Book Handbook of Biomaterial Properties

Download or read book Handbook of Biomaterial Properties written by Jonathan Black and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-02-28 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in the development of surgical implant materials has been hindered by the lack of basic information on the nature of the tissues, organs and systems being repaired or replaced. Materials' properties of living systems, whose study has been conducted largely under the rubric of tissue mechanics, has tended to be more descriptive than quantitative. In the early days of the modern surgical implant era, this deficiency was not critical. However, as implants continue to improve and both longer service life and higher reliability are sought, the inability to predict the behavior of implanted manufactured materials has revealed the relative lack of knowledge of the materials properties of the supporting or host system, either in health or disease. Such a situation is unacceptable in more conventional engineering practice: the success of new designs for aeronautical and marine applications depends exquisitely upon a detailed, disciplined and quantitative knowledge of service environments, including the properties of materials which will be encountered and interacted with. Thus the knowledge of the myriad physical properties of ocean ice makes possible the design and development of icebreakers without the need for trial and error. In contrast, the development period for a new surgical implant, incorporating new materials, may well exceed a decade and even then only short term performance predictions can be made.

Book Encyclopedia of Tribology

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Tribology written by C. Kajdas and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1990-10-09 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multidisciplinary nature of tribology, the conflicting theories and approaches to it found in the literature, plus the fact that definitions of the same phenomenon often differ widely, prompted the authors to compile this work. The aim of this encyclopedia is to provide information on specific tribological terms. The entire field of tribology encompassing lubrication, friction and wear, i.e. the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion, is covered. An extensive description of the chemical and biological aspects of tribology is given, including a wide range of current references and authors. The reader is also referred to relevant literature for most of the terms listed. The information presented has been made as up-to-date as possible, taking into account both the theoretical and practical nature of the subject. The encyclopedia will be an indispensable reference source in the work of engineers, chemists, physicists, metallurgists, materials and surface scientists, biotechnologists, as well as research workers in these fields.

Book The Friction and Lubrication of Solids

Download or read book The Friction and Lubrication of Solids written by Frank Philip Bowden and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic work, originally published in 1950, was a landmark in the development of the subject of tribology. When it was first published, one reviewer wrote that it 'marks the beginning of a new epoch in the study of friction and lubrication .... The most interesting and comprehensive work on a single branch of physics I have ever read.' For the 1986 reprint David Tabor wrote a new preface, reviewing developments in the subject in the 36 years since the book first appeared. He has also added an appreciation of the life and work of F.P. Bowden, who died in 1968.

Book International Conference on Martensitic Transformations ICOMAT 2008

Download or read book International Conference on Martensitic Transformations ICOMAT 2008 written by Gregory Olson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-10-09 with total page 1617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the week of June 29 - July 5, 2008, over 300 scientists and engineers from 30 countries spanning five continents converged at the historic La Fonda Hotel in the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA to participate in the 12th International Conference on Martensitic Transformations (ICOMAT-08) to fathom the peculiar world of certain crystalline materials that undergo structural change when cooled or stressed. Many of these materials can restore their original shape when reheated, thus the name "Shape Memory Alloys". In the spirit of Santa Fe, a central theme of ICOMAT-08 was INTEGRATION across many dimensions.

Book Maxwell s Enduring Legacy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Malcolm Longair
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2016-07-07
  • ISBN : 1316033414
  • Pages : 687 pages

Download or read book Maxwell s Enduring Legacy written by Malcolm Longair and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cavendish Laboratory is arguably the most famous physics laboratory in the world. Founded in 1874, it rapidly gained a leading international reputation through the researches of the Cavendish professors beginning with Maxwell, Rayleigh, J. J. Thomson, Rutherford and Bragg. Its name will always be associated with the discoveries of the electron, the neutron, the structure of the DNA molecule and pulsars, but these are simply the tip of the iceberg of outstanding science. The physics carried out in the laboratory is the central theme of the book and this is explained in reasonably non-technical terms. The research activities are set in their international context. Generously illustrated, with many pictures of the apparatus used and diagrams from the original papers, the story is brought right up to date with descriptions of the science carried out under the leadership of the very different personalities of Mott, Pippard and Edwards.

Book Electrophysical Phenomena in the Tribology of Polymers

Download or read book Electrophysical Phenomena in the Tribology of Polymers written by A I Sviridewok and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-05-11 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous practical problems connected to triboelectric phenomena remain unsolved in both the fabrication and behavior of polymer threads and fabrics in a variety of industrial articles. Using the results of unique experiments carried out in the countries of the former Soviet Union, this volume fills a gap in the science of tribology, presenting fundamental information on the nature of physical and chemical processes governing and accompanying tribodeformation and tribodisintegration of polymers. Details on electrophysical phenomena such as contact electrification and emergence of the electret state in polymer materials are also provided.

Book Tribology of Abrasive Machining Processes

Download or read book Tribology of Abrasive Machining Processes written by Ioan D. Marinescu and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws upon the science of tribology to understand, predict and improve abrasive machining processes. Pulling together information on how abrasives work, the authors, who are renowned experts in abrasive technology, demonstrate how tribology can be applied as a tool to improve abrasive machining processes. Each of the main elements of the abrasive machining system are looked at, and the tribological factors that control the efficiency and quality of the processes are described. Since grinding is by far the most commonly employed abrasive machining process, it is dealt with in particular detail. Solutions are posed to many of the most commonly experienced industrial problems, such as poor accuracy, poor surface quality, rapid wheel wear, vibrations, work-piece burn and high process costs. This practical approach makes this book an essential tool for practicing engineers. Uses the science of tribology to improve understanding and of abrasive machining processes in order to increase performance, productivity and surface quality of final products A comprehensive reference on how abrasives work, covering kinematics, heat transfer, thermal stresses, molecular dynamics, fluids and the tribology of lubricants Authoritative and ground-breaking in its first edition, the 2nd edition includes 30% new and updated material, including new topics such as CMP (Chemical Mechanical Polishing) and precision machining for micro-and nano-scale applications
