Book Tricksters and Estates

Download or read book Tricksters and Estates written by J. Douglas Canfield and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the Renaissance was the Golden Age of English comedy, the Restoration was the Silver. These comedies are full of tricksters attempting to gain estates, the emblem and the reality of power in late feudal England. The tricksters appear in a number of guises, such as heroines landing their men, younger brothers seeking estates, or Cavaliers threatened with dispossession. The hybrid nature of these plays has long posed problems for critics, and few studies have attempted to deal with their diversity in a comprehensive way. Now one of the leading scholars of Restoration drama offers a cultural history of the period's comedy that puts the plays in perspective and reveals the ideological function they performed in England during the latter half of the seventeenth century. To explain this function, J. Douglas Canfield groups the plays into three categories: social comedy, which underwrites Stuart ideology; subversive comedy, which undercuts it; and comical satire, which challenges it as fundamentally immoral or amoral. Through play-by-play analysis, he demonstrates how most of the comedies support the ideology of the Stuart monarchs and the aristocracy, upholding what they regarded as their natural right to rule because of an innate superiority over all other classes. A significant minority of comedies, however, reveal cracks in class solidarity, portray witty heroines who inhabit the margins of society, or give voice to folk tricksters who embody a democratic force nearly capable of overwhelming class hierarchy. A smaller yet but still significant minority end in no resolution, no restoration, but, at their most radical, playfully portray Stuart ideology as empty rhetoric. Tricksters and Estates is a truly comprehensive work, offering serious critical readings of many plays that have never before received close attention and fresh insights into more familiar works. By juxtaposing the comedies of such lesser-known playwrights as Orrery, Lacy, and Rawlins with those of more familiar figures like Behn, Wycherley, and Dryden, the author invites a greater appreciation than has previously been possible of the meaning and function of Restoration comedy. This intelligent and wide-ranging study promises is a standard work in its field.

Book Animal Attraction 4 Story Collection

Download or read book Animal Attraction 4 Story Collection written by Kameron Claire and published by Snuggle Whore Press, LLC. This book was released on 2021-07-08 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four-legged hijinks aside, they help our heroes find happily ever-after... This is a collection of previously released steamy, short contemporary romance, complete with instalove and a guaranteed happily ever-after. If you're looking for a great lunchtime read, or something to spark sexy dreams before bed, you’ll want to pick this one up. Lucky Dog Jericho: I’m used to people giving me and my dog wide berth, considering nothing about our appearance is unnerving. We’re both big, strong, and give the impression we’re looking for trouble, even when we’re not. So, when a gorgeous redhead baby-talks the beast between my legs—the Rottweiler—of course, I’m intrigued. Callie: I love dogs and know some of the biggest and toughest looking are really snuggly teddy bears. But when I get a look at the guy, this beautiful Rottweiler is walking—yes, she’s walking him—I wonder if the master is as snuggly as his four-legged fur baby. Frisky Kitty Gideon: I just got my butt kicked by a seven-pound alley cat. I’m bleeding and holding claws of fury hostage in a tablecloth while we wait for the vet—a woman who takes my breath away when she enters the room. I’m thinking the bloody scratches are worth the “doctoring” I’m hoping she’ll give me. Stephanie: I’ve seen a lot come through my office, but when a battle worn beefcake takes my direction and gently nurses the newborn kittens of the feral cat who just kicked his butt, I wonder if he would be as gentle with me? Puppy Love Kirian: It’s been three weeks since my new neighbor moved into the adjoining duplex. Three weeks of hearing a woman I’ve yet to see conjure up fantasies with her phone sex job, and of a howling demon dog who makes noise morning, noon, and night. I’m ready to give her a piece of my mind, except she isn’t what I expect, and one look at her spilling out of her tank top erases all of my complaints except one—if she’s going to cause me to lose sleep, I have a much better idea on how to we can do that. Jamie: I’m a PTSD counselor—not a sex phone operator as my neighbor accuses—and I’d be a lot more pissed off if he wasn’t standing there, near naked, in the form of some mythical Nordic god. And the fact that my puppy has sided with him isn’t helping me stomp away in a huff, either. Should I trust my puppy’s instincts and give this guy a second chance at a first impression? Rescue Me Dorian: I’ve wanted to adopt a dog for the last year, but I believe a dog—much like a girlfriend—should come into my life naturally, not via an app designed like a dating service. So, you can imagine my surprise when I meet the woman of my dreams who not only fosters the dog I want to rescue, but wrote the date like ads. Can I convince her to rescue me like she’s rescued the adorable fur kids that brought us together?* Cersei: I’m a romance author as well as a foster mom, so my adoption ads get some inappropriate inquiries that have nothing to do with the dogs, but I can’t ignore the response from the hot guy with the sparkly blue eyes who seems like the perfect adopter. After we meet I’m wondering if he’s also perfect for me, and if he could be the guy to give this romance author her happily ever-after?

The arrow turns out to be one of Cork's, and he becomes the primary suspect in the murder. He understands full well that he's been set up. As he works to clear his name and track the real killer, he remembers his long, complex relationship with the tough kid who would grow up to become a professional football player, a populist politician, and the lover of the first woman to whom Cork ever gave his heart. Book Tricksters and Pranksters

Download or read book Tricksters and Pranksters written by Alison Williams and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a contribution to comparative scholarship in Medieval and Renaissance studies in its investigation of the ingenious diversity of roguish practices found in Medieval and Renaissance literature and its recognition of the coherent normative function of tales of tricksters and pranksters. The wide variety of works analysed, from those forming part of the established canon of texts on undergraduate degree schemes to lesser-known works, makes the volume of interest to students and researchers alike. The roguish behaviour of women, priests, foxes and outlaws and the knavery of Eulenspiegel and Panurge are used to illustrate how rituals of inversion and humiliation typical of the medieval carnival are reflected in literary accounts of trickery, and to question whether the restorative function attributed to carnival celebration is equally to be found in the intra-textual and extra-textual outcomes of trickery. This analysis is supported by studies into the trickster in mythology, sociological investigations into the role of disorder, Bakhtinian theories of carnival and the carnivalesque, and theories of black humour.

Book Troubling Tricksters

Download or read book Troubling Tricksters written by Deanna Reder and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2010-02-10 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Troubling Tricksters is a collection of theoretical essays, creative pieces, and critical ruminations that provides a re-visioning of trickster criticism in light of recent backlash against it. The complaints of some Indigenous writers, the critique from Indigenous nationalist critics, and the changing of academic fashion have resulted in few new studies on the trickster. For example, The Cambridge Companion to Native American Literature (2005), includes only a brief mention of the trickster, with skeptical commentary. And, in 2007, Anishinaabe scholar Niigonwedom Sinclair (a contributor to this volume) called for a moratorium on studies of the trickster irrelevant to the specific experiences and interests of Indigenous nations. One of the objectives of this anthology is, then, to encourage scholarship that is mindful of the critic’s responsibility to communities, and to focus discussions on incarnations of tricksters in their particular national contexts. The contribution of Troubling Tricksters, therefore, is twofold: to offer a timely counterbalance to this growing critical lacuna, and to propose new approaches to trickster studies, approaches that have been clearly influenced by the nationalists’ call for cultural and historical specificity.

Book excerpt: The Trickster Revisited: Deception as a Motif in the Pentateuch explores the use of deception in the Pentateuch and uncovers a new understanding of the trickster's function in the Hebrew Bible. While traditional readings often «whitewash» the biblical characters, exonerating them of any wrongdoing, modern scholars often explain these tales as significant at some earlier point in Israelite tradition. But this study asks the question: what role does the trickster have in the later pentateuchal setting? Considering the work of Victor Turner and the mythic function of the trickster, The Trickster Revisited explores the connections between tricksters, the rite de passage pattern, marginalization, and liminality. Marginalized individuals and communities often find trickster tales significant, therefore trickster stories often follow a similar literary pattern. After tracing this pattern throughout the Pentateuch, specifically the patriarchal narratives and Moses' interaction with Pharaoh in the Exodus, the book discusses the meaning these stories had for the canonizers of the Pentateuch. The author argues that in the Exile and post-exilic period, as the canon was forming, the trickster was the perfect manifestation of Israel's self-perception. The cognitive dissonance of prophetic words of hope and grandeur, in light of a meager socio-economic and political reality, caused the nation to identify itself as the trickster. In this way, Israel could explain its lowly state as a temporary (but still significant) «betwixt and between», on the threshold of a rise in status, i.e. the great imminent kingdom predicted by the prophets.
