Book Using Emerging Technologies to Inform Catchment wide Analysis of Geomorphic River Change and Sensitivity of the Waip River Waikato New Zealand

This book was released on 2019 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although geomorphic sensitivity is an important part of river science and management, few efforts have been made to consistently analyse the capacity for geomorphic adjustment at the catchment scale. Emerging technologies and remote sensing techniques are transforming our capacity to measure, monitor and interpret river change. This study uses a combination of theoretical frameworks and emerging techniques to examine cross-scalar channel adjustment and river sensitivity. In New Zealand’s Waikato region, the Waipā catchment has been transformed from a landscape dominated by native forest and wetlands to a landscape characterized by intensified agriculture. Anthropogenic activities have significantly modified channels and altered channel adjustment. A strong geologic imprint of volcanic material, karst landscapes and alluvial fan deposits also moderates contemporary geomorphic adjustment. This thesis examines catchment-scale capacity for adjustment and potential sensitivity using the River Styles Framework for 4th order channels and above within the five largest sub-catchments of the Waipā. Potential sensitivity rankings at the reach-scale are compared to observed channel adjustment using the Channel Migration Tool. Detailed examination of channel change is performed at two highly sensitive sites for the period from 1944-2018, using historic aerial photography, channel cross sectional surveys, Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry and Geomorphic Change Detection. Only a small proportion (3% of river length) of the Waipā catchment has significant capacity to adjust and is considered potentially highly sensitive to geomorphic adjustment. This reflects a significant imprint of bedrock, terrace and anthropogenic margin-control. High rates of adjustments are localized, restricted to partly confined planform-controlled or laterally unconfined alluvial reaches that are in high energy settings. In contrast to many other catchments in New Zealand, the Waipā catchment is considered to be a resilient system, with only localised reaches that are sensitive to change. Geomorphic adjustments at these sensitive sites reflect landscape history, climate and changes in riparian vegetation, as well as anthropogenic impacts of gravel extraction and channel stabilisation activities. This cross-scalar analysis of sensitivity identifies reaches that are more vulnerable to change. This provides valuable insights to support cost-effective proactive management and rehabilitation. Prospectively, such insights inform targeted applications of freedom space initiatives, supporting diverse habitat creation and ecological rehabilitation.
