Book New Topics in Theoretical Physics

Download or read book New Topics in Theoretical Physics written by Henk F. Arnoldus and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the various branches of physics differ in their experimental methods and theoretical approaches, certain general principles apply to all of them. The forefront of contemporary advances in physics lies in the submicroscopic regime, whether it be in atomic, nuclear, condensed-matter, plasma, or particle physics, or in quantum optics, or even in the study of stellar structure. All are based upon quantum theory (i.e: quantum mechanics and quantum field theory) and relativity, which together form the theoretical foundations of modern physics. Many physical quantities whose classical counterparts vary continuously over a range of possible values are in quantum theory constrained to have discontinuous, or discrete, values. The intrinsically deterministic character of classical physics is replaced in quantum theory by intrinsic uncertainty. According to quantum theory, electromagnetic radiation does not always consist of continuous waves; instead it must be viewed under some circumstances as a collection of particle-like photons, the energy and momentum of each being directly proportional to its frequency (or inversely proportional to its wavelength, the photons still possessing some wavelike characteristics). This book presents state-of-the-art research from around the world.

Book excerpt: This is a kaleidoscopic account of the remarkable life story of Alladi Ramakrishnan (1923-2008), an internationally reputed physicist, and the son of Sir Alladi Krishnaswami Iyer (1883-1953), one of India's most eminent jurists.Part I of the autobiography gives a fascinating account his early life in Madras, India during the last decades of British colonial rule, and the leading role played by Sir Alladi in drafting the Constitution of India. Then follows the incredible saga of his creation of MATSCIENCE, The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, in Madras, inspired by his visit to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and the result of a Theoretical Physics Seminar which he organized in his family home Ekamra Nivas in Madras, which received the endorsement of Nobel Laureate Niels Bohr, and the support of India's Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.Part II covers the period of Ramakrishnan's term as Director of MATSCIENCE, and his visits to about 200 centres of learning the world over, where he interacted with leading scientists and lectured on his research in the fields of Probability, Stochastic Processes, Elementary Particle Physics, Matrix Theory, and on his novel treatment of Einstein's Special Relativity. Historical photos, letters, and documents of special interest are included.

Book The Ultimate Meaningfulness of the Universe Knowing God Volume 2

Download or read book The Ultimate Meaningfulness of the Universe Knowing God Volume 2 written by Anthony E. Mansueto and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-09-05 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the universe ultimately meaningful, ordered to an end of transcendental value? Or is it merely the product of random interactions in which organization emerges only locally and by chance and is conserved only so long as rare and improbable conditions prevail? There can, in fact, be no more important question, for on the resolution of this question depends the significance of all our worldly labors. The Ultimate Meaningfulness of the Universe represents a new departure in this debate, arguing that because it describes rather than explains the universe, mathematical physics is radically incapable of addressing this question. The book argues for a new scientific research paradigm that while incorporating and building on the description of the universe supplied by modern mathematical physics, goes beyond it in a restored discipline of teleological explanation. The book sketches applications in the physical, biological, and social domains, and shows that powerful evidence already points toward the ultimate meaningfulness of the universe.

Book Self Focusing of Relativistic Electron Bunches in Plasma

Download or read book Self Focusing of Relativistic Electron Bunches in Plasma written by Valery B. Krasovitskii and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the non-linear theory of electrostatic focusing of an electron beam split into bunches under conditions when the plasma permittivity at the modulation frequency is negative and the effective Coulomb force acting on the electron bunches is reversed. Conditions for the spatial equilibrium between the bunch and plasma emission, as well as the dynamics of the formation of focussed bunches, are confirmed by solving (both analytically and numerically) the self-consistent set of equations.

Book Matscience Symposia on Theoretical Physics

Download or read book Matscience Symposia on Theoretical Physics written by Alladi Ramakrishnan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MATSCIENCE Institute holds two scientific meetings a year, an anniversary symposium in January to commemorate its birth in 1962 and a three-week summer school in August. The proceedings of the first three meetings were initially made available for private circulation as cyclostyled notes. Professor Rosenfeld, the editor of Nuclear Physics, expressed the view that such material, which repre sented the cooperative effort of the scientists from various countries who participated in the visiting program of our Institute, should be published in a "more permanent form" to reach a wider community of readers. We were given the opportunity to do this by Mr. Earl Coleman, President of Plenum Press, who made the spontaneous offer, during his visit to Madras just a year ago to publish these proceedings as a continuing series. It was also decided to include in each volume certain lectures delivered during the year, though not at the meeting itself, if they were relevant to the subject matter of the symposium. The handsome effort of Plenum Press to bring out the series begin ning with the very first symposium has been matched by the willing cooperation of our visiting scientists, who have made this an inter national endeavor, the wholesome consequences of which will be felt beyond the domain of science.
