Book Trial at the Faire

Download or read book Trial at the Faire written by Laurel Wanrow and published by Sprouting Star Press. This book was released on 2021-06-12 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A medieval festival. An outing with friends. With costumes and their magic locked away, no one will suspect they’re wizards, right? Fifteen-year-old Raven wants nothing more than to spend the day talking to his smart and fun neighbor, Willow, but his gran has other plans for their outing to a human medieval faire. It’s a test for the young wizards from their hidden island, a trial in passing as human, and everyone must take it seriously. The teens have received strict instructions, from dressing up in old-style costumes to locking away their magic and not even breathing words like spells and magic. Fine, Raven will go along. Except…Salm—older and charming—is paying too much attention to Willow. With no help coming from Beri, his adopted brother who is grumpier than an old badger, scornful glares from Oyster and many interruptions by Coral, Salm’s annoying younger sister, Raven’s only hope to catch Willow’s eye might be the faire’s squire competition. Deep in his own plans, Raven overlooks his friends are suffering their own growing pains, especially Beri when the trial forces him to confront the uneasy memories of his mother’s death. When one slip threatens their wizard background, can the teens work together to rescue their friends and family? Download TRIAL AT THE FAIRE novella for fun & action challenging the island’s wizard teens two summers before the events of The Witch of the Meadows. Seize adventure in a clean & wholesome cozy fantasy appropriate for adults and young adults. Some mild cursing. This prequel novella contains read-between-the-lines spoilers for Book 1.

Book The Right to a Fair Trial

Download or read book The Right to a Fair Trial written by Thom Brooks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The right to a fair trial is often held as a central constitutional protection. It nevertheless remains unclear what precisely should count as a 'fair' trial and who should decide verdicts. This already difficult issue has become even more important given a number of proposed reforms of the trial, especially for defendants charged with terrorism offences. This collection, The Right to a Fair Trial, is the first to publish in one place the most influential work in the field on the following topics: including the right to jury trial; lay participation in trials; jury nullification; trial reform; the civil jury trial; and the more recent issue of terrorism trials. The collection should help inform both scholars and students of both the importance and complexity of the right to a fair trial, as well as shed light on how the trial might be further improved.

Download or read book Fair Trials written by Sarah J Summers and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-08-10 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The right to a fair trial has become an issue of increasing public concern, following a series of high profile cases such as the Bulger case, Khan (Sultan) and R v DPP ex p Kebilene. In determining the scope of the right, we now increasingly look to the ECHR, but the court has given little guidance, focusing on reconciling procedural rules rather than addressing the broader issues. This book addresses the issue of the meaning of the right by examining the contemporary jurisprudence in the light of a body of historical literature which discusses criminal procedure in a European context. It argues that there is in fact a European criminal procedural tradition which has been neglected in contemporary discussions, and that an understanding of this tradition might illuminate the discussion of fair trial in the contemporary jurisprudence. This challenging new work elucidates the meaning of the fair trial and in doing so challenges the conventional approach to the analysis of criminal procedure as based on the distinction between adversarial and inquisitorial procedural systems. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is dominated by an examination of the fair trial principles in the works of several notable European jurists of the nineteenth century, arguing that their writings were instrumental in the development of the principles underlying the modern conception of criminal proceedings. The second part looks at the fair trials jurisprudence of the ECHR and it is suggested that although the Court has neglected the European tradition, the jurisprudence has nevertheless been influenced, albeit unconsciously, by the institutional principles developed in the nineteenth century.

Book Free Press Vs Fair Trials

Download or read book Free Press Vs Fair Trials written by Jon Bruschke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-12-08 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current research on media and the law has generally been atheoretical and contradictory. This volume explains why pretrial publicity is unlikely to affect the outcome of most jury trials, despite many experimental studies claiming to show the influence of publicity. It reviews existing literature on the topic and includes results from the authors' own research in an effort to answer four questions: *Does pretrial publicity bias the outcome of trials? *If it has an effect, under what conditions does this effect emerge? *What remedies should courts apply in situations where pretrial publicity may have an effect? *How does pretrial publicity relate to broader questions of justice? Reporting research based on actual trial outcomes rather than on artificial laboratory studies, Free Press vs. Fair Trials examines publicity in the context of the whole judicial system and media system. After a thorough review of research into pretrial publicity, the authors argue that the criminal justice system's remedies are likely to be effective in most cases and that there are much larger obstacles confronting defendants than publicity. This book presents the first extensive study of the influence of pretrial publicity on actual criminal trials, with results that challenge years of experimental research and call for more sophisticated study of the intersection of media and criminal justice. It is required reading for scholars in media law, media effects, legal communication, criminal justice, and related areas.

Download or read book Interfaces on Trial 2 0 written by Jonathan Band and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011-03-04 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate over the use of copyright law to prevent competition and interoperability in the global software industry. We live in an interoperable world. Computer hardware and software products from different manufacturers can exchange data within local networks and around the world using the Internet. The competition enabled by this compatibility between devices has led to fast-paced innovation and prices low enough to allow ordinary users to command extraordinary computing capacity. In Interfaces on Trial 2.0, Jonathan Band and Masanobu Katoh investigate an often overlooked factor in the development of today's interoperabilty: the evolution of copyright law. Because software is copyrightable, copyright law determines the rules for competition in the information technology industry. This book—a follow-up to Band and Katoh's successful 1995 book Interfaces on Trial—examines the debates surrounding the use of copyright law to prevent competition and interoperability in the global software industry in the last fifteen years. Band and Katoh are longtime advocates for interoperable devices but present a reasoned view of contentious issues related to interoperability issues in the United States, the European Union, and the Pacific Rim. They discuss such topics as the protectability of interface specifications, the permissibility of reverse engineering (and legislative and executive endorsement of pro-interoperability case law), the interoperability exception to the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the interoperability cases decided under it, the enforceability of contractural restrictions on reverse engineering; and recent legal developments affecting the future of interoperability, including those related to open source-software and software patents.
