Book Progressive Justice in an Age of Repression

Download or read book Progressive Justice in an Age of Repression written by Walter S. DeKeseredy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progressive Justice in an Age of Repression provides a much-needed engagement with questions of justice and reform within the current phase of global capitalism, one that is marked not only by significant social inequality, but also political bifurcation. It offers guidance on progressive strategies for resistance. It also extends criminological analysis by situating these contemporary challenges as globalized and inextricably linked to questions of political economy, law, and society. Bringing together an international selection of scholars, this book draws on a range of issues, such as immigration, street crime and the renewed push for "law and order," violence against women, environmental injustice, assaults on health care and social services, and the unleashing of private corporate exploitation of natural resources. It is a clarion for strategic thinking, a call for action fuelled by informed analysis, and a reimagining of the progressive society that is under attack by Trumpism, populism, and a rising right. This is an important read for those who teach and study criminology, deviance and social control, social problems, legal studies, political science, and policy studies. It is also a useful resource for practitioners, community-based activists, and policy makers seeking new ways of thinking critically about crime, law, and social control.

Book Contemporary Critical Criminology

Download or read book Contemporary Critical Criminology written by Walter S. DeKeseredy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-22 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of critical criminology – that crime and the present-day processes of criminalization are rooted in the core structures of society – is of more relevance today than it has been at any other time. Written by an internationally renowned scholar, Contemporary Critical Criminology introduces the most up-to-date empirical, theoretical, and political contributions made by critical criminologists around the world. In its exploration of this material, the book also challenges the erroneous but widely held notion that the critical criminological project is restricted to mechanically applying theories to substantive topics, or to simply calling for radical political, economic, cultural, and social transformations. Now fully updated and expanded in a new edition, this book offers further coverage of new directions in critical criminology, covering topics such as: Green criminology Indigenous criminology Intersectionality Narrative criminology Rural critical criminology Queer criminology Zemiology Critical research methods Contemporary critical criminological policies Written in a clear and direct style, this book is an essential source of reference for both undergraduate and postgraduate students of criminology, deviance and social control, criminological theory, social policy, research methodology, and criminal justice.

Book My Trickle Down Childhood

Download or read book My Trickle Down Childhood written by Mary Davenport and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes life takes its time bringing something of value into plain sight. It took me twenty-nine years to bring this book to a place where I can present it to you with both pride and satisfaction. I am hoping the story Ive shared is one you will find as valuable in your life as it was in mine. The only problem is that my story took its time in me so I could make the necessary changes needed in order for me to find a balance of meaning and peace. This book is a mystery in the way it presents my life to you. Ive been able to use a sense of seriousness mixed with a bizarre sense of comedy. Nothing in this book is what you might expect. About the time you begin to feel sorrowful, I hit you with a note that tells you there is no sorrow in me about what happened, only a sense of victory that Ive been able to make sense of a life that is still unknown to my conscious mind. Ive taken a shovel and dug deeply into my past then explained how I handled myself, both as a child and as the woman I have become. Ive worked to expose the workings of how hard the mind works in order to survive in the healthiest way possible. Ive used every tool at my disposal to retrain my thoughts, behavior, and language in order to break apart habits I developed in order to remain alive. My book is generally the type written by psychiatrists, psychologists, or counselors about patients. In this book, I became my own therapist, being led only by the insight given to me in a yet mysterious and unknown way.

Download or read book Under Siege written by Walter S. DeKeseredy and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the relationship between poverty, social marginalization and crime in six public housing communities in "West Town" (in Ottawa, Ontario). Due to high levels of poverty, joblessness, low collective efficacy, and other social problems, the communities were for the most part unhappy places and this was compounded by the amount of crime. Based on interviews and responses to the Quality of Neighborhood Life Survey (QNLS), the study showed that the residents were exposed to levels of risk -- poverty, social disadvantage, disorder and fear -- greater than those in the broader society. The incidence of crime was also high, with 55% of respondents being victimized by predatory crime, wide-spread public racial and sexual harassment, and a disproportionate number of females experiencing intimate partner and stranger violence in public settings. The last chapter focuses on possible government responses, including economic approaches (higher minimum wages, reducing unemployment), and social interventions (provision of day care, refurbishing of public housing, improved public transportation, and education).

Book excerpt: 'This important work identifies the critical elements of sustainability--the necessary goal of systemic reform--which requires a long-term commitment to change for the benefit of students' - Lois Adams-Rogers, Deputy Executive Director, Council of Chief State School Officers The recent emphasis on educational reform has lead to many books on initiating school improvement, but relatively few on how to sustain reform efforts so that improvements have a lasting impact. Changing for Good offers a detailed examination of current schoolwide reform efforts and identifies strategies for introducing, managing, and sustaining successful school renewal programs. Based on a six-year study of 74 schools, the book provides a model for generating the necessary district support, schoolwide leadership, teacher commitment, and performance outcomes to cultivate improvement that lasts. Applicable at all levels, this model helps readers: - Align reform efforts with educational standards and accountability guidelines - Create a research-based improvement plan - Support change by developing a shared vision - Promote distributed leadership - Celebrate gains to encourage cooperation The most beneficial school improvements are the ones that endure. With this exceptional resource, educational administrators and leaders can create a school environment that embraces meaningful change, sustains positive reform, and ensures successful learning outcomes.

Book Who I Killed at Camp Last Summer

Download or read book Who I Killed at Camp Last Summer written by Thomas Kaminski and published by Black Bed Sheet Books. This book was released on 2024-04-21 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who I Killed at Camp Last Summer takes a first-person approach to the slasher genre, entirely from the killer’s perspective. It centers on a pair of horror-fanatic siblings, Ashley and Alex Byer, who attend a two-week summer camp with their school. The outlook of their adventure turns grim, however, when campers start dying in supposed accidents. The deaths are reminiscent of a previous camp, which got decimated by another killer some twenty years before. Soon many campers die, and no one is safe, as an old evil seems to have returned. This unique tale plays with the typical horror summer camp tropes and uses them in new and fun ways, while also touching on difficult human issues such as depression, identity, and the struggle of belonging, in a way no reader will ever forget.

Book Trickling Down Or Fizzling Out

Download or read book Trickling Down Or Fizzling Out written by Myles Zyblock and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this paper are to determine the empirical relationships between economic performance, transfers and low income among Canadian families, and to explore whether these relationships have changed over time. Similar recent studies in the US find a weakening in the relationship between economic growth and low income reduction over the past 25 years. Using data from the Survey of Consumer Finances of Statistics Canada, we find that there is a statistically significant negative relationship between economic performance and the incidence of low income among families in Canada for the period from 1973 to 1995. Government transfers are also found to lift families above the low income threshold. These results are robust across different family types and for three different measures of low income. We also find a weakening in the relationship between improved economic performance and low income reduction for most family types between 1973 and 1995, and for all family types after 1980. This weakening is associated with rising pre-transfer income inequality among families. Increasing inequality has also reduced the negative impact of transfers on low income rates.
