Download or read book Additions to a Revision of the Shark Genus Carcharhinus written by J. A. F. Garrick and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Features of the valid nominal species of Aprionodon Gill (isodon Valenciennes) and Hypoprion Müller and Henle (hemiodon Valenciennes, macloti Müller and Henle, and signatus Poey), plus those of a previously unrecognized species here described as Carcharhinus leiodon n.sp., are examined and compared with those of Carcharhinus Blainville. Features studied include morphometrics, vertebral numbers and other vertebral characteristics, tooth numbers, color pattern, and some other aspects of external morphology. It is concluded that on these features C. Leiodon n.sp. is entirely encompassed within the parameters of Carcharhinus, and that, although A. isodon, H. hemiodon, H. macloti, and H. signatus each extend the range of diversity of Carcharhinus in one or more features, A. isodon is not uniquely different from Carcharhinus, and there is no common pattern of difference between the three species of Hypoprion and Carcharhinus. Accordingly, and because the nature of the teeth of Aprionodon and Hypoprion has been found insufficient to warrant generic distinction from Carcharhinus, the genera Aprionodon and Hypoprion are synonymised with Carcharhinus. A diagnosis and description are given for each of the above species. The descriptions include measurements, counts, and line illustrations that show the whole shark in lateral view, underside of head, nostril, and teeth. The geographic distribution is summarized, as are also the meager biological data available on number of embryos, size at birth, size at sexual maturity, and maximum size.

Download or read book Cephalopods written by Peter Boyle and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Squid, cuttlefish and octopuses, which form the marine mollusc group the cephalopods, are of great and increasing interest to marine biologists, physiologists, ecologists, environmental biologists and fisheries scientists. Cephalopods: ecology and fisheries is a thorough review of this most important animal group. The first introductory section of the book provides coverage of cephalopod form and function, origin and evolution, Nautilus, and biodiversity and zoogeography. The following section covers life cycles, growth, physiological ecology, reproductive strategies and early life histories. There follows a section on ecology, which provides details of slope and shelf species, oceanic and deep sea species, population ecology, trophic ecology and cephalopods as prey. The final section of the book deals with fisheries and ecological interactions, with chapters on fishing methods and scientific sampling, fisheries resources, fisheries oceanography and assessment and management methods. This scientifically comprehensive and beautifully illustrated book is essential reading for marine biologists, zoologists, ecologists and fisheries managers. All libraries in universities and research establishments where biological sciences and fisheries are studied and taught should have multiple copies of this landmark publication on their shelves.
Download or read book Atlas of the Biology and Distribution of the Squids Illex Illecebrosus and Loligo Pealei in the Northwest Atlantic written by G. A. P. Black and published by Department of fisheries and oceans. This book was released on 1987 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biology, distribution, and fisheries of the short-finned squid and the long-finned squid in the Northwest Atlantic are summarized for the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization Convention area. The primary synopses are presented graphically (using maps and charts) as a visual representation of distributional patterns, and fisheries statistics. In consequence of its importance within the Canadian Fisheries Convention Zone, greatest emphasis has been given to description of the short-finned squid and its fishery.
