Book excerpt: Concerns about the nation's infrastructure and its ability to support commerce and promote public well-being have prompted calls for greater infrastructure spending. In response to a request from the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Finance, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) prepared this study, which analyzes recent developments in spending on transportation and water infrastructure, trends in spending for capital and for operations and maintenance by the various levels of government, and the rationale for public spending on infrastructure. This study updates a 2007 report, Trends in public spending on transportation and water infrastructure, 1956 to 2004--Preface.

Download or read book China s Regional Development written by Ming Lu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is a large developing economy and it has been deeply involved in globalization since its economic reform and opening-up. Simultaneously, China has seen a significant change in the spatial distribution of economic resources, especially capital and labor. In the recent 10 years, economists have made significant progress in both theoretical and empirical studies on related topics. The book provides an overview on the existing literature and current policy debates on what we have known and what we have misunderstood. This book includes an analytical framework of the New Economic Geography (NEG) with political economy to help us understand China’s regional development issues. The book of 10 chapters is organized into four thematic sections. The first section is a theoretical discussion on the relationship between economic agglomeration and interregional balanced development. The second section is a political economy analysis on regional and urban-rural development. The third section provides a summary on empirical literatures concerning from market segmentation and institutional barriers to production factor mobility. The final section consists of four empirical chapters on the relationship between agglomeration and balance, which is the core of relevant policy debates. The book argues that for China to achieve both efficiency and balance for regional development, China may need to reform its systems which constrain production factors mobility. This book is a valuable reference for readers who are interested in spatial economics and the Chinese economy, especially its regional and urban development.

Download or read book Infrastructure Planning and Finance written by Vicki Elmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 1178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrastructure Planning and Finance is a non-technical guide to the engineering, planning, and financing of major infrastucture projects in the United States, providing both step-by-step guidance, and a broad overview of the technical, political, and economic challenges of creating lasting infrastructure in the 21st Century. Infrastructure Planning and Finance is designed for the local practitioner or student who wants to learn the basics of how to develop an infrastructure plan, a program, or an individual infrastructure project. A team of authors with experience in public works, planning, and city government explain the history and economic environment of infrastructure and capital planning, addressing common tools like the comprehensive plan, sustainability plans, and local regulations. The book guides readers through the preparation and development of comprehensive plans and infrastructure projects, and through major funding mechanisms, from bonds, user fees, and impact fees to privatization and competition. The rest of the book describes the individual infrastructure systems: their elements, current issues and a 'how-to-do-it' section that covers the system and the comprehensive plan, development regulations and how it can be financed. Innovations such as decentralization, green and blue-green technologies are described as well as local policy actions to achieve a more sustainable city are also addressed. Chapters include water, wastewater, solid waste, streets, transportation, airports, ports, community facilities, parks, schools, energy and telecommunications. Attention is given to how local policies can ensure a sustainable and climate friendly infrastructure system, and how planning for them can be integrated across disciplines.

Book excerpt: Has anyone actually seen a bridge being built in America? This editor has travelled for almost 40 years in America without seeing a single one being constructed -- and few even being repaired. Some critics point out that America has built excellent bridges in Vietnam and Iraq which indicates that the knowledge base remains intact. Others say that individual states cannot feed their armies of bureaucrats and fund their plush pensions and health care programs and still expect to build bridges. And the federal government cannot be counted on for much of anything useful. This book presents recent reports focusing on this part of America's crumbling infrastructure.
Download or read book 99 Jumpstarts to Research written by Peggy Whitley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-08-16 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides research assistance for 99 current and provocative issues students can use to write a brief argumentative paper. In 2030, it is projected that 65 percent of the population will be over 65. The U.S. Government Census Bureau reveals that over an adult's working life, college graduates typically earn close to $1 million more than high school graduates. About 43 percent of American families spend more than they earn each year. These three factoids represent a tiny fraction of the potential research subjects contained in 99 Jumpstarts to Research: Topic Guides for Finding Information on Current Issues, Second Edition, a completely revised follow-up to the original edition. Every jumpstart—each focused upon a current, timely issue—contains ideas for narrowing the topic, research keywords, suggested best books and databases, and Internet sites. This book supports both faculty and students in identifying compelling topics, effectively evaluating and selecting resources in today's information-overload world, and deriving enjoyment from the research and writing process.

The contributors highlight how European mega-city regions are evolving and strategic intervention redefined to enable the integration of urban qualities in a multi-level governance environment, how traditional federal countries in North America and Australia see the promise of major policies and development initiatives finally moving ahead to herald a more strategic intervention at national and regional scales, and how transitional economies in China witness the rise of state strategies to control the articulation of scales and to reassert the functional importance of state in a growing diffused power context.

Download or read book China s Pan Pearl River Delta written by Anthony G. O. Yeh and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities and regions in Asia are facing problems that cannot be adequately managed by traditional urban planning. Competition and local protectionism have often hindered infrastructural development and regional integration. In southern China, an area embracing one-fifth of China and one-third of its population, the economies and societies of nine provinces, together with Hong Kong and Macao, face many barriers to regional collaboration. Fiscal regulatory conflicts, land and housing reform, and bottlenecks in immigration and transport have stymied efforts to develop infrastructure that could spur economic growth and greater prosperity for the entire region. This book examines regional integration and its barriers in southern China in a comparative framework using perspectives on development and globalization from Europe and North America. With its contributions from leading researchers and practitioners in the field, the book will appeal to students, academics and policymakers interested in urban and regional planning, geography, sociology, public administration and development studies. Anthony G.O. Yehis chair professor and head of the Department of Urban Planning and Design, and director of the Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Planning, the University of Hong Kong.Jiang Xuis assistant professor in the Department of Geography and Resource Management, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. "A timely and much-needed volume on a region of growing importance. Supported by helpful maps and charts, this collection discusses the theory, challenges, and practice of development in an area comprising nearly a third of China's population. The comparative framework, drawing on experiences from Europe and the United States, is particularly valuable." -- Linda McCarthy, co-author ofUrbanization: An Introduction to Urban Geography
