaning she would likely become a quadriplegic. And then her husband betrayed her and moved out, leaving her to raise two adolescent daughters alone. This was not the abundant life she thought God had promised her. But, as Vaneetha discovered, everything she experienced was designed to draw her closer to Christ as she discovered "that intimacy with God in suffering can be breathtakingly beautiful."

Book excerpt: ARE YOU DISAPPOINTED THAT LIFE ISN’T TURNING OUT LIKE YOU PLANNED? HOW DO YOU RESPOND when your husband or wife tramples your emotions? When your boss fires you unexpectedly? When you lose your life’s savings? When the child you’ve loved and prayed for turns his back on you and your values? When disappointments like these smash their way into your life, you may want to scream, “How could God let this happen?” BUT WHAT IF GOD didn’t just “let it happen”? What if the things you call disappointments are really His appointments — events He is using to make you more like Christ? What if He is using your disappointments like flames to melt and burn away the undesirable elements in your life, leaving you pure and radiant — like refined silver? YOU CAN BE DEFEATED by life’s unavoidable disappointments, or you can become stronger because of them. Kay Arthur paints a graphic picture of the dangerous downward spiral of disappointment that can lead to discouragement, depression, or even despair. But you can learn to break that cycle and embrace disappointment with a faith that recognizes the trials of life as tools that God uses to make you — as silver refined — a reflection of His goodness.

Book excerpt: I pray that your soul is blessed by reading this book. This book means a lot to me, because it was written during a time in my life where I had to live by faith in every area. My total dependency on God taught me how to deal with situations beyond my control. God's love reassured me that things weren't as bad as they sometimes appear to be and all that I needed to do was trust him. My call was to understand love and its place in whatever situation revealed. As I began to write this book, I found myself answering questions to problems that I was seeking God for. This is why it was my desire to make sure this book was not too long in length, so that my readers would want to read it over and over again without hesitation in order to obtain the knowledge needed for their own personal fulfillment. I followed Jesus Christ and grew to love Him even more, myself and others. God has anointed this book. If you take heed to every word written therein, blessings will overshadow you in a mighty way. Take time out to learn more about love. Know that you are love and was created to share love with others. Rebuild your broken relationships. Discover new ways to express yourself. We all go through the trials of life where our love is tried. It can be love from our spouse, parent/child relationships, friends or acquaintances. When we are tried, there's a lot that we discover about ourselves, even the hidden masks, where we need deliverance and forgiveness. You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Know how to encourage a friend and help her navigate hard realities with real help from God's truth.
