Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heroes: A Tribute celebrates the lives and contributions of 49 brilliant, creative figures who were early victims of HIV/AIDS—unique portraits by artist Doug Meyer reflect the core of each individual and are paired with insightful obituaries. In Heroes: A Tribute artist Doug Meyer celebrates the lives and accomplishments of creative pioneers who were victims of HIV/AIDS in the early years of the epidemic. Brilliant figures from the worlds of art, design, film, and dance are honored here—people such as Robert Mapplethorpe, Keith Haring, Rudolph Nureyev, Freddie Mercury, Rock Hudson, John Duka, Tina Chow, Klaus Nomi, Halston, and Angelo Donghia. The Art Editions of Heroes are stamped, signed, and numbered by Doug Meyer and include a print of the 49th hero. The Blue Art Edition includes a blue version of the print in the back of each copy. Heroes began as an installation at a Design Industry Foundation to Fight AIDS event and grew into a traveling exhibition. The portraits vary in form, material, and style, and incorporate drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography. In his multi-dimensional artwork, Meyer blends techniques and media, such as terracotta, églomisé, papier-mâché, and computer-generated collage. The text includes essays by Meyer and writer Beth Dunlop as well as brief biographies of each hero that highlight the contributions these figures made to the worlds of art, design, and culture. This beautifully designed book features sophisticated graphic design and includes pages from Doug Meyer’s sketchbooks showing his artistic process. A true celebration, Heroes: A Tribute both pays homage to these visionary creatives who died too soon, and it teaches younger generations about these important figures. This book will appeal to all who have an interest in art, design, fashion, creativity, gay and LGBTQ issues and history, and more.

Book excerpt: It’s been over thirty years since Mike Krzyzewski became the head basketball coach at Duke University. And on November 15, 2011, Coach K became the most successful coach in NCAA Division I men’s basketball history with his 903rd victory. Now the impact and inspiration of this living legend is captured in this newly revised edition of True Blue. In this one-of-a-kind volume, Dick “Hoops” Weiss brings together over twenty of the friends, colleagues, and players who know Coach K best. From the reminiscences of Tom Butters, the A.D. who hired him, to the analysis of ESPN legend Dick Vitale, who covers the ACC on a regular basis, this book provides unparalleled, intimate insights into the Krzyzewski era at Duke. Players like Johnny Dawkins, Danny Ferry, Christian Laettner, Grant Hill, Shane Battier, and more all recall how they were recruited, played for The Captain, and emerged from their years at Duke as men prepared to take their places in the world. True Blue isn’t just a chronology of wins and losses. It is a portrait of a complex man who conceived and executed a simple plan: to make Duke basketball and himself the best they can be.

Book The Complete History of Peanuts on Parade A Tribute to Charles M Schulz

Download or read book The Complete History of Peanuts on Parade A Tribute to Charles M Schulz written by William Johnson and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-01-11 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PEANUTS On Parade was the biggest tribute to PEANUTS creator, Charles Schulz, as it spanned over nine years in two states with over eight hundred statues of PEANUTS characters. Hosted by St. Paul, MN (2000–04) and Santa Rosa, CA (2005–07, '10), over five million fans from all fifty states and over sixty different countries searched for nearly eight hundred unique and individually designed five-foot statues of the Peanuts gang; each year featuring a different character. Go behind the scenes from the first discussions in the Mayor's office in 2000 to the final statues of 2010. Every step of PEANUTS on Parade is contained in these books. It all began as a modest tribute in St. Paul, MN as they wanted to honor one of their hometown heroes and was only slated to run for a single year. But the public demand was so overwhelming, it continued to run for another four years. After that, the tribute moved to Santa Rosa, California, home of the Charles Schulz Museum, where it ran for another three continuous years through 2007 plus an "encore" year in 2010. Each year wrapped up with an auction in which several statues went up for bids, each selling for thousands of dollars. The money raised paid for permanent bronze statues in both St. Paul and Santa Rosa, and began an art scholarship program in Schulz name which is still active today. Volume Two continues the Charles Schulz tribute after relocating to Santa Rosa. Charlie Brown, Woodstock, and Snoopy as Joe Cool were each highlighted in consecutive years in the city Charles Schulz called home for almost half of his life. This collection contains photos of every statue, an explanation behind each piece of art, and the history of the project itself; all straight from hundreds of artists, sponsors, organizers, and celebrities. Slide in additional research from the author, auction results, current location of dozens of statues, collectables, and trivia, and you have the complete history of Peanuts on Parade.
