Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this thesis is the historical development of an Indian tribe - the Santals - through the documents that exist in Great Britain, The period taken is immediately prior to the great famine in Bengal in 1770, when British interest first expanded into the sphere of tribal affairs. It is more than a history, it is an anthropological study of the developments in social relations of an aggregate of culturally like people. Owing to the expanding British influence after the famine, economic and political relations underwent radical change. Most important was the development of a tribal identity, that finally crystalised with the creation of the Santal Parganas in 1857, as a result of the uprising of 1855. The central theme is the study of the development of tribal identity, and its process of crystalisation. This leads to a concern about the nature of the categories tribe and tribal. Other related concerns are with local politics, both tribal and colonial, the interaction of economic spheres, their barriers and conflicts. The process of mediation in political relations plays an important role, along with how this was manipulated and perceived. The Santal uprising is analysed in detail as a revitalisation movement and its concommitants of relative and absolute deprivation. The aim of this approach is to organise the material sytemically. Political, economic and cultural relations are structured into a pattern and the developments in this are analysed. Thereby the relations between a tribal people and early British colonialism is understood. The other side to this study is to look at social change as an ongoing process of historical development. This also provides an historical perspective on the numerous studies of the Santals made in the early twentieth century. As such it is an exercise in the methodological relations between the disciplines of anthropology and history.

Book The Santal Rebellion 1855 1856

Download or read book The Santal Rebellion 1855 1856 written by Peter B. Andersen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a new interpretation of the Santal Rebellion, the Hul 1855–1856, drawing on the colonial sources as well as Santal memories. It offers a critique of postcolonial approaches that overlook specifically tribal perspectives and see the Hul as a class-based peasant rebellion. The author analyses the Hul and its participants—the Santals and their opponents, both the colonial administration and the Bengalis. He also looks at the attempts of the Hul’s leaders, Sido and Kạnhu to reform the Santal religion. Offering a new, respectful reading of the Hul’s religious legitimation, the book argues that changes in Santal religion and ethics were responses to the colonial regime’s new and aggressive economic order. The Hul’s leaders, Sido and Kạnhu, demanded the introduction of just laws based on the universal principle of equality. This historical approach leads to a call for the inclusion of the voice of tribal and Adivasi minorities when formulating politics for their development in the 21st century. The book is relevant for researchers and students of social history, social reform, tribal and indigenous studies, postcolonial studies and South Asian studies.

Book An Encounter of Peripheries

Download or read book An Encounter of Peripheries written by Marine Carrin and published by Manohar Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book partakes of the post-colonial reassessment of the nineteenth century, where agency is seen to lie, not just with the colonising centre, but also with the colonised periphery. Here, missionaries from a peripheral part of Europe -- including a Norway striving to decolonise itself -- try to convert the Santals, an Indian tribe which had rebelled against the intruding colonial order. Provincialising the European origins of the missionaries, the authors try to explore the Santal response. Missionary sources have been used to recast such encounters, but the response seldom has had a documented voice. The Santals, however, wrote thousands of pages as part of the missionary project to document their culture, showing their efforts to reconstruct and re-appropriate their own culture. Subaltern voices emerge, as working-class missionaries and Santals meet, bypassing the centres of hegemony, and oppose the disenchantment of colonial experience to the memory of a glorious past. "For some years, a space is created at the edge of empire, where the missionary adventurer, and Santals in search of a new identity, together build a new Christian community. The missionaries succeed only because of the Santal engagement -- born, not just from their appropriation of missionary ideas, but also from their resistance to the Hindu majority and to colonialism. But soon colonial power relations erode missionary independence, as they come to depend on the churches of their homeland, while the Santals are absorbed into the exploitative economics of colonialism. The space allowed by an encounter of peripheries' is closed.
