Oscar Slater was a German bookmaker who lived in London and was wrongfully accused of murder. The following year Scottish lawyer and amateur criminologist William Roughead published his research titled "Trial of Oscar Slater," highlighting flaws in the prosecution. After the pressure from the public and some Conservative politicians, including Ramsay MacDonald and Arthur Conan Doyle, a new secret inquiry started, after which Slater was released in 1928 with £6,000 compensation, although the real murderers, protected by political connections, were never punished.

Book Oscar Slater A Killer Exposed

Download or read book Oscar Slater A Killer Exposed written by Brenda Rossini and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2024-03-27 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Oscar Slater, a Jewish immigrant in Glasgow, Scotland and two fellow Scottish scammers, Helen Lambie and Patrick Nugent. In the Christmas season of 1908, the trio conspired to rob an elderly, wealthy lady of her diamonds, and, in the course of which burglary, Oscar Slater murdered her on December 21, 1908. All, not some, authors and sleuths who researched the 1909 conviction emphatically supported Oscar Slater's innocence, that he was misidentified and wrongfully convicted. In an effort to place guilt for Marion Gilchrist's murder squarely on Oscar Slater, the conclusions here reach further back in the crime's timeline to January 1908, about a year before the murder-the month that Patrick Nugent and Helen Lambie attended a New Year's party. The Glasgow police investigation tarried at only 30 days leading up to the murder. FROM THE INTRODUCTION "When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." Sherlock Holmes, Sign of Four. "If you're looking for Trouble, you've come to the right place." Trouble, by Elvis Presley. "I am Woman, hear me roar." I am Woman, by Helen Reddy.

Book Trial of Oscar Slater Classic Reprint

Download or read book Trial of Oscar Slater Classic Reprint written by William Roughead and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trial of Oscar Slater This report of the trial of Oscar Slater has been prepared from the official shorthand writers' notes taken in Court, the evidence of all the principal witnesses being printed verbatim. The Editor confesses to a certain diffidence in dealing with a case so recent in which the actors, with the regrettable exception of Mr. Ewing Speirs, the agent for the defence, are still in life. But notwithstanding the obvious restrictions imposed by these conditions, the endeavour has been made to give in the Introduction an accurate and fair account of this very remarkable case. The facts as disclosed upon the proof have been narrated in the order in which they occurred, from the evidence of the various witnesses at the trial, thus affording a consecutive view of the course of events, which it is hoped will enable the reader more easily to appreciate the purport of the evidence led. The Editor would here acknowledge the facilities which have been afforded to him by the learned Judge who presided at the trial, as well as by the counsel on both sides of the bar, and by the medical witnesses for the prosecution and defence. The Honourable Lord Guthrie has favoured the Editor by revising his charge to the jury; the Right Honourable Alexander Ure, Lord Advocate, and Mr. A. L. M'Clure, K.C., Sheriff of Argyll, have also done him the favour of revising their addresses. Professor Glaister, M.D., has kindly read the proof sheets of the medical evidence adduced by the Crown; Dr. Aitchison Robertson and Dr. Alexander Veitch those of their evidence for the defence. Book British Literature in Transition 1900 1920 A New Age

Download or read book British Literature in Transition 1900 1920 A New Age written by James Purdon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first two decades of the twentieth century, Britain's imperial power and influence was at its height. These were years of daring, when adventurers sounded the mysteries of the deep sea and the distant poles, aviators sped through the skies, and new media technologies transformed communication. They were years of social upheaval, during which long-suppressed voices – particularly those of women, of the labouring classes, and of colonial subjects – grew louder and demanded to be heard. They were years of violence, of insurrection and political agitation, and of imperial conflicts that would encompass continents. By subjecting specific developments in literature and related culture to a fine-grained and historically-informed analysis, British Literature in Transition, 1900–1920: A New Age? explores the writing of this extraordinary period in all its complexity and vibrancy.
