Book excerpt: Since its economic reform and market opening in 1978, China has been of concern to many entrepreneurs and policymakers as one of the most competitive manufacturing locations over the last 30 years. During this period, China has attracted investment of foreign capital in their industry by offering a highly amicable investment climate, thereby securing a chance to restructure their economic system. As a result, China has experienced unprecedented rapid economic growth, which has turned the Chinese into attractive consumers with latent purchasing power, not just workers with a high quality work force. In this study, we analyze the Chinese food market, the most remarkable consumer market experiencing structural change, and seek out business opportunities and challenges for the Korean food processing industry where they try to find the next growth engine going beyond the stagnation in industries' growth. For this purpose, we first review the supply and demand sector of the Chinese food market by examining the statistics for the food processing industry sector and household food consumption. Next, we measure the change in food consumption patterns, particularly focusing on changes in the food demand behavior of urban households.Based on the results analyzed above, we lastly evaluate the current performance and potential of the Korean food processing industry in the Chinese food market, and then find a way to sustain long term success in this market.

What has affected the foodways of Chinese communities in other Asian countries with large Chinese diasporic communities? What has made Chinese food popular in Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan? What has brought about the adoption and adaptation of western food and changes in Chinese diets in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Peking? By considering the practice of globalization, this volume of essays by well-known anthropologists from many locales in Asia, describes changes, variations and innovations to Chinese food in many parts of the world, paying particular attention to questions related to how foods are introduced, maintained, localised and reinvented according to changing lifestyles and social tastes. The book reviews and broadens classic social science theories about ethnic and social identity formation through the examination of Chinese food and eating habits in many locations. Book Lebensmittelhandel und Konsumtrends in China Food Trade and Consumption Trends in China

Download or read book Lebensmittelhandel und Konsumtrends in China Food Trade and Consumption Trends in China written by Mingzhi Sheng and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Abstract: As one of the biggest food markets in the world, China has been the target of many food-and agri-business companies. The objective of this study is to provide practical information for the potential investor and exporter by describing the structures and trends in the retail food trade of China. This study characterizes the present food trade of China, and elaborates on the most important structures and trends. These are illustrated with the help of a case study about the retail food trade. Owing to regional differences, firms in the small city Jinghua, the medium sized city Hangzhou and in Beijing are examined and compared. Being closely connected with the economic reforms, the economic growth and the rising incomes of consumers has resulted in continuous increases in the volume of retail food sales in China. However, regional, urban and rural differentiation can be observed. Although the traditional retail outlets are still the most important type of store, both the weekly market and the food wholesale market function as main shopping places, particularly for fresh products and lower price items. On the other hand, in cities, modern supermarkets are gaining in popularity, primarily due to the flexibility offered by self-service and the wide assortment of merchandise. The concentration process in the retail food trade is beginning, although the degree of concentration is still very low. Due to the increasing competition, large sized enterprise groups are springing up by acquisition, co-operation and merger. Regionally, chain stores have expanded explosively. As a strong source of competition to domestic enterprises, internationally operating enterprises have been involved in Chinese retail food trade with several supermarkets in large cities. The once planned and supply driven Chinese food market has now become largely consumer driven. Together with the continuously increasing household income, this has led to a great variety of supplied food products. Chinese consumers have altered their food consumption behaviour, most notably by increasing their share of animal and higher value products. Especially in cities, the trend is going towards processed, prepared or pre-cooked food, health food, wine and beer, as well as non-alcoholic beverages such as mineral water and juices. In the last five years, the exports of animal products, beverages, sweets, canned vegetables, and canned fruits from Germany to China have increased with high growth rates.

Book Chinese consumers s behaviours The Chinese market retail strategies and consumer groups

Download or read book Chinese consumers s behaviours The Chinese market retail strategies and consumer groups written by Lisa Bouam and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, , language: English, abstract: China ́s reform and open up policy initiated in 1978 has contributed to expanding its economy. From 1989 until 2013, China GDP Annual Growth Rate averaged 9.2%. While Europe and the US are facing a decrease of their inhabitant’s ́purchasing power, China ́s growth has led to the apparition of a significant middle class which is getting richer and buys more than its elders. China represents a huge potential for multinationals companies that have been trying to break into this market. Thus, understanding Chinese consumer ́s behaviours has become essential to the establishment of a successful marketing strategy. However, China as a country is also very diverse. A simple look at the administrative organization of the mainland part divided into five levels (municipalities, provincial capitals, prefectures, counties and county cities) reveals a significant segmentation which is even broader as soon as you leave the cost to go through the lands. What retail markets and channels should companies choose in order to target those markets? Besides, as China had to face significant economic and political changes over the past few years, Chinese consumers ́ shopping habits have been evolving dramatically. As a result, categorizing Chinese consumers can be very challenging since several factors such as age, localisation (rural/town) or revenue influence greatly Chinese’s consumers habits. In this essay, we will choose to distinguish Chinese consumers revenue wise: affluent, mainstream/aspirants, value, poor according to the categories that have been mentioned in McKinsey Study “Meet the Chinese consumer of 2020”. What will China consumers buy next? First, we will analyze the global trends of an evolving Chinese market. Secondly, we will explain why companies‘retail strategies should adapt to regional differences within the country (City/Rural towns, Cost/Inside, Different provinces).Thirdly, we will try to understand better Chinese consumer’s mindset by categorizing relevant consumers groups. Also, we will focus on Chinese consumer ́s specificities compared to their westernized counterparts in terms of brand loyalty and perception.

Book The Third Revolution in the Chinese Countryside

Download or read book The Third Revolution in the Chinese Countryside written by Ross Garnaut and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-04-18 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first revolution in the Chinese countryside was the land reform implemented in the 'liberated areas' and extended throughout China after the proclamation of the People's Republic of China in 1949. This was important in the consolidation of the Communist Party's political power. The second revolution was the decollectivization of agriculture and the shift to the household responsibility system as a basis for agricultural production. The phenomenal increase in Chinese agricultural output from 1978 to 1984 resulted partly from the new system of production and with a resulting explosion of farm incomes. The second revolution in the Chinese countryside from the late 1970s set the scene for the third revolution: the freeing of markets for farm products and the linking of domestic markets and international markets. The third revolution is still in progress and this book explores its beginnings. Initially, the book covers the issues of poverty in China and feeding the population. The second section describes the agricultural markets in China and the price reform of agricultural products. The next two parts discuss international and regional issues of China's agricultural economy. Finally there are contributions on what institutional changes have been associated with the third agricultural revolution. The contributions are from a team of experts on the Chinese economy from inside and outside China led by Professor Garnaut.
